There before him was a dark panelled drawing room, with a tall secre- tary standing in the far corner and black leather chairs drawn around the fire. Between the two huge, brass andirons, lay a blazing log which lighted the room and cast amber shadows on the silver tea service, which the butler brought in. The linal preparations had been Completed for the afternoon's entertainment. The tea tray was plaeed on the table and the hostess surveyed the room lt had been ten years since she had served such appetites as the old Class of '49 and she was a little skeptical about the food lasting. But when she saw the first arrivals emerge ing from the fog, her fare brightened into a smile, that was unmistakably lilr1u1rn .f lshe did get her millionaire after alll. Jznift entered and settled herself at the grand piano to provide the afternoon's amusement. The second guest to arrive was Ruth, popular author who recently re- eeived the Nobel l'ri7e for her latest novel, YVe Swept the State in WX , jlllbfl' and .lliriam, who were gailv rltattering about the little ones under their charge, joined the already gleesome threesome. XYhen Paula arrived she kept everyone enter- tained by telling of her profession as a Spanish teacher.
