VARSI YFI I HES 21-8 The 1980-81 Varsity Jets finished their season on a sour note, but their accomplishments will far overshadow any negative memories of the year. ln compiling C.A.'s best ever seasonal record at 21-8, the Jets played in seven tournaments, winning four, placing third in another, and fifth in the Texas Association of Private Schools Tournament in Abilene, before ending their season in the TAPS State Tournament. In that tournament, the Jets beat Allen Academy before losing to Trinity to end the year. With a returning of four starters from last year's team, along with the addition of two new seniors, the Varsity had a mixture of experience and maturity with younger talent and it proved to be a winning combination. The Varsity started the year off with a flourish, winning nine games before suffering their first defeat. They slumped, however, after returning from Christmas, partly due to a rash of nagging injuries. But after hitting their lowest point in Abilene, the Varsity geared back up for the M.C.C.L. Tournament and proved again that they were the best team in that league. Going into the tournament in third place, the Jets beat Beverly Hills. Next, the Jets played Tyler St. and avenged two earlier losses, winning by 16 pts. In the championship game against Evangel Temple, the Jets again avenged an earlier loss, winning by two points on a last second shot by Ken Moore. Overall, this year will be remembered as the most productive and best seasons ever in the history of Varsity athletics at C.A.
