' Archives The Chowanoka C. ,y CmmH COLLEGE CHOWAN COLLEGE Murfreesboro, North Carolina 1980-1981 Volume XXXVIII Chowanoka Dedication It is quite appropriate that the 1980-81 Chowanoka be dedicated to a woman who has shown so much dedication to this college during the years of her employment. She carried out the respon- sibihties of her position most successfully. In doing so, she won the love, admiration and respect of those around her. This remarkable lady is Mrs. Marcella Coburn, former head resident of Belk Dorm. Mrs. Coburn ' s approach to life is a prime example of the Christian principles for which Chowan College stands. She revealed her Christian nature in the way she handled her job and herself. She displayed tact and good judgment in correcting any problems which occurred in the dorm. She is kind, understanding and a pleasant person to be around. Mrs. Coburn is well loved by all the girls in her dorm. She became their Mother away from home. She was the person the girls knew they could rely on. Also, many of the guys developed a close personal relationship with her The students of Chowan College wish to convey to Mrs. Coburn the knowledge that the dedica- tion of this yearbook is but a token of their appreciation for the services she rendered to them in the past years. PEOPLE CENTERED has come to be the term most frequently used to describe Chowan College because it is broad enough to include by inference an interest in the total development of people, especially students, inside and out- side the classroom. With 93 percent of the students living on campus, members of the college community (students, faculty and staff) have developed an environment for living and learning which makes Chowan, the PEOPLE CENTERED college, distinctive among two-year institu- tions. PEOPLE CENTERED is the basic concept from which the philosophy of Chowan has evolved and been promoted since 1848 when the institution was founded. Chowan continues to demonstrate the PEOPLE CENTERED view of education by; (1) employing faculty and staff who are interested in helping students gain a sound education in academic disciplines and a philosophy of life based upon time-honored Judeo-Christian values which have helped people live secure and self-confident lives in a democracy; (2) offering quality classroom instruction in standard curricula for students who plan to transfer after earning the associate degree to senior institutions where requirements for the baccalaureate degree will be completed; (3) providing career instruction on a liberal arts foundation for students who plan to enter the world of work after earning the one-year diploma or the associate degree; and (4) striving to meet the in- dividual needs of students through academic, social, and spiritual counseling. PEOPLE CENTERED means people, especially students, are at the center of concerns whether in the classroom, in the residence hall, in Squirrel Park, in the library, or in an athletic or social event. It means faculty and staff members are working to help students take charge of their lives by establishing personal goals, both short range and long range, and becoming the best people they can be, academically, socially, and spiritually. Ron Thompson and Larry Lassiter do a great job of planning the meals, and running the cafeteria. Although there is a lot of criticism about the food. Chowan students have little reason to complain. In comparison with other colleges throughout the state. Chowan ' s food ranks among the best. The cafeteria planned several surprises during the year: allyou-can-eat ice cream . steaks and Sunday night buffet. 39 Munchette As a social center on campus, the Munchette is a place for students to gather, a place to read mail, and a place to grab a quick bite to eat. Students meet here between classes to discuss class lectures, gossip and just to sit and relax. After assembly on Monday ' s and Wednesday ' s the snack bar becomes verv crowded as students pile from Columns through the mail room to the Munchette. 40 Bookstore Akli-in (;.Ufvvciocl, Bookstore Manager. It is virtually impossible for any Chowan College student to escape going to the Bookstore while he or she is at Chowan. The long lines outside the first week or two of each semester provide the perfect opportunity for meeting other students. Once in the Bookstore, after putting all personal belongings on the shelves at the door, one can easily find textbooks and other class supplies with the help of Mrs. Aldeen Gatewood, the manager. The Bookstore has much more to offer than class essentials though. There is a wide assortment of T-shirts and jackets bearing the Chowan College emblem, and not to mention toiletries, the latest posters, unique gifts and stationary to write the folks. 41 Student The Lakeside Student Center neared completion as the building and grounds crew prepared the finishing touches for our new recreation area while the Chowanoka was going to press. Final coats of paint and new equiptments were being ordered so that the building would be ready for its Grand Opening ' during Spring Festival week. An open house and reception were planned for April 23. Several promotions and activities were planned in honor of the new center to take place during Spring Festival Week. The Lakeside Student Center will have several drawing cards which should invite students to visit often. The new center will house the Post Office in an effort to provide a convenient location for students to receive mail. A game area as well as a game room will include pool tables, ping pong tables, pinball machines, and new electronic games. New offices will be used by Student Development staff and the SGA. which will join together in an effort to better plan student activities. A television viewing room should provide daily entertainment for those Soap Opera Sally ' s ' . as well as the Monday Night Footballers ' . The main floor should be used for dances and social events alike. Lastly, the center center will have a balcony which will serve as a quiet place to study or to view activities below. Linda Owens Direc tor of Campus Programming 42 Center For many years the Askew Student Union offered Chowan students a place to gather and associate with one another, as well as offering many types of recreation. However, over the past few years it has proven to be inadequate to the needs of the students. The new student union Lakeside Student Center - will offer the students more recreational opportunities and a better atmosphere for students to meet and converse. Collin Steele Counselor for Group Functions 43 Social Services Special Services is an organization created to help students learn study and note-taking skills as well as other helpful skills. The counselors are available to guide students with personal and group counseling and operate a special study skills class weekly in which they help students make the most of their study time. In the Career Development Center, there are numerous resources including catalogues and applications from schools across the nation, job prospect information, and career fdes arranged according to alphabet, personality, and special interests. The counselors coordinate the Student Handbook and through their efforts, in cooperations with Linda Owens, Director of Programming, orientation is planned and accomplished. For whatever need a student has in the Career Development Center, he is sure to find an atmosphere where people are concerned with people. 45 Garnet Moore, secretary Diane Wood Linda Owens 46 Cherrie Kassem - LOVEJOyS COIJJEGE CMIBI 47 Library Staff Katherine Wood 48 The Whitaker Library provides a good place for students to catch up with the news going on throughout the world. It is also a place where students may go to escape the noises of dorm life. The staff at the library will assist students when they have any trouble locating books, resources, and other material. The many volumes at the library provide for a well-rounded selection of educational and recreational reading materials. 49 Penny Penny Infirmary is open any time of day or night to students needing medical treatment. Nurses Sarah Wright and Marie Elhott are always available to attend to students ' minor medical needs and also to more serious problems that require stay in the infirmary. The nurses are also available to advise students on questions concerning health and hygiene. 50 Infirmary Marie Elliott 51 Maintenance Tereasa Hill and Linda Hassell help Charles Davis. 52 and Housing There are many people behind the scenes here at Chowan that help to keep things running smoothly. One group of these people are those found in the Maintenance and Housing Department. The Housing Department, under the direction of Bennie T. Vann, is responsible for student room assignments. The Department of Buildings and Grounds keeps campus buildings in functioning order. Superintendent Jack Hassell supervises maintenance of the dormitories as well as other campus structures, while Steve Davenport heads the custodial branch of the department. 53 Jesse Helms Center The Jesse Helms Center was completed in August, 1980. Financed completely through contributions, the Helms Center has proved to be a rewarding addition to the college. Senator Helm ' s signing autographs for Chowan students. 55 Memo From President I have just recurned to the office following goodbyes to the senators at the Tri-County Airport. My heart is filled ot overflowing with joy and gratitude incident to the activities of the day. Everything went so well. It could not have gone better, as a matter of fact, in my judgment. The senators, to include Senator Helms ' family, were over-joyed, especially with the favorable response of our students. I have never been prouder of our students on any occasion any year than I was today. The dedication of the physical education center today was the culmination of four years of work, to include a successful Mission Possible campaign effort. Many, many people worked and gave and helped, both within the college community and outside of it. No money we received meant more to me than that pledged by the faculty-staff of the college. The dedication ceremonies-experience today was the icing on the cake. There are so many people who deserve to be thanked for contributions leading up to today. I am thinking of the Committee which visited a number of colleges to get ideas for the layout of our gym. There were many persons who helped plan and implement a successful campaign. There was the ad hoc committee which planned the program activities of the day. to include the preparation and printing of the program. There were a thousand details to be thought up and implemented. There was the service by the Hospitality Committee throughout the weekend. There was good food service. There were the many, many long hot hours of work, much of it in the last few days, by the Department of Maintenance. There was the effort on the part of ushers and others to get people into the gymnasium and settled, to include the many visitors, faculty-staff, and students. There were the well-thought-out presentations by those who participated in the formal program. There was the appropriate response participation of our students. It took all of these groups ' efforts and more to bring us to the culmination day 1 express genuine ap- preciation and sincere gratitude to the entire membership of the Chowan College Family. These sentiments I express both personally and professionally. We made many friends today. The public caught a glimpse of the basic good side of the college. Good will accrue to the college with respect to referenced four-year effort which culminated today, across many, many years to come. Again, my gratitude and appreciation goes to everyone. The residents, which are mostly freshmen, were slightly disappointed in the dorm upon their arrival in the fall. But as the semester con- tinued, a family atmosphere developed and despite the physical handicaps of the dorm, the residents were all pleased that they did not have to move from Columns at the end of the semester. Columns sponsored weekend events such as dances in Daniel Hall, bake sales, hot dog sales and a night at the movies in Ahoskie. Their most successful weekend activity was a dance contest held at Murfreesboro Middle School Gym featuring music by Legend as well as a DJ. Proceeds from this event helped a needy family have a merrier Christmas. Columns was also active in intramural sports. At the end of the fall semester. A good cooperative spirit in dealing with building conditions and red tape helped build a family at- mosphere in the dorm. Mixon did well in intramurals as well as academics, but the social program was the strong point. The number one program was a pig pickin ' held at the Colony House in October. Chowan surpassed its 200-pint goal by 35 pints of blood. This was termed a tremendous show of community spirit and caring on the part of the community by Miss Owens. Circle K, Womens Club of Murfreesboro and the student volunteers helped in making the program a success. This was one fo the largest single collections of blood in Hertford County in the last five years, missing last year ' s total of 285 pints by 50 pints. Miss Owens praised the student body for its efforts in the Bloodmobile 1 am proud of the fact that the Chowan students cared for a project and not for the assembly and class cut credits which they received. 80 Intramurals Colin Steele, the new director of intramurals. In the course of all events, there is one that Miss Shigeko Wakiyama will never forget. That memorable event was when she was crowned Hoinecoming Queen in Chowan ' s football stadium. She was escorted by Mike Arai. Miss Wendy Strickland was crowned Princess for 1980. She was escorted by Chris Cresswell. 84 Homecoming Dance The Homecoming dance, honoring the Queen and Princess, featured the band Threshold . Many students, facuhy and staff members were present to enjoy the occassion. Anything Goes Anything Goes is a dorm -sponsored activity for all students of Chowan. It helps to break up the monotony of every day campus life. Such things as turtle races, softball and baseball throws, tobacco spitting contests are offered, as well as musical en- tertainment. A new addition this year is the Earth which many students enjoyed pushing around Squirrel Park. 86 Dance 87 c o m m u n i t y c o n c e r t The Community Concert Series offers a variety of programs throughout the year at Chowan. Founder ' s Day is a Chowan tradition stretching back many years, a celebration of the founding of the college. Held in October of each year, Founder ' s Day honors those who founded the college as well as those first female students who were here that historic day, October 1 1 , 1848, when the Chowan Female Institute was formally opened. During the Founder ' s Day celebration in 1980, Sara Ann Hobbs addressed the student body. She is the director of the Division of Missions for the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. It is doubtful that few of those present at the founding of Chowan 133 years ago could have imagined the success Chowan College and those who attended it would achieve in the years to come. 97 f. When The Chowan Ex perience. a student-made movie production which pokes fun at campus life her e in historic Mur- freesboro, is finished, sometime, there will be no doubt in your mind that college is anything but safe. It was hoped that the film, which is about 60 percent com- plete, would be ready for its unveiling at Spring Festival during the second semester, according to the movie ' s director and executive producer. Rhett Coates. The motion picture could never be interpreted as anything but a true comedy spoof. After all. any movie which features scenes such as a shark attack in Lake Vann. a chemistry lab explosion in Camp Hall, cafeteria activities (complete with gross food), a wild panty raid, and the ultimate scene: the entire campus being destroyed in an earth quake; a movie like that could not be considered a com- pelling drama. What we do. says director Coates. is to take complaints from Chowan students and exag- gerate them to the extreme. We re taking another approach to look ing at things here. Observes Coates. By looking at our complaints comically, maybe there ' s something we can do about them. It ' s all very positive. Coates claims his principal cast numbers in excess of 200 throughout the production, with two people. Aubrey Cuthrell and Diane Hassel. starring and in troducing each scene in the movie. The pace and action in the 45-60 minute movie (the exact length is still undetermined) will build until the tragic, but com ical. earthquake sequence destrovs all. Although some school officials have been concerned that Coates is making fun of the college in a derogatory way. Coates defends his film as being nothing more than light-hearted comedy that is for and about the student. After all. ' he says. It s people who make up a college, not buildings. The crew and actors of The Chowan Experience take time out to relax and po picture. Director. Atkinson of Dinwiddi president of the Student Go ' Association here at Chowan, The blue-eyed blonde was elected by the campus student body last March, when she defeated Steve Laney of Charlotte by a decisive margin. Atkinson, who is the first female student body president since the 1974 75 year, was a Deans List student last year, majoring in Pre Engineering. She is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa s Iota Delta chapter, a national junior college scholastic honor fraternity The executive said last spring that she would strive to serve this year ' s student body without any conflict of interest. She went on to say she would represent and inform the students of the SGAs various activities and explore the possibility of revising, if needed, the current SGA Constitution (last year ' s legislature revised this year ' s version). Last year ' s election, according to then SGA president Mike Burke, was dominated by Atkinson supported women. The schools females turned out in large numbers to offset Laney ' s large percentage of the black vote. Burke said the voter-turnout was probably the largest in Chowan ' s history. He said 500 students voted, compared to approximately 300 in the 1979 when he sought the head job. The increase in the black turnout was a big factor in the results of the election. Darlene J Keene of Ahoskie was one of two blacks elected, Keene defeated Jefferey D Prillaman of Greensboro in the vice presidential race, after delivering an inspiring and sincere speech to fellow Chowanians. Keene noted that she was new to the political scene, but offered that all great politicians had Ann W Kellam of Onley. Va., Diane LaBreux of Virginia Beach and Kathy DeHart of Stoneville all ran unopposed. Kellam will hold down the office of secretarv, LaBreau treasurer and DeHart will handle the historian Freddie Davis of Morganton was appointed by Burke to fdl the office of auditor Legislature The SGA legislature consists of students representing the various dormitory floors on campus. One student is selected from each hall to act as a representative of all its residents, generally reflecting the opinions and feelings of his constituents. The primary objective, inevitably, is to provide entertainment for the campus community. Money allocated from the business office serves as the funds for movies, dances, trips. Parent ' s Day. Homecoming and Spring Festival. The SGA also gives loans to clubs and organizations in an effort that ihey mav grow and de elop into strong representatives of the school t Half of SGA Funds Spent In First Month of Term BvGREGBASSETT One month into the new school year, the Student Government Association has spent approximately half of its first semester budget According to figures released at the SGA s regular Monday session on September 10, the student organization has $6,741 left of the S12.000 for the entire year and divided it between semester, SGA Treasurer Diane LeBreux noted that last years SGA left a debt of S624.63. thus making the 1980-81 SGA begin the semester withSll.375.37. A breakdown of SGA spending shows that the group has spent SI. 010. 13 in weekly movies. SI. 075 on special events such as Martha, the Frisbee Dog and the magic show, and S325 on the band Kick The SGA also spent SI ,500 for ■Threshold. the band that was obtained to perform for Homecoming. However, other Homecoming expenses including the cost of the film Animal House have not been deducted from the S6,700 balance figure. President Sharee Atkinson estimated at the meeting that nearly S3. 000 would he spent on Homecoming alone. Rescue. Fire Plea After citing the many ways they pro ide service to Chowan students. Chet Hill of the Murfreesboro Rescue Service and Charles Watson of the Murfreesboro Fire Department asked the SGA to consider giving S250 to each of their respective organizations. The two outlined their ser ' ices to the college and the community, noting that they stand by at all football games, help coordinate and conduct campus fire drills, teach first aid and provide free ambulance service. Watson said the fire department would need S15,000 to operate in the upcoming year He added that the S500 gift to the two depart ments would have special meaning, having come from the Chowan students themselves. We could have gone to Ben Sutton. Watson said refering to the college s business manager. But we ' re coming here to ask vou. Wa vho Cho director of development as well as being volunteer fireman, asked the student body t keep us rolling and keep us ready. SGA vice president Darlene Keen suggested that the student association organiz a drive to raise money for the departments but Parker Halls Dorm Council president. Jeff Pishner. recommended the measure be tabled and discussed at a later date. Miss Atkinson agreed the gift question should be tabled, saying it is something she would like to che ck into first The money really should come from somewhere else. said the president. I think there is another fund it could begotten from. Festn-al Funding Asked Joe Mayes, a student representing college band director Bob Brown, asked the SGA to sponsor Chowan ' s annual band festival. In past years the SGA has not funded the event, but this year it was recommended the SGA sponsor it. Mayes said the total cost for the day-long event would be SI, 200. but a private source has provided S800. leaving a S400 gap to be filled. Maves noted that the event has filled the football stadium with both local townspeople and college students in past years. He also stressed that the band festival is put on by the college itself and not the music department. Mayes hinted that the November 8 festival could be canceled if the SGA money was not 166 Additional Open Dorms To Be Sought by SGA By GREG BASSE 11 Chowan ' s Student Government Association is considering a move that would push for open dorms on a regular and more frequent basis in the campus seven resident halls. The effort to push for open dorms was discussed at the body ' s regular meeting November 10. and was brought up by SGA President Sharee Atkinson. Miss Atkinson said she would like to see dormitories open to both sexes every Thursday night, but conceded that the specific arrangements would have to be worked out before the idea could be submitted to the administration. Two years ago the 1978-79 SGA received approval for an open dorm policy that allowed visitation each Thursday, but the visitation soon got out of hand and was short-lived Finally, college President Bruce E, Whitaker took away regular open dorm privileges. Then last year the 1979-80 SGA. under the direction of Mike Burke, proposed a similar open dorm policy which the administration immediately rejected. This is going to take a lot of planning, Miss Atkinson told the student body Hopefully, nobody is going to get caught and screw it up for us. she said, if the dorm policy can be approved SGA Representative and Parker Hall Assistant Head Resident. Bennie Bridgewater, noted that the open dorm policy failed two years ago because both male and female dorms RA ' s were not very happy about it because they couldn ' t go to the other dorms, said Bridgewater. they were stuck watching the He suggested that some sort of alternate arrangement should be tried so that female dorms would be open one week and male dorms the next. Mlss Atkinson said the SGA would have to get together with all of the dorms ' head residents and RA ' s and try to draft a letter to Thanksgiving, We have to have enough people behind us in order to get it approved. Miss Atkinson said, Canot ' Repair Stnight George Welch, a member of the schools ' Outing Club, approached the SGA for the second time November 10 to ask that the student body do something to replace or repair the school ' s three canoes which he said were in desperate shape Welch said the canoes and paddles are practically useless because they cant be taken off campus by the students Miss Atkinson suggested that Welch get some prices on new canoes and make a presentation at the next meeting Welch said a ■decent canoe would probably cost about $400 and agreed to bring details to a later meeting. Attendance a Problem Poor attendance at recent SGA meetings has become a bit of a problem for the body. Less than half of the body ' s members at- tended the November 1 meeting. At a special meeting held on November 17. so few people attended that the body could not vote on any Candidate Lack Postpones SGA Elections By LYNE 1 IE FARRELL The Student Government Association elections, originally scheduled for March 18. have been postponed until a date to be set later. SGA President Sharee Atkinson said the action was taken because only one candidate signified intention of running for office. Stressing the importance of having a functioning student governing body. Atkinson asked students Do you want to lose your privilege to select campus activities and the right to voice the opinion of the student body. Think about it! ' SGA. she pointed out, gives representation to the students and provides an opporluniiy to Currently. SGA has presented a proposal for campus wide weekend visitation, a concert is p lanned for Spring Festival and West Dorm is planning a trip to Busch Gardens with the aid of SGA funds. Without a functioning SGA, Atkinson maintains, these could not be accomplished. Offices for which candidates are sought are audit rpen for ■tary. and At the Student Government Associatin Legislative meeting held on February 5 the Treasurers Report revealed $12,390,26 in the SGA budget 1 wo deducatins will be taken from the budget ' s amount of money. $3,600 will go towards the cost of the movies and $1,000 will go towards different clubs. There will be $2,500 alloted for expenses before paying for the band at the Spring Festival Concert These expenses include the cost of public facilities, sound and lights, three extra security officers, tickets, and publicity. Music will be supplied by Nantucket. Tickets will cost $4 for students a nd $6 for A motion by Mark Douglas to give the Bravettes $200 if they leave their pompoms at the college and help with the concert was passed, Freddie Davis ' motion to give the soccer team $200 if they help work at the concert also was passed Don Robertson asked for $200 to help the baseball team with the printing cost of their programs, A motion by Lynn Creech to give this sum to the team in return for help with the concert was passed 167 Competitive Honors i New: Renee Currie. Holland of Murfreesboro on July 5, 1949. just two years after the college re-opened from being closed during World War II. The negatives were found earlier this year by Mrs. Holland, who donated them to the Murfreesboro Historical Association. They are reproduced here with the permission of Mrs. Holland and the local historical group. Another view of McDowell Columns as it appeared in 1949 with a better view of the East Wing. This portion of the building was removed in the mid- 1960s. Prior to the construction of Whitaker Library, the East Wing housed the library in addition to a cafeteria and classrooms. This photograph was made from in front of McDowell Columns and depicts the roadway which approached the building. The area is now- used as a parking lot and the three residence halls for men. A shot from what is now center campus shows the old President ' s Home which stood in an area now occupied by Robert Marks Hall. Also noted in the photograph is one of the rose arbors. 246 Historical McDowell Columns is shown as it ap- peared in 1949. On the left, the old ivy-covered East Wing may be viewed along with one of the cottages and the bell tower. The Columns building was then painted blue and white. Pine Walk as it appeared in 1949. This photograph was made in the area of the present President ' s Home . Many of the pine trees remain to line the paved walkway. 247 1980-81 Student Directory Sophomores A Abdah.
