Will it be a total war threatening civilization itself? Will there be a major depression with its blighting effects on the youth of the world? Will inflation increase till it becomes almost impossible for a young couple to marry and develop a home and family life? Will labor and management continue to fight stub- bornly to the detriment of both groups? Will our nation develop leaders capable of coping with the national and international problems that threaten our very existence? ' None of us knows the answer to any of these questions. And yet, the effect upon all of us because of these conditions will be great. What can we do? Where can we turn for assistance and guidance? Will there be any kind of a peaceful world for us? Whether national or international peace will prevail we do not know. We do know, however, that there is a peace within that can be attained by each one of us, a peace that passeth all understanding. Such a peace, or such a stabilizing in- fluence, can come from a deep, abiding faith in a Supreme Being who is ready and willing at all times to comfort us and to guide us, Each one of us can, and should, regard- less of faith or denomination, develop within us that profound, unshakable faith in the God of us all that will keep us steadfast and unmovable in the midst of life's turmoil. Can you think of any more worthwhile attainment for you? I cannot. When the jedge gave us nine months in the hoosegow we kind of bucked. But We cooled oft quick enough to put on a hoss opery Arsenic and Old Lace in December. It rolled 'em in the aisles at the school opery house. For the very first time in this here school, the '49ers got class buckskins. 'Peers mighty like they're gonna turn into a reg'lar deal. There was tree grub at the annual blow-out given for the Settlers by the '49ers. Naturally, everybody was there. Some crystal gazin' was done at the class day assembly, and the Last Will and Testament ol the pore old '49ers was read. On May 29th we put on our Sunday- go-to-meetin' clothes and listened to the parson. Then on Iune 2nd, the ab-so' loot-ly last roundup was held. But belore we scratch gravel, We reckon wed better let our star bronco bustors know We figure they did a mighty fine iob, We'd give recom- mendations for Mrs. Armstrong, Miss Auld, Mr. Vtfood, and Mr. Park to any ranch needing some top cowhands. The music was by the Selma Fiddlers. A few weeks later the Settlers again started panning for gold and put on a cake sale to get some of the kinks out of the cache. The Settlers' Play started the wheels rolling again, to be trailed by the Prom which finished oft good old l949. They start- ed the year with a get-acquainted meeting. There was Quite a turnout for this bull session. There were three hundred young buckaroos in the Pardners' Club this year, which boosted the money bags to seventy-tive bucks at two-bits per hombre. The purpose of the Pardners' Club was to keep the young mav- ericks straightened up and keep up the good will oi the boys. ln the past this club has shown the boys a good time with parties, and get-togethers. The top hands were: superintendent, Aldine Wesson, foreman, Top Chisholm, bookkeeper-paymaster, Bill Kile. The grubstakers were Coach Lueder and Coach Caywood. GIRLS' LEAGUE The Girls' League, with Mrs. Sagal as grubstaker, was really ropin' calves this year. The biggest dough-makin' project was selling doughnuts. The benefit project this year was the tixin' up ot the girls' rest roorns. The girls made points for their letters by doing any activity for their class or Bar CUHS. For a shin-dig this year a hi-jinlcs party was held and a Ma and Sis get-together which turned out to be a hum-dinger. Some of the other shin-digs in which the girls participated was a noon Christmas party and a Valentine party. The Chowchilla lunior Pair kept the girls busy preparing their exhibits. The annual Mothers' and Daughters' Tea and the end-of-theeyear picnic finished up a very suc- cessful year. Marilyn Rector was elected superintendent. This year three teams tried out and it was close competition tor the winning team which con' sisted of Benny Chidlaw, Sybil lennings and Bichard Beers. They introduced many new yells and did a lot tor the school spirit and morale of the teams in all sports. FIFTY-ONE On November 25, l948, the Chowchilla High School Band traveled to Long Beach, California, to take part in the 'All Western Band Review which took place on November 26 at about seven ocloclc in the evening, They competed aaainst thirty bands, but there were seventy bands in the entire parade, which lasted for three and a half hours and was twenty blocks long.
