Lakeside a daily stop ' ' for Chowanians Let ' s go shoot pool at the Student Center! , says freshman Julie Gault. While shooting pool is not an everyday pasttime for Julie and her classmates. Lakeside Student Center is one of the daily stops in the routine of every Chowan student. The campus post office, located in the center, is a bee-hive of activity during each class break as students check their mail boxes for that letter from home which may contain a check! Vending machines are also busy during the class breaks for those who slept a little too late to make breakfast, or those who want to grab a snack before the next class. Lakeside Student Center offers a variety of entertainment and recreational op- portunities. It not only has pool tables, but ping pong tables and a variety of video games. The former basketball court has been converted into a roller skating rink, which is used several times during the year for dances and other social events. While students spend many hours in recreation and fun. they also make good use of the television lounge and reading rooms. And, when it comes to the usual chores of college students, the center also provides washing machines and dryers for those who do their own laundry. For fun. recreation, a quick snack, or checking the mail boxes, the Lakeside Student Center is, indeed, a daily stop in the normal routine of all Chowan students. Student Center 21

One of the real assets and strengths of the college is Whitaker Library, which becomes evident when measured by many stan- dards. Since its construction in 1968, the facility has broken through to become a leader among libraries at other institutions throughout the state and nation. A three-story structure, the library contains very adequate space for students and faculty in several reading areas with in- dividual carols and tables where small groups may study and work together. Built to shelve 100,000 volumes, Whitaker Library is well on the way to reaching full capacity, and this year contains more than 88,000 volumes of books. The library also houses items of historical interest to the college and the region, as well as the Baptist Collection of materials in the Antiquities Room. A very wide variety of periodicals and newspapers is available with more being added each month. Students attest that the library offers much more than books, reference materials, and periodicals, for it is a place for quiet study in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The very capable staff of librarians are always on hand to assist students in any way possible, whether it be in the operation of the microfilm and microfiche readers to information on an Early American novelist or a copy of a speech made by a past American president.
