GARFIELD - I2 The Seahorses opened the 1956 season playing the more ex- perienced Group II Garfield on a very rainy afternoon. The first period was an even contest, but in the second, Garfield blocked a Christchurch punt, and after two first downs drove over for game's first score. A solid Christchurch line halted the conversion attempt. The wet ball caused many fumbles, and in the third quarter neither team was able to move the ball. Finally, in the fourth quarter the Seahorses again fumbled, and Garfield scored for the second time. Christchurch stopped the conversion. CHRISTCHURCH - I2 .... POQUOSON - 7 Christchurchls first home game was with the Islanders from Poquoson, a Group II school. Favored Poquoson marched 80 yards in the lirst quarter to score, but the Hghting Seahorses, capitalizing on the superb play of Tony lNilliams, Paul Williams, Wortie and Bill Ferrell, and Jim Alexander, came back to score two second half touchdowns. This win enabled Christchurch to even their rec- ord of one win, one loss. Wortie around end. N. A. snowed under CHRISTCHURCH-31 .... MATHEWS-6 Christchurch traveled to Mathews for their first night game of the season. The powerful Seahorses, lead by Tony Williams and Don McPherson, scored three times in the first half and twice in the second, to rout Mathews 31-6. Tony Williams, on runs of 13 and 16 yards, and Don McPherson each tallied a pair of touch- downs for Christchurch. McPherson scored on an 11 yard run and a pass interception. Bobby Fox also scored on a 1 yard plunge. CHRISTCHURCH -H 25 .... WEST POINT - 6 Christchurch's fourth game of the season was won against West Point High School, giving the Seahorses three straight wins. In the second period Sam Wallace scored the initial touchdown of the game when he slashed 3 yards off tackle climaxing a 48 yard Seahorse drive. The conversion was successful. Halfback Bobby Fox took the second half kick-off for Christchurch and adroitly scampered 98 yards for the second touchdown of the game. Later in the same period, a fumble recovered by Jim Alexander started C.S. on their third T.D. march which ended when Wortie Ferrell dove through the line for the Seahorses' third score. Christchurch's final tally was made by Dick Thompson, who scored on a hand- off. The Pointer's only touchdown was scored in the last quarter. NEW KENT f 6 Christchurch, using the one-two punch of Sam lYallace's run- ning and Wortie Ferrell's passing, handed New Kent its first defeat in a night game its own field. Wallace scored two touchdowns on runs of I2 and 13 yards respectively. Paul YVilliams tallied the third touchdown scampering 13 yards around right end. New Kent scored a lone touchdown late in the second half, but the devasta- ting attack of the Seahorses proved too much, and the score at the final whistle was 2146. Dick Thompson, Jim Alexander, Morti- mer Payne, and Vernon Norris turned in sparkling performances for the Seahorses. CHRISTCHURCH -19 .... ST. NORFOLK ACADEMY - I2 The aggressive Seahorses, enjoyed a very successful season, en- tertained Norfolk Academy in a game played in honor of the player's Dads. Behind the sparkling play of Don McPherson, Dick Thompson, Paul Williams, Wortie Ferrell, and Sam Wallace, Christchurch edged their rivals 18-12. Touchdowns were scored by Paul Williams, Wortie Ferrell, and Don McPherson, who inter- cepted a pass and streaked 78 yards to score. Don Kern scored twice for the losers on plays of 53 and 70 yards. Standouts in the line were Bill Ferrell, Brad Beverly, Vernon Norris, and Jim Harlan. CHRISTCHURCH-21 .... MIDDLESEX-7 The Christchurch Seahorses added another game to their wm- ning streak by defeating Middlesex High School 21-7. Quarter- back Wortie Ferrell completed 3 for 6 passes, bringing his average up to 65fk completions. The three touchdowns were made by Tony Williams, Paul Williams, and Dick Thompson. The Seahorses came roaring back in the third quarter, and after a long drive Wortie Ferrell banged over for the score. Jim Alexander converted to tie the score. The rest of the game was fiercely fought, but neither team could gain the advan- tage. The score at the end remained 7-7. QUANTICO-I4 A big crowd, a fine day, and a fighting spirit favored the Sea- horses in their annual Homecoming clash on Thanksgiving Day against Quantico High School. Dick Thornpson's 14 yard touch- down run started things off for Christchurch to cap a march of 81 yards. Speedy back, Paul Williams, added another touchdown in the same period and another in the second period. Williams ac- counted for three touchdowns of the game, scoring his last in the fourth quarter. Herbert lVolf played admirably in the center spot before his promotion to the varsity. Pete Kirkpatrick was nearly always a high scorer as he pumped them in from his forward position. Billy Lamm and Tom Holland alternated at center, while Wortie Ferrell and John Toole held the guard positions. john Stock was a consistent scorer and a several time high scorer. But this was a great step toward a plan to organize sports in which every student will participate. Mr. Parker was a very able coach, having been captain of the team at Mfesleyan. VVe sincere- ly hope that he will again give his time and effort next year to the advancement of this interesting and enjoyable sport newly introduced at Christ- church. It plans to equip the room with comfortable furniture, Ping-pong, and, possibly, a pool table. It anticipates fur- nishing the room through money raised by sponsoring movies and informal dances with St. Margaret's. The Monogram Club is an asset in school life and a necessity to athletic organizations.
