We were hosts to four other schools in the Second Annual C.B.A. Relays, in which our well-balanced track squad did the expected by easily winning the meet. Our Held men took first place in every field event and our speedsters on the cinders took first place in the 440 relay and second places in the 880 relay, mile and two mile relays and the medley. Final tally: C.B.A. 39, Vincentian 26, Albany High 17, Bethlehem Central High 15, and Ravena Coey- mans 2. Our thinclads took over the schoolboy sport spotlight during the first week of June on the occa- sion of the annual interscholastic track and field championships. Brother .Iohn's athletes spread- eagled the field at Bleecker Stadium, annexing nine of the eleven events. Dick Mason scored for C.B.A. in the 100 yard dash and the 220, McGill won the 4405 Harrold the mile, Bietka took the shot put and teammate Ciesielski won the discus event with a heave of 134 feet 2 inches. Ed Angell won the vaulting event and Scherer again had twin vic- tories in the high jump and broad jump. Midgley' of Albany Academy set a city record in the 880 when he negotiated the oval in the record breaking time of 2.04 2f5. The record for this event was previously held by Bill Cooney, a star on the '47 C.B.A. squad. The team this year was built around several capable veterans from the championship squad of last season. In uniform and performing again were such standouts as Harrold in the distance events, Ed Angell in the pole vault, and those burly per- formers, Batkiewicz and Zangrando, in the weight events. Capable performances by Brown, Carty, Gavin, Powers, Murtagh, and Glavin, plus support from Jim Pelgrin, Hal Shannon, Hank Apple, and Howie Schafer, stars from last yearls Plebe squad, combined to bring about a successful season. TRACK The 1949 edition of the varsity track team has a big job on its hands if it intends to equal the record of the thinclads of last year. But with Brother George, successful cross-country moderator, at the helm, it is very possible that he and the varsity will again retain the City Track Championship which C.B.A. has held for the past four years. Our lone loss in dual competition last season was to the highly touted Mont Pleasant squad. which won its twenty-first consecutive dual meet in a three year period. Records for both schools were broken as Ed Barber. Pleasant's National scholastic champ, tossed the twelve pound shot 54 feet 5 inches for a new school record. It was so good Rt v. Brother A. C.B.A., set a new school mark in the broad jump with a leap of 22 feet 3 inches. Our wins in the 100. 440. mile. broad and high jumps were not sufficient to offset the points gar- nered by Pleasant in the 220, 880. hurdles, relay. and the remaining field events. Mason was victori- ous for C.B.A. in the 100, while McGill took the 440. and Harrold the mile run. Tommy Scherer, winner of the broad jump. also outclassed the field in the high jump. The hnal tally: Mont Pleasant 61. Christian Brothers .Academy 43. Following the Mont Pleasant meet. C.B.A. ran a dual meet against Albany Academy and really made a field day of it. The Purple and Gold made a clean sweep of the 100. 220, 440, discus. and the high jump. In winning the shot put, Bietka tied the record he had made the week before. and a sag in the cross bar was the only thing preventing the 6 foot 4 inch record set by Tommy Scherer in the high jump from becoming official. Clark, Levitto and Hinkel were 1. 2, 3, for the Brothers in the 100 yard dash, Levitto and Hinkel teamed up with McGill to sweep the 220, the 440 sweep was made by Mason. Roche and Bfurphy. It was in this event that Mason ran the 440 in 53.2, his record for the season. In the discus, Batkiewicz, Zan- grando. and Bietka were triumphant. while Scherer. Mason, and Boice took the high jump. Ed Harvey, Dennis Murnane. Tom Scherer and Ed Angell were victorious in the mile. 220 low hurdles, broad jump. and pole vault respectively. When the final score had been tabulated C.B.A. had 83 1,3 points to 201.8 for the Cadets of Albany Academy.

' BASEBALL Coach Pete Mooney was pleasantly surprised when over a hundred candidates turned out for baseball practice this year. It was quite a few days before he was able to 'iget a line on all his players, but the student body knew that when he did, he would Held a team worthy of representing C.B.A. Last year the team was considered the best in Albany, and there was no reason why history shouldn't repeat itself. The coach had twelve veterans to use as a nucleus for his 1949 baseball team. These veterans certainly gave the starting nine the poise and balance a championship team needs and should have. The pitching staff was composed of four vet- erans, with several new members attempting to break into the lineup. E. O'Connor, last year's mainstay, led the pitching staff and was given support by Ed McGraw', Paul DeRusso and Ray Lyons. The catching was adequately taken care of by .lack Carroll, Frank Restifo and Fritz Boure. Veterans Jack Kane and Bob Wlagner battled for the outheld berths. Frank Restifo, a newcomer at C.B.A., proved as skillful in baseball as he was in basketball and was a worthy addition to the team. Coach Mooney led his charges to ten victories in fourteen starts last year, and they were consid- ered the mythical champions of Albany. Ed O'Connor, possessing a snapping curve and a blinding fast ball, led the team with eight victories. McCaffrey alternated between playing first base and pitching.
