The 1988 CHOW ANOKA to one who is the true friend of every student at Chowan College, and one who has been the confidant and mentor of many. He listens to our gripes. He chides us when our conduct is less than appropriate. He comforts us in times of distress. He counsels with us about our problems. He constantly encourages us to be the best that we can be. He urges us to develop our full potential — intellectually, spiritually, socially, and physically. In his personal life and conduct, he sets the example for what it means to be a total person. He has a real zest for life. We mark his enthusiasm in the classroom, in chapel assembly programs, in the Baptist Student Union Campus Christian Fellowship, in dramatic productions and in athletics. We admire him and lift up his example as worthy of emulation. In our admiration, we affectionately refer to him as The Tiger , The Chap , and the Pope . For all of these reasons and more, we, the students of Chowan College, dedicate the 1988 Chowanoka to a real Christian gentleman. Dr. R. HARGUS TAYLOR Chaplain to the College A man of many talents, Dr. Taylor is a regular performer witfi The Chowan Players in their annual drama productions. The Chap , an avid sports fan, is well-known on campus, and The Chaplain brings to the campus many noted and serves the students in many different ways, inspiritional assembly speakers Dedication 9 Moving in on a new era! It was a hot, humid day in late August, when the campus was invaded by many young people beginning a new era in their lives by moving into a residence hall and becoming a freshman college student! The parking lots were filled with loaded cars, trucks, vans, and trailers as students brought all the things necessary to make a dorm room seem like home! For some students, this was the first time of ever being away from home, being without Mom and Dad, and leaving all those high school friends. But with the welcoming gang in each residence hall helping each new freshman get settled, it was not long until everyone felt at home . For the returning students, moving in day was a time for renewing friendships . . telling of those summer experiences . , and making plans for that second year of study at Chowan. The sophomores are always a big help to the new students and assist them in learning their way around cam- pus and giving tips on how to be successful in college , . both in the classroom and out of the classroom ' ! A cool drink is delightful on the hot summer day of arrival. Friends and family assist in getting set up for the semester ahead. Bicycles will come in handy getting around campus and its good exercise! 10 MovingIn! Parents pay campus visit A special day for guests is observed each semester when parents visit the campus to spend time with a son or daughter, talk with their pro- fessors, and attend several social events Beautiful warm fall weather draped the campus in October when the parking lots were filled with automobiles and McDowell Columns was filled with parents meeting members of the administra- tion at the morning President ' s Reception, The classroom buildings were then filled as the parents visited with professors in their offices to learn of the academic progress of their son or daughter. These conferences proved to be very beneficial as parents and professors became better acquainted , and in some cases, the students became more motivated! The residence halls were also open to parents and other out-of-town guests, followed by a special buffet lunch in Thomas Cafeteria with entertainment provided by the the Chowan Stage Band under the direction of Professor Bob Brown , The parents were also special guests at the foot- ball game in the afternoon when the Braves battl- ed their archrivals from New York — Nassau Com- munity College In top photo, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Friendly, of Hartsville, S. Parents ' Day 11 Homecoming, floats, fiin, and football Mary Pickett and Diane Askew, two of Chowan ' s cheerleaders, ride a Murfreesboro fire truck in the parade which traveled through downtown Murfreesboro. At right bottom, the residents of Parker Hall provided a float which carried a casket and signs suggesting that the Braves would bury the Knights on the gridiron. 12 Homecoming A group of Parker Hall residents, headed by Dean Johnson, Warren Breniman, Steve Donahue and Chris Quesdea, provided an entry in the parade as seen below. Bottom photo shows the officers of the 1987-88 freshman class as they rode in a convertible to greet the spectators along the parade route. At left, Christi King is crowned Freshman Princess by Dr. Whitaker, and Mark Orfield looks on. Homecoming 87: floats, fun, and footbaU An old tradition broke through in 1987, when the Homecoming parade was moved back to a Saturday morning and followed a route from the campus through downtown Murfreesboro, to officially begin the annual celebration. The parade, sponsored by the Stu- dent Government Association, was one of the best in many years and showed both the creativity and spirit of Chowan students. Many alumni returned to the campus on the beautiful, warm day in early November to take part in the traditional receptions, class reu- nions, and a luncheon in the President ' s Dining Room. They re-lived their Chowan days to visit their old residence hall rooms, renew friendships with former professors, and to view the progress of the college since their gradua- tion. Amy Pierce, a physical education major, was crowned Homecoming Queen during halftime ceremonies of the football game, and Christi King was named Freshman Princess. The Chowan Braves made the day a perfect one by posting a come from behind victory over 10th ranked junior college team from Montgomery College, 27-24. The win was very special for several alumni, who were recognized at halftime, then inducted into the Chowan Sports Hall of Fame at a banquet later that evening. Receiving the special honor were Coach James Garrison, Coach Jerry Hawkins, and two former Brave athletes, Ben Rich of Newport News, Va., and Dave Whaley, of Newcastle, Del. 14 Homecoming Chowan ' s royalty for 1988, Miss Amy Pierce, Queen, and Miss Christ! Professor of Social Science, was the keynote speaker at the planting of the college ' s Constitution Tree. Tree is planted in observance of Constitution ' s Anniversary Amid an approaching storm, a large crowded gathered for the historic program. Bill Garvey,(far left) president of the SGA, presided at the indoor ceremonies. Former Congressman G. William Whitehurst was the featured speaker at the evening program. 16 Constitution Day A large number of students, faculty, staff and Mur- freesboro citizens assisted in covering the roots of the Constitution tree. Providing special music was Ben Sutton, Carla Chamblee, Valerie Sutton and Dr. James Chamblee. With the college bell tolling 200 times to signal the beginning of the ceremonies, Chowan College, with the Murfrcesboro communitv par ticipating, celebrated the Bicentennial of the Constitution in September with rousing speeches, a variety of music, banquets, presentation and salutes to the American flag, and the planing of the campus Constitution Tree. It was a great day, commented one professor, for it made you feel proud to be an American. SGA president Bill Garvey presided and welcomed the crowd of young and old assembled beside McDowell Columns, and introduced the college stage band, and a choral group of college personnel. Cecil Davis, president of the BSU. gave the invocation, and local Boy Scouts president the flag. The keynote speaker for the tree planting ceremony was Charles Paul, Professor of Social Science, who concluded his remarks with may each of us hope, and pray, that the emphasis of this bicentennial year will be in- strumental in spreading a clearer understanding for the Constitution of these United States of America. Later in the day, former Congressman G. William Whitehurst delivered an address in McDowell Columns to trace the history in the formulation of the Constitution. An engraved marker was placed at the base of the Constitution Tree signifying the occasion, and to remain for those who will be at Chowan College for the many, many years to come. Constitution Day 17 Fall drama production well done! Chowan Players present Devil ' s Disciple . SHAW AT CHOWAN A Review by Ken Wolfskill George Bernard Shaw made enough money from a New York production of The Devil ' s Disciple in 1897 that he could devote himself entirely to writing for a living It seems ironic that the socialist and social critic, most famous to us, pro- bably, for Pygmalion, should make a bundle exploiting the American au- dience ' s taste for melodrama Like the novelist who writes a pot-boiler so he can afford more senous work, Shaw resorted to an easy plot and simple characters, and attacked hypocnsy. a subject Amencans have always loved to hate about themselves. Still, the melodrama — setting staunch hero and distressed damsel against overwhelming circumstances and bad, bad folks — allowed Shaw to caricature the hypocnsy he despised, throw a few barbs at English arrogrance. and even suggest what seem to some to be his dangerous notions of the super- man So the play is interesting for G B S. enthusiasts and fine amusement as an example of nineteenth century melodrama Mrs Sandra Boyce ' s production of the play The Devil ' s Disciple , in the fall semester, had impressive moments with a fine cast Joyce Elliott, as a shrewish. Bible-quoting, self-righteous bigot, overwhelmed with her tyranny. Hargus Taylor quite realistically, smoothly, and interestingly, carried a difficult scene as the voice of Shaw ' s intellectualizing General Burgoyne The Leading Man, Richard Dudgeon, played by Fabian Rathbone, is best, perhaps, when, in the last scene, he takes on an added dimension — confusion and anxiety — to his character of man-of-the-world Jennifer Grooters, the maiden In distress, sus- tained the difficult air of breathless vulnerability, making a very attractive heroine The production went for laughs, however, as though melodrama, like ' The Young and the Restless, is not funny enough by its very nature Instead of either laughing at sentimentality presented senously of being able to sentimen- talize about pathetic people, we are asked to laugh at cartoons of life. The open- ing scene had the self-nghteous Mrs Dudgeon berating a dull-witted son, played convincingly by Chris Glasby Because he was made to play the drooling fool, he was really funny, and the audience did not have to be disturbed at all by the mothers abuse Indeed, the mother ' s important characterization is sacrificed for the fool Though the production was thus confused at times, asking the audience to laugh and think at the same time, there were also very witty caricatures, most notably in Mr Glasby, but also in Lisa Kirby. as the irregular child in the cor- ner, and in Jerry Weisman. a very clever performer, playing both Uncle William and the Sergeant The play was chosen for the fall production, in this bicentennial year, because the story involves the American Revolution But It was chosen also because It was written by one of the most important dramatists in literature Mrs Boyce is, thus, not only responsive to the area ' s cultural needs and desires she is also dar- ing 18 Fall Production The Cast MRS, DUDGEON JOYCE ELLIOTT CHRISTY CHRIS GLASBY ESSIE USA KIRBY JUDITH ANDERSON JENNIFER GROOTERS REV ANDERSON LENZY VIBBERT RICHARD DUDGEON FABIAN RATHBONE LAWYER HAWKINS KEN McKEE UNCLE WILLIAM JERRY WEISMAN SERGEANT JERRY WEISMAN MAJOR SWINDON ACHESON HARDEN GENERAL BURGOYNE HARGUSTAYLOR CHAPLAIN MICHAEL SUTTER SOLDIERS MICHAEL SUTTER KEN McKEE EXTRAS PARTICIA FLINT RAELYNN RICHARDSON DIANE FERKI JENNIFER MEKOVSKY SIDNEY RUFF PATRICK RUDOLPH The Production Crew DIRECTOR AND PRODUCER SANDRA BOYCE ASSISTANT TO THE DIRECTOR MICHELLE TURNER STAGE MANAGER LAURA RYALS ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER RAELYNN RICHARDSON LIGHTINGCREW BILLKNOWLES ' BRIAN ROSENBERG. Several times during the school year. Helms Center becomes a spacious auditorium to host the Fall and Spring Convocations and the spescial Founder ' s Day program. Physical education classes meet in Helms Center, and many students return in the afternoons and evenings to use the facilities for recreation and or physical fitness. The center is well equipped with a weight room, and Olympic-size swimming pool, three racquet ball courts, three basketball courts, and two volleyball courts, A steam room and sauna are also provided for the relaxation of students and faculty. Chowan takes great pride in the athletic events staged at Helms Center, which has become to be known as the Home of the Braves . Visitors to the facility, as well as students and faculty, are very impressed with the large display of trophies and awards in the lobby and the many banners which have been placed in the gymnasium signifying the many conference and tournament championships. 20 Helms Center Lakeside a daily stop ' ' for Chowanians Let ' s go shoot pool at the Student Center! , says freshman Julie Gault. While shooting pool is not an everyday pasttime for Julie and her classmates. Lakeside Student Center is one of the daily stops in the routine of every Chowan student. The campus post office, located in the center, is a bee-hive of activity during each class break as students check their mail boxes for that letter from home which may contain a check! Vending machines are also busy during the class breaks for those who slept a little too late to make breakfast, or those who want to grab a snack before the next class. Lakeside Student Center offers a variety of entertainment and recreational op- portunities. It not only has pool tables, but ping pong tables and a variety of video games. The former basketball court has been converted into a roller skating rink, which is used several times during the year for dances and other social events. While students spend many hours in recreation and fun. they also make good use of the television lounge and reading rooms. And, when it comes to the usual chores of college students, the center also provides washing machines and dryers for those who do their own laundry. For fun. recreation, a quick snack, or checking the mail boxes, the Lakeside Student Center is, indeed, a daily stop in the normal routine of all Chowan students. Student Center 21 Whitaker Library breaks through as a leader 22 Whitaker Library One of the real assets and strengths of the college is Whitaker Library, which becomes evident when measured by many stan- dards. Since its construction in 1968, the facility has broken through to become a leader among libraries at other institutions throughout the state and nation. A three-story structure, the library contains very adequate space for students and faculty in several reading areas with in- dividual carols and tables where small groups may study and work together. Built to shelve 100,000 volumes, Whitaker Library is well on the way to reaching full capacity, and this year contains more than 88,000 volumes of books. The library also houses items of historical interest to the college and the region, as well as the Baptist Collection of materials in the Antiquities Room. A very wide variety of periodicals and newspapers is available with more being added each month. Students attest that the library offers much more than books, reference materials, and periodicals, for it is a place for quiet study in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The very capable staff of librarians are always on hand to assist students in any way possible, whether it be in the operation of the microfilm and microfiche readers to information on an Early American novelist or a copy of a speech made by a past American president. Whitaker Library 23 Events of the year Perhaps the most eventful time in college life is moving into the residence hall to begin another phase in preparing for a life vocation. In the photo above, all the necessary items are unloaded and the most important of all is that TV! Early in the fall semester, the SADD chapter staged a rally at Lakeside Student Center with demonstrations, lectures and films. Area high school students joined Chowanians in learning more about the dangers of driving while impaired. The Art Club sponsored a Haunted House at Halloween and the members enjoyed scaring unsuspecting visitors. Entering the building was scary enough, eerie screams were heard, and spooky music was played. The big scare of the night came from Mr. Mitchell ' s foghorn, which sounded from the darkness as the Brown Lady and other spooks roamed the halls. Below, students enjoyed more quiet evenings throughout the year by attending the movies in Turner Auditorium which were spon- sored by the SGA. 24 Special Events HEARTLIGHT, a contemporary Christian rock band from Suffolk, Va. , made their third appearance at Chowan in January in Lakeside Student Center. The band, sponsored by the Baptist Student Union, played to an enthusiastic audience. Songs performed were a mixture of hits by popular Christian artists, such as Russ Taff, Stryper, and Petra, original songs by the band, and hymns with a new upbeat sound. A special surprise was in store for the BSD vice-president, Laura Ryals, as she was serenaded with a chorus of Happy Birthday . Band members included Mickey Turner, Mark Holland, Mark Fowler, and David Salerno. Assisting the group with lighting was Kelly Brewer, a student at Chowan. Christmas came, and a special service was held in front of Whitaker Library with Billy Gravey, president of the SGA, presiding, as seen below left. The Campus Christmas Tree, which has become a tradition, was lighted and special music was provided by the Stage Band, and Sharon Davis, soloist. In February, tragedy struck the campus when Mixon Hall burned in the early morning hours. The 48 residents were moved to other facilities, and work was begun to repair the dormitory. § I J Assemblies become Chowan tradition A special time is set aside each week for assembly periods, and every student attends one of the sessions in Turner Auditorium of McDowell Columns. Freshmen students attend programs on Monday of each week, with the sophomores and transfer students assigned to the Wednesday programs. A wide range of programs is offered to make the assembly periods as interesting and informative as possible, with occasional programs being of religious nature. Numerous guest speakers are invited to present programs on a variety of topics, including current news events and topics. In addition, throughout each semester several guest speakers present programs on religious topics. The assembly sessions have become a Chowan tradition and each student is fully aware that attendance is a vital part of his weekly schedule. Though some students choose to spend the time to cat nap , read, or catch up on homework, the vast majority of those attending listen attentively to get full benefit from the offerings. Special Convocation services are held at the beginning of each semester in Helms Center, whereby all members of the student body, faculty and staff may gather at the same time. The Convocations, too, have become a campus tradition with very well-known and successful individuals leading the services. Students never hesitate to testify that the most interesting of all assemblies are the presentations in the fall and spring semester acts from drama productions by the Chowan Players, and the speical holiday programs at Christmas and Easter which feature fellow students and faculty members. 26 Assembly Each week an hour is set aside on Monday and Wednesday for Assembly, which is administered in Turner Auditorium located mside the McDowell Columns building. Mondays are normally attended by Freshman and Wednesdays by Sophomores. A wide range of programs are offered, to make assei.ibl.es as interesting as possible. Topics cover from guest speakers to religious services. Though some students choose to sleep the hour away most sit listening attentively to the interesting programs. At the beginning of each semester Special Convocation services are held in Helms Center with the entire student body on hand. One of the most interesting of all assemblies is the Fall and Spring drama productions, and the holiday programs featuring sometimes talented fellow students. Below, the refree keeps a close eye on the players following a huddle to begin another play in flag football. The girls were very competitive on the gridiron and the contests were very exciting. Through the school year, there is much competition among students as they engage in a variety of intramural sports. The program is organized and administered under the direction of Mr. Jodi Taylor, who also serves as director of the student center and head coach of the varsity wrestling team. With competition scheduled between residents hall and the several floors of each, the students compete in flag football, basketball, volleyball, pool, ping-pong, Softball and racquetball. Each residence hall floor sponsors a team and the four teams with the best record meet in a play-off at the conclusion of the season. In addition to the entertainment, exercise, and comradship gained from intramural competition, residence halls receive points which are averaged with other factors in the competition for the conveted Presi- dent ' s Cup . At left, Kim Pendergrass and Marsha Merinna express hap- piness in a victory, which will mean additioneJ points for their residence hall in the comp etition for the President ' s Cup . Intramural Sports 29 Squirrel Park, campus playground Chowan is noted for its circular drive, lined with flowering dogwoods, and enclosing a beautiful lawn area that students affectionately call Squirrel Park. Whether it be covered in a wintry snow or bursting forth in springtime color, the area is a favorite place for students to spend their leisure time, and they are often setn playing a pick-up game of flag football, throwing a frisbee, practicing golf, or playing baseball. Some students like to relax or just enjoy the summer sunshine and fresh air and to talk with friends in the park, or simply unwind after a day of classes and those hours of study which follow. £J ?:: ' ■ ■ ' tJi f . 6 « mwm- ' ' :- -: ' mE ' ' i ' ' -A . With the walkway, lined with ancient oaks and elm trees dividing the park, many different types of activities may be held. At the same time, space is available for those who wish to enjoy the area to study, read, or be with friends. Right, Mrs. Gatewood cashes a check for a student. Books, banking at Bookstore Whether the need is for textbooks, bookbags, greeting cards, toilet articles or monogrammed clothing, students find the campus student store the place to shop. At the beginning of each semester, the student store is one of the busiest places on campus as students purchase textbooks and other supplies needed for the semester ' s study One of the most popular services of the bookstore, however, is the cashing of checks. Mrs. Aldeen Gatewood, manager, stays quite busy on Thursdays and Fridays as students cash their checks to cover ex- d; Of for other Subs, snacks, shakes at Snack Bar Between classes, in the evening, on the weekends, and sometimes after meals upstairs, the Snack Bar is a busy place serving sandwiches, soft drinks, ice cream and the all-time favorite — hamburgers! With television and conveniently ananged furniture, the Snack Bar is a gathering place for students and faculty for meals, snacks and to wait for the next class. Commuting students especially find the facility ideal as a place to study, and they join their classmates to hear of campus news and other happenings. Gladys Vaughan prepares a Brave Burger for a regular customer at the Snack Bar. Below, right, Mrs. Linda A table for four ..to study and to Thompson, manager, completes an chat! order. The Snack Bar is a meeting place for faculty and staff each day at noon, when several tables are brought together for the group which has the noon meal in the Snack Bar every day. Snack Bar 33 Thomas Cafeteria caters to food, fellowship The one place on campus which is a bee hive of activity three times a day is Thomas Cafeteria with students and faculty packing the building for food and fellowship. Even though some complaints can be heard concerning the food, there are few students missing the daily meals and the op- portunity to meet with friends to catch up on the latest campus news and enjoy friendships and fellowship. Several times throughout the year, the food staff serve special meals in obsevance of holidays as well as steak nights , Halloween buffets and dinner on the green . The dining room is packed during the noon meal as seen at far right. Students enjoy preparing their own salads from the attractive salad bar. At left, friends gather in Thomas Cafeteria to chat and to offer ad- vice for their next class. Above Yolanda Faile enjoys one of her favorite lunches. a grilled cheese sandwich. 34 Thomas Cafeteria Picturesque Lake Vann popular place Chowan ' s campus is a very pretty place, and countless visitors make complimentary remarks of the beauty which surrounds the campus, and the beauty is particularly outstanding during the spring and fall of each year. Perhaps one of the most at- tractive locations is Lake Vann, which is a favorite place with students. Named in honor of George L. Vann and located to the rear of the main campus. Lake Vann is enjoyed by all students and is a place many fond memories eire formed each year. During the warm, sunny days of spring, students may be seen sitting around the lake enjoying the beauty as well as the quietness and the opportunity to be alone or chat with friends. Canoes are available from the Student Center for those who wish to be on the lake and watch numerous geese and ducks who call Lake Vann their home. In addition to the leisure offerings, the lake provides a classroom laboratory for the physical education class in Bait Casting, and students learn the art of fly casting and other fishing techniques. When fall comes, the lake becomes a picturesque scene with the brilliant fall colors cast by the bordering trees. The scene changes in winter as snow sometimes outlines the shore lines and the cold temperatures form patches of ice on the surface. Regardless of the season. Lake Vann is a place of beauty and it will be remembered by students for many yeeirs to come as they reflect upon their Chowan days and the many memories of their college years. Lake Vann 35 Weekends? 36 Weekends Wonderful weekends are relaxing rewards Mondays may be magnifi- cent.. Wednesdays may be wonder- ful. and Thursdays may be terrific. but the wonderful weekends begin on Fridays!! It ' s the two days students look forward to as a reward after a busy week in the classroom filled with lectures, labs and tests! Students use their wonderful weekends in a number of ways with some catching up on lost sleep, some en- joy recreation in Helms Center or Lakeside, some go home or to a friend ' s home, AND. some even use the two day break to study and prepare for the next week of classes. Every student will testify that the weekend is used to the very best ad- vantage and perhaps this is true. One freshman student remarked I don ' t do ANYTHING on weekends, and that is using it to good advantage, because I need a couple of days of nothing to prepare me to do something! Weekends. . .What really goes on? John Brigmen... normally I go to Chapel Hill for a meaningful night of entertainment. Troy Robertson... either I go to O.D.U. to party or hit the beach at Hatters to conquer the waves. Lori Lawson... normally I either go to the movies or a basketball game. And I like to play pool. Cross Mr. Bobby Cross has served loyally and effectively as Chowan College ' s Director of Development since July, 1970. We regret that he is now confined to his bed because of illness. In his position at the college, Bobby Cross brought an enthusiasm and optimism to his job and Chowan College that was infectious. He believed deeply in Chowan and the importance of its mission of educating young men and women within a Christian environment. He believed that people — members of the faculty and staff, alumni and friends, and area citizens — are the college ' s most important resources. Loving young people, he dedicated himself to providing the support and resources to assure Chowan ' s students a quality education. He worked long hours — often day and night — to accomplish his goals and dreams for the college and its students. It is obvious that for many reasons Bobby Cross is missed. We miss his services which expanded and advanced the development program and produced record gifts for the college ' s campaigns and programs. We also miss his optimism, enthusiasm and cheerfulness. We are grateful for his life, and his service to area churches and to Chowan College. He has left his mark; he will not be forgotten. Its primary pur- poses are to foster and provides wor- ship, Bible study, mission opportunities, and fellowship among those who share in its activities, and throughout the large campus community. Directed by stu- dent officers Councils — with Chaplain to the College as advisor — the group participated in weekly general meetings, a Wednesday morning prayer breakfast, and monthly visitations to Pinewood Manor Rest Home in nearby Ahoskie. Broader contact with other Christian students and opportunities for mi ssion engagement beyond the local campus setting are provided through the organization ' s cooperative relationship with the campus ministries programs of the Division of Youth Campus Ministries, and Baptist State Conven- tion of North Carolina, Chaplain Taylor, advisor to the B.S.U., is a man of many talents — as he showed us in this year ' s fall production. 1 18 Clubs Organizations A scene from the fall drama production depicts the active involvement of many students and faculty with The Chowan Players. Players ' fall production focuses on Constitution In the year of the Constitution, The Chowan Players decided to do Shaw ' s The Devil ' s Disciple. The play is a melodrama set against the strict Pruitan ethics of the eighteenth century. Dick Dudgeon, who calls himself the devil ' s disciple, has been brought up in a household where the Pruitan religion has become an excuse for his mother ' s strick and cruel treatment of others. Dick stands for practical, healthy goodness. He is a person who does a good deed when it needs doing. He appears to be against his mother and the church, but his behavior is quickly shown to be his honest protest against the sham and hypocrisy displayed by his mother. When Dick is put to the test, he proves to be capable of great self sacrifice and loyalty. This play expresses a fundamental philosophy that there is something good in the nature of every man which, when put to the test, responds to the highest demands made upon it. This melodrama by Shaw has many of the old fashioned stage devices: a hero in disguise; a married woman so attracted to him that his departure leaves her in a swoon; the return of her husband causing misunderstanding; and an exciting finale in the courtroom. Fabian Rathbone portrayed Richard Dudgeon in the Devil ' s Disciple. Clubs Organizations 119 Day students active on campus Most of the students at Chowan live in one of the campus dorms. But there are about 50 students who daily drive, walk or ride their bikes to the college. These students are considered Day Students. The Day Students meet at the end of Wednesday assemblies, where Kathy Whitley; president, and Mrs. Batchelor, advisor, conduct the business of electing representatives for the Homecoming and Spring Festival Courts. They also organize various other fund raising activities from which the proceeds are put into a scholarship fund. Then at the end of every year a freshman day student with the highest academic average and who has par- ticipated in the Day Student activites recieves the scholarship. The Day Students, because they live off campus, may not participate in as many campus activities as resident students. Even so they are a vital part of our campus and academic life. This year ' s Day Student Officers are: Kathy Whitley, President; John Ed- wards, Vice-President; John Hazelton, Secretary-Tresurer; and Karen Parker, SGA Representative. Day Students, Twyla Duke and Karen Parker meet between classes to make arrangements for their lunch break. 120 CIubs Organizations Some of the iniei national students assemble in Lakeside Student Center to become better acquainted and to learn of different cultures. Kumiko Kanzaki, an Art Major from Japan; speaks with art teacher Doug Eubank between classes. Internationals add culture International students are an im- portant part of the environment of Chowan College. There are presently 31 students on campus from foreign countries such as Japan, Thailand, Greece, Nigeria, and England. There are also students from Hong Kong, Singapore, and nearby Canada and the Bahamas. These students major in a variety of programs such as fine arts, liberal arts, science, math, pre- engineerlng, computer programming and applications, and business. As can be expected, foreign students lend the campus a cosmopolitan atmosphere not readily seen on small campuses. The advisor to international students is D. H. Nicholson, Registrar to the college. He is a member of the National Association for Foreign Affairs and also keeps up with the Immigration and Naturalization Service regulations governing international students in the United States. Mr. Nicholson says that the staff and faculty at Chowan College want the international students to have a worry-free, and successful stay. He states further: We all know that in- ternational students are important for Chowan College, and we appreciate the unique contribution each of them makes to this community. Throughout orientation the leaders are easily spotted by their Chowan College T-shirts that conveniently display their names. During each of the sessions the leaders are expected to work with groups of students, help give placement tests, and set up refreshments for students and parents. They also serve the new students by answering questions about academics and campus life with an ex- perienced student point of view. Orientation brings a closer look at Chowan for the new students. Not only has Coach Burke developed new freshmen talent into a winning force, but he ' s also passed excellent sophomore talent on to four-year institutions in the past and definitely for many years to come. The Chowan Braves returned five sophomores from a team that went 27-5 a year ago and they were the Eastern Division Regular Season Champions. The Braves opened their 1987-88 season with three consecutive wins on their home court Two of the first three games were played in the Chowan hosted Northeastern Businessmen ' s Classic which included three nationally ranked teams. The format of the classic was devised in keeping with Coach Burke ' s scheduling philosophy. Chowan will get the opportunity to play nationally ranked teams which backs up my earlier statement of us playing as tough a schedule as there is on the east coast, said Burke. Over the Thanksgiving Holiday, the Braves traveled to Ocala, Florida, and returned as champions of the Central Florida In- vitational Tournament. , With scoring punch off T . the bench from freshmen Terry Massey and Marvin Maynor, the Braves had crisp execution both of- fensively and defen- sively throughout the tournament and showed themselves to be the class of the field. The Braves remained undefeated in the Region X play (7-0) with their victory over Lenoir Community College. John McNeil became the second Brave to score 30 or more points in a game this season as the sophomore poured in the game high of 30 points. On Janueiry 27, Gziry Mattison established a new Chowan single game record in a 104-84 victory over Craven Community College. The sophomore poured in 45 points to break the long standing mark of 43. Four other Braves also posted double figures with Terry Massey netting 14, Sean Andrews 11, John McNeil and Johnny McNeil 10. The Chowan Braves had another 20 plus win season for the record books and Coach Burke clinched his 200th victory over ar- chrival Louisburg. Avenging on an earlier loss to Louisburg, the Braves defeated the Hurricanes 84-72. High scorer was Mattison with 20 points. John McNeil was next with 16, Johnny McNeil 15, Kevin Dennis 11 and Terry Massey 10. The Braves met Belleville Area Community College of Illinois. Taking a 17-2 lead early in the game, the Braves came out like gangbusters. The Dutchmen were frustrated by the defensive agressiveness thrown at them and were unable to score a field goal in the first seven minutes and 36 seconds, but closed to within three points at the four minute mark and by halftime, the scoreboard showed a 34-34 tie. In the second half, as the Braves shooting continued to cool down, the Dutchmen brought the score to 61-59. After a hard defensive clampdown, the clock expired with the ball in Belleville ' s possession, sending Chowan into the consolation bracket. If • ■ ' • In their second game, the Braves were back in action against a very big Jacksonville team from Texas. The entire game was played at a very high intensity level and neither team could mount a significant lead during the first half. Similar to the Belleville game, the Braves second half shooting slipped while Jacksonville ' s held steady. Trailing by nine (71-72) with only 2:31 remaining, the Braves would not throw in the towel and made a valiant attempt at pulling this one out. Four points from John McNeil and a Massey layup cut the deficit to three (71-68) with 31 seconds left. Fouled with only 3 seconds left in the game, Mattison made his first free throw and intentionally missed the second. The long shot strategy didn ' t work as Jacksonville controlled the rebound and claimed a 71-69 victory to end Chowan ' s season. Coach Burke summed up the feelings of the team with these words, It has been a great year. We know we have one of the best programs in the country, but we ' re just a couple of points short in each game. I am very proud of this team and its 28-6 record is a tremendous accomplishment . Last season, the Braves were 17-15 and this year ' s squad is expected to be much improved. The team should be a good hitting group, but has some weakness in fielding. After a successful pre-season schedule, the Braves had a good attitude and some excellent sophomore pitching. Returning to the squad from last year are Toby Fisher at second base, and Dean Thomas at third. Walter Denby, a first baseman, hit .222 last year and expects to improve during the 87-88 season. Tracy Stillwell returned as the Braves ' leading outfielder, after hitting .360 last year. Also returning for another year of play is All- Conference Billy Wright. Prior to the beginning of the football season, the returning members of the cheerleading squad hosted a cheerleading camp for students of Lawrence Academy, located in Merry Hill. Ap- proximate ly 70 students attended the special training, which provided instruction in basic cheering techniques, as well as squad and individual routines. The team, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Elaine Casmus, played an active role in the athletic programs throughout the year.
