M I ,W 4 edlicczlfdcwz UR theme in this, the 1952 TIDES. is concerned with a brief restatement of the many activities that have taken place this year. Realizing that all of these contribute toward a more balanced life, We are also Well aware that these contributing factors do not exist by chance. They are brought about by the constant efforts and sacrifices of the administrators of the school. One man in particular has given us the friendship and spiritual guidance which We believe Will make us more fitted for the new experiences of life that We face. We believe him to represent all that Christchurch stands for: sturdy religious background, ap- plicable to one's college life, and his life as a Christian citizen of America. Therefore, We, the Class of 1952 wish to express our gratitude by dedicating this issue of CIRIDES to our esteemed Chaplain, Rev. Emmett H. Hoy, Jr. THE REVEREND EMMETT H. HOY, JR 0 E, the staff of TIDES 1952 have attempted to present pictorially the phases of Christchurch life which have made the school what it is this year: an active community in Which every citizen played a definite part. We have attempted to bring to light many of the less obvious, but equally important, activities, along With the more obvious ones. Perhaps in years to come this publication of TIDES Will help you to appraise the gains Which were yours at Christchurch in the year of our Lord Nineteen Hundred Fifty-two M ng l 0 ll Il 0 0 ll 2 O Il 0 0 0 ll 0 O O 0 0 ll ll 3 ll 2 0 ll Il 0 ll ll ll Ohtzcers of the General Board O ll THE RT REV FREDERICK D. One of their main, and most important, duties was to aid the administration in the better running of the school and school life. The Monitor corps also had the extra Week-ends and other privileges that Went along with their hard and important jobs, but We feel that they earned them and We admire the Way in which they did their tasks and yet stayed on the better side of the students. The Monitors for this school year were selected from the student body by the faculty and last year's Monitors on the basis of their leadership, school spirit, and their Willingness to Work hard to protect and make strong our honor system. HIS year the Student Council rose to the position intended for them: a channel through which the students could air their opinions on matters of school government to the administration. The Council gave honest consideration to all issues brought before them by the students, and exerted all their influence in seeing that sound suggestions were carried out. When matters concerning execution of the honor code had to be dealt with, this group counciled wisely, They attempted to carry to the new students the background and spirit of the honor system here at Christchurch. -...---..-------------------..-...-.,- 6 2559? HE Junior Vestry of Christchurch has as its main objective the arousing of interest in support of the Church by the boys. In addition to this, they performed such duties as decoration of the Chapel before the Christmas service, and collecting of the offering at the Sunday Worship in old Christ Church. General up-keep of Scott Chapel also fell in their list of duties, and they did a commend- able job. Experience was their gain as they put into practice what they have been taught about the church. ---AAA --- AAA -AAA -AAA ----------- AAAAA- ------ -ooooo 'x X 25535 THE CHOIR First Row flcft to rightb 1 Nwicky Harperi Billy Grove: David Herndon: Tim Bargaming Tommy Hunt: John McPherson. Regular practices were held Weekly, under the supervision of faculty members. The choir leads the singing in evening Chapel services, and participates in the Sunday services of the Parrish. They held a candle-light carol service just before Christmas vaca- tion, with the students and their parents in attendance. These boys, along with their leaders, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Marshall, should be congratulated for the fine job they have done. ooo' CHRISTCHURCH PLAYERS Kneeling: Billy Grove: Tom Hunt: Andy Martin: Ducky Truscott: Leighton Robertson. It is composed of students from the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades, and is under the super- vision of Mr. C. R. Working, Dean of the Lower School. The purpose of this group is to serve in a judiciary capacity over the entire Lower School. Doing a fine job in solving many problems, they proved themselves to be an important part of the school's student government. These boys are receiving training that will be a great asset to them, and they to the school, when they become the leaders of the Upper School in later years. -:lawn Scion! THE SEAHORSE, representing Christchurch in the newspaper field, appears once each month during the school year. The footfalls of the Publications Staff on the stairs in the last hours of night came to be routine to the boys. We hope that our efforts were to some avail. :x:::::x:::::Axxtx:-A . . 4 . THE PX STAFF Left to Right Ginks Watkinsg Bill Dalbneyg Gerry Cooper. chairman. HIS small group of boys takes care of operating the P.X., the school store located on the campus. It is their duty to buy all merchandise, keep track of bills, and take care of selling the goods to the students when they have a free moment and Want to enjoy a Coke or a candy bar. During exams the P.X. is left unlocked at all times, so that when boys take a break from their tests, they won't have to hunt down a mem- ber of the staff to open the store. This, as in other activities at Christchurch, is done under the honor system. Stamps, soap, and toothpaste are a few of the articles carried, in ad- dition to candy, ice cream, and soft drinks, for the convenience of the students. All profits of the P.X. go to the athletic fund for purchase of baseball bats, basketballs, and other equipment. By giving the boys a place to buy necessary items. a good portion of their money can be kept here at school, and goes back to the students in the form of the aforementioned equipment for their use. 7 2 sr. Those boys Who made up the squad had all the qualities and merits that any team could be expected to have. The team had great spirit on and off the field, and great teamwork at all times. By Winning a total of six games, While losing only one, and tying one, the Seahorses had one of their best seasons in history. Coaches Working and Bunting really kept the squad on their toes and kept them ready for all their opponents. The Orange and Blue was led on the field by their Co-Captains, Buzzy Cather and John Pollard. One of the most successful Christchurch games was their 18 to 18 tie with the highly rated Saint Stephen's at the CS Homecoming. DUNCAN sits AND wA1Ts ITQR A REBOUND ITH such a successful record in football this year, the Seahorse basketball team faced a big job in keeping up the good work. Fortunately, four of the starting five from the previous year were back again this year. At the end of the season, the record book read twelve wins against only five defeats - proof enough that the basket- ball team's goal of having as successful a season as did the football squad was an ac- complished fact. The successful season can be attributed to several facts: team work, spirit, and the coaching of Mr. Jere Bunt- ing, Jr. Next year only two of the starting five will return, but the new intramural pro- gram established this year should greatly aid in producing more material for the team. Under 'this program more boys are learning the fundamentals of the game while they are in the lower grades, and by the time they reach the age for Varsity competition, they have a well-rounded knowledge of the sport, Z ,-----------------.,--------------,------------------ CENTER Richwine C271 and Stuckey C295 watch Middlesex team work , LOWER RIGHT Street steals the ball against E.H.S. R Working, Coach. S TIDES 1952 goes to press, the baseball season has hardly gotten under way. Coach Working has stated that the disadvantage in high school baseball is the shortness of the schedule. He says that it tak-es the boys a few weeks to reach their peak, and by that tim-e only one or two games remain on the slate. Mr. Working also has noticed a deiinite cycle in high school baseball. He says that it takes about three years to develop a good team, and during that time wins will probably b-e few. It was believed that the Seahorses had gone through that stage of development, and would have the best season for many years in 1952. These hopes were dampened somewhat by the loss of two of last year's regulars at th-e end of the first semester this year. B111 Street holds down iirist base, and when he pitches Clem Holladay comes in from right Held to take his place. At second, as in the previous season, Buzzy Cather is in complete control. Don Richwine, last yeair's third baseman, this year will be a mainstay at shortstop. In the hot corner, third base, things are everything the name implies. Dan Dechert and Gerry Cooper are waging a battle royal at present to win the starting beirth. Coach Working says that here, as is true for the season as a whole, hard work and hustle will determine the outcome. Rounding out the traveling squad: in left field is Jeff Chase, a letterman, and John McPherson, a newcomer: center field, Bill Fitchett, who also will share the mound duties with Street, and will be replaced in center field by either Chase or Ginks Watkins: and in right field, a pair of roommates, Si Barnes and Clem Holladay, with Holladay also working out at first when Street is on the moundg and b-ehind the plate is Mark Wooding, veteran -catcher and baseball's representative 'to the Hall of Fame last year. Breaks, a little good weather, and a few base hits in strategic places could give the Seahorse Nine a winning season. -:p4:-.,-.--- 3 , 7 jg gf' fy ,ag p ' A5 .gc Jer. EMBERSHIP in the Monogram Club is one of the most prized achievements of a Christchurch student. The interest which is taken in the club by the boys, and the interest which they, as a group, take in the school makes each member proud to belong to such a club. The Monogramers entertained visiting athletic teams, sponsored social events, and contributed a new clock for the gym- nasium. This presents a clear picture of what the Monogram Club stood for: support of the goings-on in every phase of school life.
