The first Annual Women ' s Powder Puff Football Game gave the freshman and sophomore women a chance to show off their athletic abilities and compete in inter-class competition. Both teams were coached by college students and each squad had a full roster of female grid- ders representing their respective classes. The powder puff classic, staged in early December, was played in the college stadium before a very large number of spectators. The sophomore squad jumped to an early lead in the contest and held off the young and aggressive freshmen to claim a hard-fought victory. In addition to the game itself, additional entertainment was provided on the sidelines by The Loving Spoonful , a squad of male cheerleaders, complete with mini-skirts and pom-poms. There were many times throughout the contest when spectators enjoyed the performances of the cheering squad as much as they did the action on the gridiron! The First Annual Women s Powder Puff Football Game was cited as a big success, and an event which will surely be added to the long list of Chowan traditions. At the begin- ning of this hour, students are observed making their way to the assemblies, with freshmen attending on Mondays and sophomores and commuting students on Wednesdays. A variety of programs are of- fered, to include religious ser- vices, speakers on a variety of topics, films, etc.. and the hour is used to make numerous an- nouncements which are beneficial to the entire student body. The vast majority of students listen attentively and use the hour for enrichment, but others sometimes may be observed catching up on class homework, or getting a quick rest between classes. At the beginning of each semester, special Convocation services are held in Helms Center with the entire college community in attendance. These sessions usually feature noted speakers, outstanding alumni, or college officials. Student favorites of the assembly programs are ex- cerpts from the fall and spring drama productions, the special holiday presentations, and the programs featuring talents of fellow students. A. During the warm weather, students may be seen sitting around the lake enjoying leisure times. Often, these quiet moments are interrupted by ducks or geese as they wander the area they consider home . Lake Vann also serves as a lab for the physical education classes in fly fishing, and sometimes students wet a line to see if they can catch that big bass! Canoes are available at Lakeside Student Center for students to use on the lake. When winter settles in and the temperature drops to sub- freezing levels, the lake is covered with ice and provides a picturesque winter scene. Though discouraged by college officials, some students have been seen using the ice-covered lake as an ice skating rink and a place to test courage! In all seasons, however. Lake Vann is a popular place with students and is a favorite spot to enjoy quietness and beauty. Scenic bridge is an easy access to Helms Center and classes in physical education. He leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteous- ness for his name ' s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies; thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. -Psalm 23 In Memoriam 117 Straight from the horse ' s mouth... We were reading the story in I Sam. 18 when Saul told David, All the king wants from you as payment for the bride are the foreskins of a hundred dead Philistines, as revenge on his enemies. ..David and his men went and killed two hundred Philistines. He took their foreskins to the king. At this point a shy, pretty co-ed asked, What did they do - cut off their heads? Esther A. Whitaker In a touching scene in The Glass Menagerie, a candelabra was burning while Laura and the gentleman caUer danced. A large clump of wax fell, igniting newspapers underneath. Tom, Laura ' s brother, came into the scene with lemonade for the couple, put out the fire and carried the burning candelabra offstage. The scene went along smoothly and no one missed a line. Sandra Boyce New faculty members (Mr. Hawkins, Mr. Garrison, Miss Crouch, Mr. Master and II at Chowan in 1958 were guests of Dr. and Mrs. Whitaker one evening that fall. When it was time for the Whitakers ' young son, Barry, to retire, he was instructed to tell us goodnight. This he did and then ran over to Miss Crouch, grabbed her by the neck, and began hugging and kissing her. Verbal in- structions were not sufficient to encourage Barry to stop his hugging and kissing. Needless to say, a good laugh was enjoyed by all, as Barry was carried off to bed. L. M. Wallace One of the International printing majors was surprised to see me working at a local gas station one evening. Why are you working here? he asked. To make money, I answered. To further explain to the student, I said, Here in the United States, when you work at a part-time job in addition to your regular job, it is called moonlighting. Sometime later, the student was traveling with the Dean of Students and during the trip he asked the Dean. Did you know Mr. SoweU moonshines at night to make money? William B. SoweU One of the best students in class was intently leaning over his textbook. When I called on him. we discovered that this fine student was not intently reading but soundly sleeping! Joyce EUiot Students enrolled in my medical terminology and transcription have a very difficult time learning the ter- minology and oftentimes will transcribe what they think they have heard rather than what a word actual- ly is. Edwards On a test in O.T. a student identified circumcision as the benificent Persian conqueror . One class a student referred to the course manual, at that time called a syllabus • as the syphilis given the class at its first meeting Earl H. Parker It has fallen my lot to teach remedial courses, so my students do not always write perfect English. At the end of the Reading I sometimes ask the students to evaluate the course and make suggestions as to how they think it could be improved. One of my agreeable but not-so- knowledgeable students wrote this on his evaluation: It alright. Just leave it like it are. I could go on and on giving amusing remarks that I have found on compositions. Did you know that imagery is a metal picture? Or that Aristotle ' s influence on tragedy is his belief that the tragic hero is a statue? Or that Oedipus gouged his own eyes out and then wished to die in the dessert? Isn ' t it wonderful the things that we teachers teach ? Betty N. Batchelor Several years ago, a young man came to see me and re- quested excused absences for a number of days. He went on at some length, talking about the death of an uncle who had served as his guardian. As chance would have it, during the course of our conversation my telephone rang. On the line was the very uncle, calling to check on the progress of his nephew. With the young man sitting in my office, I congratulated the uncle on his remarkable recovery. B. The squad, thin on sophomore ex- perience, was dependent upon young freshmen to play impor- tant roles somewhat premature- ly. Through the first six games, the Braves rallied past Newport News Apprentice only to be held in check the following week by nationally ranked Harford. A long trip to upstate New Yo rk saw Chowan thrash Hud- son Valley but again the follow- ing week Region X rival Lees- McRae tripped the Braves. A seesaw battle against East Carolina ' s J.V ' s provided the Braves ' third win but the follow- ing week. Garrison watched his team fall flat on their faces at Virginia Tech. The Braves promptly put together a pair of impressive wins against Wesley and Potomac State before a rash of injuries befelled the Braves as they dropped their last two games to Nassau and Newport News. But the roller coaster had not ended. ..not quite yet. The season saw Coach Jim Garrison become the sixth winningest coach in junior college football. Chowan, also, hosted the coastal Con- ference AU-Star Game where two Braves particularly honored themselves. QB Lonnie Mister was named Offensive Player of the Game while DB Dexter Moore was voted the ' Defensive Player of the Game . Mighty Braves get through the tough defense. Although the Lady Braves were 4-20 on the year they did lose many close games and had several strong senior colleges on their schedule. Coach McKeel says the season was not a total loss in terms of figures. There will be four returning freshmen who at one time or another played starting roles for the Lady Braves. Two of those players received high honors this past season, Rosalyn Flood was named to the All-Region X team and was also named Defensive Player of the Year for the Lady Braves. Rosalyn led the entire Region in steals and was leading rebounder and second scorer for the Chowan women. Melanie Sawyer was named to the All- Conference team as was sophomore Valerie Boyd. Melanie received offensive player of the year for the Lady Braves and was voted the teams MVP by her team-mates. Sophomore Glenda Dailey was honored for her outstanding performance in the conference tournament by being named to the All- Tournament team. Two other freshmen who should make their mark next season are Judy Par- sons and Barbara Lewis. It marked the ninth consecutive season in which the Braves had recorded at least 20 wins. It also marked the ninth consecutive year in which men ' s basketball teams at Chowan had earned a berth in the Region X Tournament of the National Junior College Athletic Associa- tion. Led throughout the season by the inside play of the 6 ' 7 Twin Towers (Ronnie Bellamy— 17.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game; and Kenny Reynolds— 18.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game), the team was hindered in its attempt to compile an even better overall record by the loss of Mike Pulley, sophomore point guard, throughout much of the season. Pulley sustained a wrist injury in late November which kept him sidelined until early February. In looking ahead towards 1986-87. the coaching staff— led by head coach Bob Burke, whose six-year stint at Chowan has seen Braves teams amass an overall record of 150-41— must look to replace five sophomores, including Bellamy and Reynolds. Only one of three losses was to a junior college and the Braves were ranked in the NJCAA Top 20 the entire season, placing thirteenth in the final poll. Despite some key injuries, the team placed second in the Mid Atlantic Conference Tournament and advanced five wrestlers to the National Junior College Championships at DuPagc Col- lege in Chicago. Heavyweight Dennis Cannon won his first three matches and placed sixth in the tournament, qualifying as an AU-American. He became only the fourth wrestler in Chowan ' s history to achieve that status. Tom Elphick (118). Ted Pitrone 11421, Greg Miller (158), and Chris Moore (1901 also qualified for the National Tour- nament and helped the Braves to a twenty-sixth place finish out of sixty-one teams. Softball has taken on a new look at Chowan for the 1986 season. This was Chowan ' s first year in fast pitch softball and it took some time for the team to adjust. The Lady Braves had a very tough 32 game schedule with many senior colleges as their opponents. The Chowan women were under .600 during their first year in fastpitch and gave up some close and tough losses.
