In the year 1003. the Christian Brothers at a General Chapter vowed to form an association to obtain the grace of God. particularly for those children who attend schools lacking the teaching of Christian Doctrine. This grace was to he ob- tained by prayer to tlle Divine Child. In carrying out tl1is vow. Brother Elias. the Provincial of the Christian Brothers. erected a chapel at Bethlehem and organized an association known as the Con- fraternity of Bethelem. XN'llt'Il the number of members in this associa- tion exceeded 50.000 in 1909. the same Brother Provincial submitted a plea to the Holy Father to have the association raised to the rank of an Archconfraternity so that all such organizations could he incorporated as one and the special indul- gences shared by all. Receiving the permission of the Pontifli. plans were made for the elevation of the association into a central Archconfraternity. The specific ends for the Archconfraternity are these: I. that God may rank first in all educational instructionsg 2. that hoth teachers and pupils he allowed to follow the laws of the church without interferenceg 3. that the child be not exposed to lose his faith where God is unknown. Cadets attend Holy Mass at school retreat
