BROTHER ALOYSIUS Brother Aloysius of Mary was born Francis Xavier Ryan, on june 17, 1902. He attended the Christian Brothers, school of St. Thomas the Apostle, where God bestowed upon him his price- less vocation. Following the call, he entered the Novitiate at Pocantico Hills, N. Y., where he com- menced his studies to become a Christian Brother. During the early years of his apostolate, he taught at such places as St. Maryls. Providence, Rhode Islandg St. Cecelia's, Brooklyn, and De la Salle Institute in New York City. And then he was transferred to Albany. Here, he spent a long and singularly fruitful period of activity. Intensely interested in young men, he became the spirit and drive of his community. He approached the task of molding the Christian character of young men with the utmost reverence, humility and love. To him. the young man was the most precious thing in the world, for he was created to the image and likeness of God to share His divinity in heaven. In l9-ll Brother Aloysius succeeded Brother Brendan as director at C.B.A. Upon his shoulders was placed the responsibility of caring for the spiritual and mental needs of several hundred boys. And joyfully, he accepted this responsibility. Within five years, he had almost doubled the scholastic enrollment from 450 to 700 cadets. He had built the magnificent gymnasium and had amassed part of the money for the construction of a new faculty house. Indeed, Brother Aloysius had many accomplish- ments, but still, he will be most remembered for the intense love he had for his boys. In return, he too was loved, not only by the student body, but by all with whom he came in contact. At his death, it was remarked by the venerable Brother Paulian. 'LIn my more than Hfty years with the Brothers, I have never met a more justly lovable characterf, 441759 REV. BROTHER ALoYs1Us, F.S.C Principal 41941-46D Seniors
