At this point, you may not be aware of how important your day at Chowan College has been. But others are more likely to notice the changes. Your stay at Chowan is one of the most important times of your life! For the first time, you have been on your own. You have had the opportunity to grow and mature mentally, physically, and spiritually. You have learned to set priorities and carry through with responsibilities. You have been asked to think for yourself and to make decisions on your own. You have been introduced to new subjects and new vistas have been opened to you. You have been exposed to many different ideas and experiences privileges in your classes and on campus. You have learned to live with other people whose values and way of life may differ from your own. There is another day waiting around the corner for each of you. That day wilt come when you return to Chowan next year to continue your studies or when you have completed your studies here and moved on to either a career or further studies at a four year college. At Chowan, you have developed a background of ex- perience and knowledge that will open doors for you in the juture. May I wish for each of you the best in the days and years ahead and encourage you to remember and ap- preciate how important your day at Chowan has been. In all your pursuits, remember the biblical admonition to redeem your time. Bruce E. Whitaker President Dedication The woman to whom we dedicate the 1983 Chowanoka is well-known throughout the campus community. Her presence and influence are felt much beyond the classroom. While teaching English and drama and directing college theatrical productions, she has come to be for many students a teacher, an advisor, a director, and most importantly, a friend. The larger portion of her time is spent staging and directing two productions a ytar. As is evi- dent in the accompanying picture story, she not only directs, but becomes actively involved in all aspects of a production Her unending stamina, devotion, wit and charm have earned for her the respect and love of everyone she has touched. For all of her dedication, attention and concern for Chowan and her students, we proudly dedicate the 1983 Chowanoka to Sandra Boyce BOARD OF TRUSTEES CLASS OF 1983 Mr Randv ' . Brixton Mr T. Starting all of this was the homecoming parade. The parade began on Vance Street, proceeded down Main St. and concluded on the west side of McDowell Columns. The automobiles transporting PresidentWhitaker. Mayor Billy Hill, and the Homecoming court candidates were classics and antiques belonging to a local col- lectors ' sclub. The funeral was directed by Thomas Gale and the service was performed by Dr. Earl Parker. Once the eulogy was complete, the effigy was condemned to suf fer cremation by bonfire, Disappointingly, there was lit tie remorse over the fate of the Knight. They were coming off of an 8-3 season that included the East Bowl win. The Braves were to be questionable in the offensive backfield. but there was a lot of desire as they took the field to open the season. As the weeks went by. the Braves put things together. When the season was over, six players had been named to the All-Conference Team. Days later and the announcment of the All Region Team, found nine Chowan names listed. The season ended with a six, three, and one record. Two of those losses could only have been described as nightmares for the Braves. Tied ten to ten with Ferrum at the half the Brave ' s chances looked good until the roof fell in. Later in the season, things really went from bad to worse in the loss to Nassau. As the Chowanoka goes to press, the Braves are in the midst of spring drills. Coach Jim Garrison says the Braves look good for the 1983 campaign. Our defensive backs and running backs will be impressive this year, says Garrison. fi  I ' ; %H ' ' ' i i , j - ' ' s i: v - 1 Anthony Baynard, 2 Keith Doyle, 3 Terry .Smith, 4 Tracy Evans, 7 Jeff Gethers, 8 Paul Thomas, 9 Brian Phillips, 11 Daniel Smith, 13 Michall Bowser, 14 Mark Royals, 15 Eddie Isley, 16 Terry Graham. 17 Dennis Dcott, 20 Paul Vinson, 21 Rodney Anderson, 24 Jeff Knox, 25 Mark Brown, 26 Graylyn Gregory , 27 Tim Pittman, 28 Roy Dalton, 29 Reggie Cobb, 30 Lawson Cottingham, 31 Clarence James, 32 Bruce Terrell, 33 Donald Flecher, 34 Lindberg Frazier, 35 Joe Greene, 37 Glenn Andrews, 38 Tim Wallace, 40 Curtis Thompson, 41 Doug Starz, 42 Paul Zedalis, 43 James Brock, 44 Thomas Whitehead, 45 Thomas Bellamy, 46 Jon Layton, 47 Robert Billings, 48 George Busby, 49 Terry Blowe, 50 Rick Coulson, 51 Mike Gish, 52 Terry Brandon. 54 Mike Barrett, 55 James Thornton, 55 Danny Thomas. 56 Errick Edwards, 57 Joe Stoever, 58 Richard Harden. 59 Doug Gabriel. 60 Carl Isaac. 61 Keith Meza. 62 James Rutter. 64 Jay Perdue, 65 Sean Cummings, 66 Pierce Neal, 67 Herbert Jones, 68 Tim Pritchard, 69 Kirk Dunn. 70 Kevin Whipp, 71 William Clark. 72 Edward McCoy, 73 Danny Williams, 74 Rhett Stephens, 75 David Kramer. 76 Ricky Hilburn, 77 Joel Stanback, 78 Kirk Woods, 79 Curtis Spell, 81 David Millard, 82 Percy Eley, 83 Marccllus Dobson, 84 Brett Andrews. 87 Stanley Hairston, 88 Anthony Hill, 86 Robert Jefferson , 89 William Blake, 90 Raymond Ryals, 91 Eduardo Melton, 93 Charles Burgess. Basketball There are many things that have to fall into place to have a top quality athletic program. Those things fell into place this year for Chowan ' s Mens Basketball Team. A five point loss in February was the only blemish on the team ' s conference record. At that time in the season, the Braves were nearing the twenty win mark and were ranked nationally. Coach Bob Burke ' s Braves were listed in the top twenty rankings for ten weeks. At one time they were as high as twelfth. The season ended with a record of twenty-four and four. The four losses were to Southeastern, Newport News Apprentice, Louisburg. and Anderson. Another banner will go up over center court at the Helms Center. It will proclaim Chowan ' s Braves as the 1 882-83 regular season champions of the Eastern Tarheel Conference. Women ' s Basketball The 1982-83 Lady Braves did not win twenty games on the hardwood. Th ey did not bring banners back to Helms Center. They were not nationally ranked during the season. But they did not quit! They never gave up! The twelve and ten season wasn ' t what the players and Coach Gay Scott anticipated when it began. Their season could be called the season without breaks. When things started to go bad, it seemed as if the Lady Braves got more than their share. They did not quit! They never gave up! The sophmores gave a lot of leadership that will carry over to next season. At that time, four returnees will form the nucleus for a strong team. Gone will be All Division performers like Antia Anderson and Mary Weiss and others. The returnees will have their work cut out for them. They won ' t quit. They won ' t give up. One has to be the inexperience of the squad, the other being the injuries to key people during the season. But Coach Colin Steele ' s grappler.s didn ' t let those two things stop them from giving their best every time they took to the mats. Their eight and eight season was a bench mark when Chowan wrestling fans thought about the adversities the team overcame during the year. There were bright spots along the way. Brain Lloyd, Mike Thomas, and Bob Pearce took honors in the regional tournament in their respective weight classes. Mike Thomas closed out his excellent two-year career at Chowan with a fifty-win season along with another All-american Team selection in the 167-pound weight class. He will be a member of thejunior Pan- American Team this summer, which will compete in Venezuela. Among his merits are his first place ranking in the Mid-Atlantic District Tournament, second place finish at the National Tounament for [r. Colleges at Pembroke State, and furthermore, his election to represent the United States in the Pan-American .games to be held in Venezuela. Mike has proven that excellence is attained by those who strive for Congratulations! Volleyball Going into the season, we felt that we had the potential to win it all. Those were the thoughts of the Chowan women ' s volleyball team when they started play last Fall. What they accomplished turned out to be the best season record in the school ' s history and . ' ven a national ranking of ninth best in the country. Their twenty-eight and fourteen season took them to a second place finish in the regional tournament. Chowan ' s women put it all on the line in the rugged tournament where they played volleyball for ten straight hours except for time-outs and lunch breaks. Said one player after it was all over, ' We just ran out of gas, but everyone knows now that Chowan has got a top volleyball program. As Coach Janet Collins looks ahead to her twentieth season in the Fall. Chowan volleyball fans know the future looks bright. Those words were might and can. It would be a rebuilding year for sure, following the graduation of fourteen players from last year ' s squad. Also, last year ' s record of eleven wins and twenty-one losses was something that players and coaches alike wanted to forget . That is where those two words enter Coach Jerry Hawkins ' s thinking. The eight returning players might just provide the leadership that would be needed for what would be a young club. The incoming freshmen might show the way for the sophomores. All areas of play would need hard work if the 1983 edition of Brave baseball were to host a winning season. The other word was can. Can they do it? The answer is simple for those people who support the Braves. ' Yes! Braves can do it! First row; Montgomery Carter, Tim Davis. Taderal Dukes. Darryl Bryant. Gene Frazier.Ottie J. Softball As Coach Gay Scott ' s Softball team started play this Spring, injuries were on the mind of everyone on the team. It was not a question of one getting hurt. It seemed that when one got hurt, there were two or three more hobbled by injuries. Last year ' s squad finished up the season with a twenty-one and seven mark. This year ' s team has the potential to better that mark. They can be one of the front runners or lead the conference when tournament plays is held at Louisburg This year ' s squad is anchored by six sophomores who provide a lot of leadership. The key to a sucessful season may hinge with the nine freshmen players. As Chowanoka goes to press, the injuries are hopefully a thing of the past. Rick Coulson Sophomore golf team members Freshmen golf team members When any athletic team graduates three-fourths of a squad, then the next year ' s team has their work cut out for them. Such is the case for the 1983 Chowan golf team. Last year ' s team compiled a five and seven record along with a second place finish in the conference. Coach Bill Sowell ' s linksmen have the potential this year to be tme of the top teams in the conference. For that to happen, freshmen members of the squad will have to mature and rapidiv gain experience. That ex perience will show when the team enters conference match play. Chowan golfers pitted their talents against twelve demanding courses this year in head to head competi- tion with two-year and four-year schools. In addition to the matches in the Spring, team members took part in three tournaments last Fall. Scores: Volleyball Football Record: W6 L3-T1 Opp. 7 ECUJV 7 7 Newport News App. 21 36 Ft. ' Clubs and Organizations; SGA As did the SGA in previous years, this years Student Government got off to a slow start, due to a late spring elec- tion of executive officers. This was quickly remedied through many tough hours of brainwork during the summer, when all of the officers gathered to discuss the upcoming year. During these summer sessions, first class movies were ordered and tentative dates were discussed for special events. The SGA, composed of Executive and Legislative members, is the link between the students and the administration and at every meeting, this was stressed and never forgotten. In the course of the year. SGA sponsored events which included movies, dances, and a magic act. Homecoming, which is an annual event sponsored by SGA. was a great success. A highlight of the weekend included a parade featuring antique automobiles, dorm and organizational entries, a couple of bands, and members of the Homecoming Court. The evening ' s festivities were concluded with a bonfire and pep rally. Many organizations benefited from our Student Government by receiving money for educational trips, new uniforms, and equipment. Another highlight of the year was Spring Festival, which is a favorite activity of students, faculty, and parents. This year ' s week long festival was noexception.with the U.S. Navy Stage Band from Annapolis providing a concert, two East Coast bands funishing music for dances, and the Campus Carnival, which was better than ever, with music provided by disc jockey Bruce Dowdy, from K-94 radio. A campus wide talent show and a piz- za partv added to the week ' s fun. In looking back through the past year. 1 believe the SGA had a productive and eventful year. Much of the credit for a successful year goes to the leadership of the Executive Committee and to the hard work and dedication of our two sponsors: Sylvia Nicks and Dr. John Davis. Chowan College sponsored an arts magazine. Under the direction of Dr. Allen Pridgen and a staff of interested students, the Myriad encouraged creative student writers, photographers, and artists to submit their works, with the editorial board of the magazine choosing the best for publication. The completed magazine, showcasing poetry, photographs, and other artworks, was distributed to the college community at the Spring Festival. Myriad was chosen for the name of the magazine because its de- finition was appropriate for the range of art that the student editors wanted to represent: Webster says of Myriad that it is a great number of persons or things and of a highly varied nature thus suggesting the infinite variety and possibilities of the world of art.
