Events of the year Perhaps the most eventful time in college life is moving into the residence hall to begin another phase in preparing for a life vocation. In the photo above, all the necessary items are unloaded and the most important of all is that TV! Early in the fall semester, the SADD chapter staged a rally at Lakeside Student Center with demonstrations, lectures and films. Area high school students joined Chowanians in learning more about the dangers of driving while impaired. The Art Club sponsored a Haunted House at Halloween and the members enjoyed scaring unsuspecting visitors. Entering the building was scary enough, eerie screams were heard, and spooky music was played. The big scare of the night came from Mr. Mitchell ' s foghorn, which sounded from the darkness as the Brown Lady and other spooks roamed the halls. Below, students enjoyed more quiet evenings throughout the year by attending the movies in Turner Auditorium which were spon- sored by the SGA. 24 Special Events

One of the real assets and strengths of the college is Whitaker Library, which becomes evident when measured by many stan- dards. Since its construction in 1968, the facility has broken through to become a leader among libraries at other institutions throughout the state and nation. A three-story structure, the library contains very adequate space for students and faculty in several reading areas with in- dividual carols and tables where small groups may study and work together. Built to shelve 100,000 volumes, Whitaker Library is well on the way to reaching full capacity, and this year contains more than 88,000 volumes of books. The library also houses items of historical interest to the college and the region, as well as the Baptist Collection of materials in the Antiquities Room. A very wide variety of periodicals and newspapers is available with more being added each month. Students attest that the library offers much more than books, reference materials, and periodicals, for it is a place for quiet study in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The very capable staff of librarians are always on hand to assist students in any way possible, whether it be in the operation of the microfilm and microfiche readers to information on an Early American novelist or a copy of a speech made by a past American president. HEARTLIGHT, a contemporary Christian rock band from Suffolk, Va. , made their third appearance at Chowan in January in Lakeside Student Center. The band, sponsored by the Baptist Student Union, played to an enthusiastic audience. Songs performed were a mixture of hits by popular Christian artists, such as Russ Taff, Stryper, and Petra, original songs by the band, and hymns with a new upbeat sound. A special surprise was in store for the BSD vice-president, Laura Ryals, as she was serenaded with a chorus of Happy Birthday . Band members included Mickey Turner, Mark Holland, Mark Fowler, and David Salerno. Assisting the group with lighting was Kelly Brewer, a student at Chowan. Christmas came, and a special service was held in front of Whitaker Library with Billy Gravey, president of the SGA, presiding, as seen below left. The Campus Christmas Tree, which has become a tradition, was lighted and special music was provided by the Stage Band, and Sharon Davis, soloist. In February, tragedy struck the campus when Mixon Hall burned in the early morning hours. The 48 residents were moved to other facilities, and work was begun to repair the dormitory.
