Even in this short span of time, he has gained the high respect and esteem of his students for dedica- tion to the teaching profession, and for his deep concern and genuine in- terest for his students. In addition to his many duties and responsibilities in the photography classrooms and laboratories, he has unselfishly given countless hours in his role as academic advisor to this publication. Our token of appreciation is small and inadequate; however, we, the yearbook staff of 1980, do gratefully and affectionately dedicate this volume of THE CHOWANOKA to our friend and professor . . . Commencement Marshals Pamela Cross, Co-Chief Rochel Roland, Co-Chief Cynthia Gray Karen Hopwood Mitchell White WE ' RE SOMETHING SPECIAL! During the 1970 ' s, Chowan College experienced a decade of change, evaluation, and continued progress. The early years brought a dramatic increase in the enrollment, which soared to a high of almost 1,500 students. This growth had been made possible by the opening of a new men ' s dormitory during the decade. The new $1.3 million science-engineering facility was opened in January, 1973. The new $2.5 million gymnasium- physical education center was nearing completion in December, 1979. Also, during the ' 70s, extensive repair and renovation work was done to McDowell Columns. Two interior walls were replaced and the chapel-auditorium was completely renovated. During the 1972-73 academic year, Chowan faced a new challenge brought on by a sharp enrollment decline and ris- ing costs. The reduced enrollment to approximately 985 had been anticipated by the administration and Board of Trustees. The college responded by seeking ways to tighten its belt without sacrificing the quality of its academic pro- gram. Chowan also embarked on a period of evaluation and study. The college emerged with new programs and emphases, geared to broaden its service to students. As a result of a study of the interests and needs of its students, a number of career education programs were initiated during the ' 70s to complement Chowan ' s traditional emphasis in liberal arts. These include photography, newswriting and advertising, comercial art, and merchandising management. All have proved popular with students. Additional services and personnel were provided through the Department of Student Development in the areas of guidance and counseling and residence hall living. More attention was given to helping provide students with finan- cial aid. The college reaffirmed its heritage as a Baptist college devoted to helping the individual student realize his poten- tial through mental, physical and spiritual growth. With the change of status of Wingate College to a four-year school, Chowan was left as the only two-year college sponsored by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. This has proved to be a plus for the college. Campus evaluation was accelerated by the participation of the college in the institutional self-study during the 1977-78 calendar years. This led to Chowan receiving reaffirmation of its accreditation. Chowan has been strenghtened by this period of study and innovation. Since the mid-seventies, the enrollment has stabilized in the area of 1,000-1,100 students. Another cause of optimism as Chowan enters the ' 80 is the level of financial support the college enjoyed during the past decade. The Annual Giving Fund goal has been met each year since the program was launched in 1974. The amount received has increased from $50,000 the first year to over $65,000 during 1978-79. The success of the Annual Giving Fund Program has helped Chowan to continue to operate in the black, something the college has done for the past 22 years. Chowan alumni have increased their support. A Parents Association has been formed and is providing support. The $2.5 million Chowan received in pledges and gifts for its new gymnasium doubled its previous largest campaign to construct the new science-engineering facility. Chowan is now emphasizing its general endowment program. Endowment has reached $2 million and the college has announced a goal of $5 million within three years and a goal of $50 million within a generation. During the ' 70s, Chowan ' s athletic teams brought acclaim to the college. Among the more notable achievements are the basketball team winning two straight regular season conference championships and placing second in the regional meet in 1979; the football team compiling a record of nine winning seasons and sending scores of players, including a number of all- Americans, to senior colleges; and the baseball team compiling an enviable won-loss record. The women ' s varsity program has also been strengthened. The 1979 volleyball team placed second in the regional tournament, its highest finish ever. The 1979-80 women ' s basketball team compiled one of the school ' s best records ever. During the past decade, Chowan became known, more than ever before, as the area ' s cultural and fine arts center. The art program was begun within the Fine Arts Department and the Chowan Art Gallery opened. Many attractions in dance, music and drama have been presented to the enjoyment of the campus and the larger community. In its growth to a place of prominence as one of the nation ' s finest private, two-year colleges, Chowan has been helped by many different people. Among the forefront of the volunteer leaders and workers have been the members of the board of Trustees and Board of Advisors. The student body and alumni have played an important role in Chowan ' s progress and in molding the college into what it is today. The closeness of the faculty and staff and their mutual respect and appreciation for each other is a strength from which will spring even greater success and progress during the 1980s. —President Bruce E. Whitaker A Little Unusual... DR. WHITAKER Although a college president is expected to have everything under control at all times, the family dog, Trixie, ' frequently gets out of line. On one oc- casion, the faculty and student alike enjoyed wat- ching my reaction in chapel when I was making a very important address to the Chowan community. I noticed that low-down dog in the back of the auditorium after I had started to speak. She heard and recognized my voice, so she started trotting down (at that time) the middle aisle. When she reached the front of the auditorium, she looked up. sniffed and dashed up the steps to the stage and started gleefully jumping up and down on my leg, wagging her tail and yapping! By the time Dean Lowe picked her up and took her away, Trixie was so scared by the wild applause that she had her tail bet- ween her legs. I guess that goes to show that even college presidents have skeletons in their closets! PHILROYCE I guess the thing that stands out most in my mind as being memorable in relation to my job oc- curred in the field of sports. In 1970, Chowan entered its annual football game with Ferrum, our arch-rival, possessing a 6-0 record. It was a tremen- dously hard fought football game, but Chowan emerged victorious when our halfback broke loose on a 50-yard touchdown run. This kept us undefeated and advanced us in the national rank- ings. DEAN WINSLOW My most interesting incident contains a very subtle type of humor. Several years ago, the Iranian students held a sit-in around the pine trees and boycotted classes because they felt I was treating them unfairly. In fact, they even hung me in effigy in front of the Columns Building. Dr. Whitaker finally broke up the rally. MR. NICHOLSON We had a student one year come in for an excuse because of a death in her immediate family. When I asked her who died, she paused and said, ' my grand- mother. ' She had missed a critical test and wrote a note and signed her mother ' s name on the note — it looked fishy to me. I had to call her home to verify her excuse. When I asked her mother who had died, she said, ' Was it her aunt? ' I said, ' You ' re not even close. She said it was her grandmother. ' Her mother then answered. ' Oh, that ' s right. It was her grandmother. DEAN LEWIS It was a spring evening, after mid- night, with a beautiful full moon when I heard about some disturbance on campus. At that time the Dean of Men and I went over to investigate. While we were in- vestigating that incident in a residence hall, we kept hearing some kind of strange noise. We couldn ' t tell whether it was a student in trouble or what, but we did determine that the sounds were com- ing from the lake area. The Dean of Men walked down the walkway toward Parker Hall and the security man and I drove down. When we got there, it was apparent the noise was coming from the lake. As we arrived at the spillway, we saw two guys in an old pontoon boat on the lake singing Joy to the World. They paddl- ed the boat right up to shore as they hadn ' t discovered we were there yet. The Dean of Men called them by name and asked them what they were doing out on the lake. They replied that they had been drinking and had discovered they were too drunk to go back into the residence hall. At the time they were only concern- ed with not bringing undue notice to themselves. 10 CHAPLAIN TAYLOR DEAN LOWE The unusual is usual for the office of the Dean of the College. Two examples follow. The first of these occurred while I was in the office of the Dean; the second occurred during the time of my predecessor: 1. A student came in to see me. He appeared upset, claiming that he needed to go home for several days due to the death of his uncle, who was his legal guardian. While the student was sitting in my office talking with me, the telephone rang. The dead uncle, in very good health, was calling to check on his nephew. 2. A student had been making long distance calls on a pay phone and charging these to numbers that he picked at random from the telephone book. On one evening, he placed such a call and gave to the operator the number to be charged for the call. In picking a number from the telephone book, he had accidently picked the home phone number of the operator. The operator casually put the call through, and then called the police. The police picked up the student while he was still talking on the phone. Once a security guard on campus approached me with a question, ' You ' re the new chaplain, aren ' t you? ' ' Yes, ' I answered. ' You ' re a doc too, huh? ' ' Yes. ' ' Well, I ' ve got this sore on my elbow and . . . ' , replied the guard. ' I ' m sorry about that but that ' s not the kind of doctor that I am; I had to reply. DOUG GATEWOOD Doug Gatewood, working in admissions as a recruiter for the college, has had many experiences related to his position at Chowan. However, his most memorable involves not being recognized as an administrative member: It was my first year at Chowan, the fall semester of 1978. Most student worries were over and the first dance, the ' welcoming dance, ' was go- ing over well. When I arrived to help out with the dance, being a new face on campus, I was refused admission to the dance without proper identification. After much embarrassment, I was eventually allowed to enter. CLIFTON COLLINS In filling out the North Carolina Legislative Tuition Grant ap- plication, students are asked to give their residentiary ad- dress, which is where the student actually lives. Very often, students give their post off ice box as their address when they should have given their route number. Mr. Collins often wonders, How does a student live in a post office box? 11 other stuff... TWO CHOWAN TEACHERS NAMED OUTSTANDING NORMAN EDWARD WOOTEN DWIGHT G. COLLIER 12 Nations Represented At Chowan Chowan College has 1,124 students on campus representing 20 states, the District of Columbia and 12 foreign countries. Of the 1,124, 81 are International Students, representing the countries of Brazil, Columbia, Ghana, India, Iran, Japan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Liberia, Micronesia, Nigeria, and Thailand. According to Mr. Rowland Pruette advisor and personal counselor to these students, 38 of the 81 students are returning students, either from summer school or the fall term. The International Students are encouraged to participate in all the ac- tivities of the college, Prutte stated. He also mentioned that contacts are made through the area church groups. Chowan College also has 629 students from 20 other states, the District of Columbia, or from a U.S. Territory. They are Alabama, Con- necticut, Deleware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusettes, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Vermont. Virginia, and West Virginia. One student comes from Puerto Rico. 1 12 ADMINISTRATION Dr. Bruce E.Whitaker President of the College Dr. B. Franklin Lowe, Jr. Dean of the College R. The College Bookstore is the place. About four weeks a year, the College Bookstore is one of the most visited places in Murfressboro. The store is pack- ed at the begining of each semester as students line up to buy the seemingly hundreds of books needed for classes. The bookstore serves two purposes: first, it is a place where students can purchase needed school supplies; and se- cond, it provides students a place to buy toiletries and all the other essentials of dormatory life. Almost every type of clothing made is available and is mark- ed with a Chowan College emblem and on display. The store also has some of the best posters to be found in the area, as well as a collection of notebooks, drinking glasses, tennis balls, photographic supplies and various Chowan memorabilia. The bookstore also serves as a convienent stopping place when checking the mail, heading for the Munchette, or just passing by in between classes. A venture in town could often be avoided merely by making a quick stop at the College Bookstore. 42 Mrs. Gatewood is the well organized proprietor of the store. V ){Zs 43 ASKEW STUDENT UNION The Askew Student Center houses the student recreational facilities for Chowan Col- lege. Under the direction of Coach Steve Nelson, the center offers students a place to gather and associate with other students. It is often considered the focal point of enter- tainment at Chowan and is known as a comfortable place where students can meet in a casual, friendly atmosphere. Open daily from 1:00 pm to 11:00 pm, the Askew Student Center offers foose-ball, ping-pong, television viewing, a large assortment of magazines and a new addition this year — canoeing. 11 Jane Bridgeforth and Jonie Graham involved in a friendly game o f foose-ball. Unidentified student relaxes at the edge of the pool, (located across from the Student Center). 45 THE MUNCHETTE There are times in every semester when the average Chowan student can not stand anymore of the nutritious, but dull, cafeteria food. Limited on finances, the student heads for the Munchette, Chowan ' s snack bar where good food can be found at surprisingly low prices. Conviently located on campus, the Munchette is open until 11:00 p.m. nightly so that any case of the munchies can quickly be satisfied. A popular treat, the Braveburger, is a welcome alternative to the typical fast food burger found in town. A popular place to gather after the home sporting events, the Munchette is a great place to meet people as well as catch up on the local news while enjoy- ing some good conversation. Chowan ' s snack bar even has its very own television with a sectioned off area for quiet viewing. The television area has become a popular place for catching up on the soap opera scene in the day time or enjoying a sit-com at night. Always a good place to study bet- ween classes, the Munchette is the spot on campus to grab a bite or a quick drink. Hi The food is really good — especially the cheeseburgers — mmm, they ' re somethin ' special! 47 CAREER DEVELOPMENT pg__y« y ¥ Don ' t pass through college so fast that you loose track of which curriculum is best suited to your abilities. At the Career Development Center in Stone Hall, specially train- ed counselors are available to discuss educational, personal, social and career concerns as well as other matters related to individual development. Counselors Patricia Owens and Diane Wood, together with student aides, can help solve a variety of problems or dilem- mas that any Chowan student may face. The development center is full of interesting catalogues and brochures from schools all over the country that can help a student deter- mine which school is best suited for his occupational goals. The Career Development Center has many specialized programs that serve the students. Classes dealing with study skills, programs for human potential, and sessions about self-management are available to all students. They even have information that can help prepare for examina- tions, giving tips on how to study, and conquer the problem of nervousness. Our tireless counselors are Diane Wood and Linda Owens. 4S Counselor Diane Wood posts information on job opportunites. Kathy Fisher in the catalog section. A variety of information on almost every subject is available. (Above) Jeff Jewel and Tony Green read a pamphlet on the evils of alcohol. When you ' re at the Chowan College Cafeteria, you ' re at the right place. The cafeteria staff consists of talented, dedicated workers who always have new and interesting surprises for the students at Chowan. Although serving 1,000 people isn ' t easy, the cafeteria staff accepts the challenge three times per day. Just think how many hours go into the planning and preparation of one meal! The staff must really think the students at Chowan are something special. T,() Bob Laws enjoys a Chowan breakfast. - sa 1 N wmi] US Can I see your I.D.? Remember the lines? Although there was a lot of criticisim about the cafeteria food in 1979-80, Chowan students had little reason to complain. In comparison with other colleges throughout the state, Chowan ' s food ranked among the best. During second semester, students were given the opportunity to choose the menus, which satisfied many of the cafeteria dissidents. 51 PENNY INFIRMARY Penny Infirmary is a special building on the Chowan College campus. Built in 1964, it has played an important role in the lives of Chowan students. The modern well-equipped facility is open to any student seeking medical at- tention. Students can go to the infirmary day or night and receive treatment from the trained and skillful nurses on duty. The friendly nurses can help to remedy anything from a common cold to a sprained ankle. Students who may be too ill to attend classes, or those sick with a possibly contagious disease, can stay comfortably at the infirmary. Recuperation under the nurses ' care can be less painful. Students with questions concerning their health and hygiene can go the the infirmary for advice. Students can feel assured that they have a place to go in a time of need. 52 LEFT- Sarah G.Wright RIGHT- Marie Elliott 53 LIBRARY Whether to escape a noisy dorm room or to find an interesting novel to take their minds off their studies, many Chowan students find peace within the friendly confines of spacious Whitaker Library. The students work with the patient staff to locate, among other things, research materials, misplaced books, or a seemingly unavailable newspaper. The newspaper and periodical racks are perhaps the library ' s most popular features as both students and faculty seek news of local and personal interest. The card catalog and the copying machine are probably next in popularity. However, this in no way lessens the importance of the other parts of the facility. In short, Whitaker Library offers something for virtually everybody as most Chowanians have discovered. 54 55 HOUSING MAINTENANCE BKSH HH Ever wonder why you ' re in the room you ' re in? Ever lost your room key? Dropped your valuable engagement ring down a drain? If you ever have, you are probably familiar with the friendly people in the housing and maintenance department. Under the direction of Bennie T. Vann, the Housing Department is responsible for assigning students rooms and assuring their satisfaction. The department of buildings and grounds keeps campus buildings in working order. Superintendent Jack Hassell supervises maintenance of the dormitories as well as other campus structures, while Steve Davenport heads the custodial branch of the department. All work together to see that the students get a room that is in the best possible condition. Repairs of damaged property are also per- formed by the housing and maintenance department. They also register students ' refrigerators as well as distribute room keys. These people behind the scenes help to guarantee the smooth functioning of the domestic side of college life. 56 The people who keep us going stay busy. From repairing College vehicles to pain- ting signs, fixing windows and killing rodents — they are always available to help out. 57 SECURITY SECURITY A campus the size of Chowan needs top security twenty-four hours a day. The Security Department of Chowan College is always on the lookout for student ' s safety. Headed by Jack Britt, Security is composed of three full-time guards who are aided by eighteen part-time students. The issuing of parking tickets, party control, hall saftey and student relations are the dominant roles of security. It is the first gathering of the entire student population and an inspiring hour of encouragement from college leaders. During the Fall Convocation, which is presided over by Chaplin R. Its purpose is simple: ...to provide quality higher education and to help students gain a philosophy of life which will lead to their development into responsi- ble Christian leaders and citizens. Held in October of each year, Founder ' s Day honors those who found- ed the college as well as those first female students who were there that historic day, October 11, 1848, when the Chowan Female Institute was formally opened. During the Founder ' s Day celebration in 1979, College Chaplin R. Hargus Taylor addresses the assembled students about the importance of the Homecoming Tradition, and Anna Belle Crouch introduced the candidates for Homecoming Court. Pretty Gayle Boniface would be named Homecoming Queen for 1979 on Homecoming Day, thus joining a list of queens beginning in 1956 with Homecoming Queen Betty Ann Liverman. Smoke Signals editor, Harry Pickett, says that his paper ' s primary objective was to tell the truth. Students found the bi-monthly medium a means of entertainment and complete school information, and not just another flimsy gossip sheet hurried to the nearest trash can or picked up for the sole purpose of wrapping fish. Smoke Signals was noted for its controversial news coverage, especially its reporting on alleged scandals within the Student Government Association, and for its hard hitting editorials, which were thought-provoking and concise. Smoke Signals , published and edited by students in the Chowan School of Graphic Communications, is co-advised by James B. Scott White and Rochel Roland, co-editors of Chowan ' s annual, feel they and the staff have collaborated in the 1979-80 edition to compile a year ' s worth of memories that will last for a lifetime, in the lives of all Chowanians. Nothing can make a football or basketball game more exciting than a good high-spirited squad of cheerleaders leading the fans in support of their team. The 1979-80 Chowan cheerleading squad was just that kind of squad: one that could make a boring lop-sided game into an exciting rout and make a loss seem like an even closer hard fought game. As in years past, the Chowan cheerleaders kept enthusiasm high no matter what the scoreboard read. Chowan ' s tradition of winn- ing was upheld along with its tradition of active fan participation. The cheerleading squad can take some credit for assuring both traditions, as they urged the Braves ' teams to victory while making the crowd a deciding factor at every home game. Under the direc- tion of their sponsor, Mrs. Alice D. Vann, director of residence life, the cheerleaders did their job of develo- ing sportmanship among Chowan students, maintain- ing enthusiasm and school spirit, and improving the relationships between Chowan College and other teams at athletic events. For the season, however, Coach Jim Garrison ' s of- fense wasn ' t as potent, and his tribe settled for a 7-4 record and a second place conference standing behind arch-rival Ferrum. Garrison, who completed his 22nd season here at Chowan, won his 115th game, which ranks him fourth among active junior college coaches in the nation. The Braves relied on its nationally ranked defense for the better part of the season to come up with the big plays. Giving up a stingy 8.9 points an outing, Chowan ' s defense was led by the Bookends , defensive ends Robert Brown and Hal Henderson. Henderson, an all-American last season as a freshman, and Brown an all-conference selec- tion, terrorized opposing quarterbacks on Saturday after- noons, to the delight of Garrison. Chowan ' s biggest victories came over two four-year universities in the form of Duke ' s JV and East Carolina ' s junior varsity, winning 10-7 and 13-6 respectively. Tailback Percy Godette again led the conference in rushing, and was the starter in the Seventh Annual Coastal Co nference all-star team, along with Brown and Henderson. Chowan quarterback Xavier Love was the games Most Valuable Offensive Player. Chowan, at one time ranked as high as sixth in the coun- try by the Associated Press, had two new coached on the scene this season in Scott Colclough and former Chowan defensive coach Dan Surface. For the 22nd consecutive season, Jerry Hawkins was the offensive line coach. After a hard fought victory over Duke ' s JV, Coach Jim Garrison lauds the play of his troops. Jim Garrison, puffing on his traditional cigarette, looks pensively as the offensive team attempts to move the ball in the Braves 7-0 loss to Lees McRae. 103 MEET THE BRAVES 8 Mike Stewart 54 Jimmy Allen Ray Bryson 10 Eric McDaniels 55 Walter Poston William Dalton 11 Sam Hill 57 Mike Grant Chris Didlake 12 Mike Arrington 58 James Fraser Joey Edwards 13 Kenneth Phillips 59 Jeff Gordon Don Elko 14 Xavier Love 60 Tim Sechrest Thaddeus Farrar 15 Leroy Zimmerman 61 Jeff Speight McArthur Gatewood 16 Burgest Coles 62 Leonard Gray Don Grukle 17 Anthony Leonard 63 Craig Lovett Jim Guffey 18 Amos Jordan 64 Brad Emerson Dave Guthrie 19 Anthony Gregory 65 Chuck Amos Bill Harris 20 Jerry Hedrick 66 Ronwood Harris Adam Herman 21 Gaffney Jackson 67 Amos Twitty David Leman 22 Keith Petty 68 Rayfield Zeigler GregMcDaniel 23 Mike Irvin 69 Jody Schulz Reginald McLendon 24 Micky Newsome 70 MikeRudd Richard Maher 25 Gary Wells 72 Charles Brooks Norman Marsh 26 Jose Matos 73 Danny Mayo Duke May 27 Mike Sheppard 74 David Dean Steve Millen 28 Elliott Washington 75 Rick Thornton Jerry Mills 29 Whit Bradham 76 Kemp Page Alan Murphy 30 Travis Boulware 77 Danny Jones Charles Newton 31 Terry Tenney 7S Julian Stray horn Willie Nimmons 32 Percy Godette 79 Keith McFadden Rick Peters 33 Calvin Munden 80 Harold Williams Don Robertson 34 Delbert Melvin 81 Deno White Jerry Settle 35 Richard Cox 82 Carl Turner Dennis Skeeter 36 Arthur Washington h:s Todd Moore James Springs 37 Tommy Jones si Rory Gibson Vince Sumter 38 Henderson Ware 85 Robert Brown Keith Taylor 39 Donald Winters si; Hal Henderson James Tillis 50 Steve Knowles 87 Herb Sanderson Robert Williams 51 Mike Carter ss Julius Sessoms William Wright 52 Alonza Cady 89 Mike Hayes 53 Robert Paul John Paul Bennett 104 ' Famous Amos is all by his lonesome. The lady spikers finished second in the tough NJCAA Region X tournament in the fall, improv- ing its third-place finish of 1978 when they were 7-17 overall. Three players were selected to the all-Region team, as well as being selected Chowan ' s top spike rs. Wanda Bacote of Charlotte was named the outstanding offensive player, while Terri Tyler, freshman co-captain from Raeford, earned the honor from the defense. Sophomore co- captain Georgia Ross of Charlotte was named the team ' s most valuable player. Improving on a 5-12 season of a year ago, Coach Roy Winslow and his Lady Squaws finished the 1979-80 basketball season with a fine 17-9 campaign. The final season standing is the finest women ' s finish in the school ' s history. During the season Winslow started a young, but very talented group of hoopsters. Six players shared starting duties and five were freshmen, with the most talented be- ing 6-1 freshman forward, Donnie Stephens. Stephens, an All-Region 10 selection and a member of the Eastern All-Region 10 Tournament, led the ladies in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage. She pop- ped the cords at a 17.8 clip, brought home 11 rebounds and fired a blistering 53.9 percentage from the floor. Chowan ended its season with a 91-70 loss to defending national NJCAA finalists Louisburg in Raleigh. Chowan ' s 1979-80 wrestling team made the finest showing of any Chowan wrestling in the school ' s 132-year history. Other accolades the team received included a seventh place finish in the Natonal Junior College Athletic Associa- tion ' s annual national finals in Worthington, Minnesota, where two Chowan wrestlers picked up their share of glory. The wrestlers also managed to win the Southeast ern.Regional Tournament title in Cocoa, Florida. Chowan nosed out Chattahoochee Community College by one-fourth of a point to bring home the championship. The Braves were paced by Doug Saunders in the 134-pound division and Steve Miltsakakis in the 190-pound class. Both sophomores won individual championships. Placing second for Chowan were Earl Sheppard (118), Ken- ny Barber (150), Donald White (158), and David Leman (heavyweight). Saunders and Miltsakakis took their act to Minnesota in March and represented Chowan well in the nationals. PANTY RAID ERRUPTS INTO VANDALISM HUNDREDS INVADE DORMS By DEAN LOWMAN News Editor Although it started out as a seemingly harmless prank characteristic of college life, a midnight panty raid created a sense of panic, confusion and fear and caused much destruction to the Chowan College community on October 18. Hundreds of students, both male and female, invaded the various residence halls in the late-night venture, trking items ranging from underclothes to dresses and trousers. In addition, doors and windows were broken and some students almost suffered serious injury. We were taken completely by surprise, commented Renee Lambert, head resident on fourth floor of the Columns Building. One of my girls went into shock, another suffered an asthma attack, and yet another almost had a stroke because of the rapid in- crease in her blood pressure. The Columns building was the site of the most damage. Three d oors were damaged as was one window. Belk Dorm endured a broken glass door in its lounge while a window in a room in Jenkins Hall was damaged. Total cost of repairing the damages is $201.09. As for the determining of proration, Jack Hassell, head of the Maintenance Department, feels that the respon- sibility for determining how the pro- rate will be distributed for damages done in something like a panty raid is left with the head residents of the dorms and the deans. Hassell admits that he ' s not sure whether the residents of the damaged dorms will have to pay for the repairs if the guilty parties aren ' t determined. However, Hassell adds that he feels the cost, approximately 20 cents per person, will probably be charged to every student. What caused the event to change from a mere panty raid into a destructive venture? Apparently, some of the par- ticipants were under the influence of alcohol and got caught up in the festivities, commented Dean Roy Winslow, dean of men. This caused their inhibitions to be lowered and allowed them to be talked into invading the dorms and, in some cases, invading the rooms. Winslow added that he felt panty raids are part of college life and could be accepted more readily by the administration if they (the students) hadn ' t gone overboard. Most of the concern exemplified by the students surrounds the reluctance of the participants to return clothing obtained in the raid. Mrs. Alice Vann, director of residence life, is serving as the coor- dinator of the recovery effort. Mrs. Vann reports that items are being returned very slowly: Only a few items, such as a dress and a little bit of underclothing have been turned in to me. I have also had a lady ' s watch turned in — this has not been claimed yet. She also believes that many students are keeping articles of clothing as souvenirs. However, Mrs. Vann ad- vocates the students returning the more expensive items such as shirts, blouses, dresses, etc. Some of the students ' rooms were completely ransacked and several complete wardrobes were taken, she lamented. My guess is that the whole thing was organized as a type of joke which simply got out of hand, commented Dean Clayton Lewis, dear, of students. Though the event caused a great disturbance on campus, the ad- ministration did not become overly concerned until the students made illegal entries into the dormitories. Lewis indicated that the college could not tolerate that behavior which violates school policy and remain the type of institution that it professes to be. If the students remain outside the residence halls, that ' s fine as it ' s traditional, concluded Lewis. But, if they enter the residence halls in future raids, they will probably be dealt with more severely if caught. 144 THE BLOODMOBILE Blood Gifts Exceed Goal « By DONNA SWICEGOOD The Red Cross Bloodmobile visit to the Chowan campus on September 27 was deemed an overwhelming suc- cess by Steve Nelson, director of Stu- dent Activities. Chowan exceeded its 200-pint goal by 85 pints. 308 persons participated, while 23 were given medical referrals which brought the total donations to 285 pints. This was the largest single collection of blood in Hertford County in the last five years, Nelson emphasized. The Blood Cup was won by Halifax Community College last year with near- ly the same percentage of donors as Chowan had this year, according to Nelson. We could be in the running for the Blood Cup this year. Nelson main- tained. Cris Roe, Red Cross regional representative, presented programs in assembly on Monday (Sept. 24) and Wednesday (Sept. 26) where he ex- pressed his appreciation to Chowan. He also said that the Chowan Program is one of the best programs ever, ac- cording to Nelson. - . . ;iJJ «tJ|l 145 FEATURE... NEW GYMNASIUM NEARS COMPLETION As the 1979-80 academic year drew to a close, the new $2.5 million gymnasium-physical education facility was com- pleted and ready for use. An anonymous half-million dollar contribution was received for the structure ' s completion, with a stipulation that it be named in honor of Senator Jesse A. Helms. The gymnasium contains three full-size basketball courts, two classrooms, a weight room, a mini-gym, three courts for handball and paddle tennis, steam-bath, sauna, therapy room, laundry room, and an Olympic size swimming pool. The structure ' s completion really makes Chowan somethin ' special! :• Ml; ■A side view of the building. 146 MOMENTS FROM THE (jjiftljgj WARM WEATHER FUN - Bernard Miller displays Hubert which he caught in Lake Vann on campus TO THE EDITOR To the Editor: I have been here at Chowan now for four weeks and, for the most part, I ' m thoroughly impressed with what I see. I like my classes, professors, and my schedule. All the guys on my floor get along well and are able to help each other out if anybody needs it. In general, the peo- ple are friendlier, even more so than at my high school, which is the size of Chowan ( approximately 950 students ) . The planned activites are adequate enough to take the place of most city ac- tivities. The other activities are filled by going to Hill ' s Pub; and the Pig Pickin ' s, sponsored by the students of the different dormitories on campus. The dorms and library provide good study habits, except when students who have nice stereo systems begin to show them off by cranking the volume. The one aspect that doesn ' t con- tribute to good study habits is the food served in Thomas Cafeteria. Most of the food served in there is basically starch. The best part of the cafeteria is its salad bar, but I look at it this way, who can mess up a salad? For breakfast you get running scrambled eggs, hash browns, toast, pastry, and cereal; all basically starch, not a well balanced diet at all. I don ' t eat lunch very often, so I don ' t know what ' s generally served. For sup- per, however, we ' re served tasteless food and fatty meats which is just as bad as starch. This college has it made with modern facilities and a good reputation, but if the administration wants to make a perfect place — spend a little more on the food! ! Sincerely, Gary Joyce COLD WEATHER FUN - Unidentified student gets a ski tow along Jones Drive around Squirrel Park during one of last winter ' s snowy days. 147 FEATURE... SGA PRESIDENT ALLEGEDLY LEADS PANTY RAID By HARRY PICKETT Smoke Signals Editor Michael Burke, Student Government Association president, will not be impeached or suspended from office as rumors had it in early December after his actions following an attempted toothbrush raid at Belk Hall. It seems that Burke, allegedly one of the instigators in a panty raid in October, squirted shaving cream on girls who were chasing him outside of East Hall after the raid. After being summoned to SGA advisor and Residence Life Director Mrs. Alice Vann after the incident, Burke denied his frivilous shaving cream escapade, but later had to own up to it, as Smoke Signals photographer Randy Rock Murphy unveiled photos of the incident. Asked if he denied telling Mrs. Vann that he was not involved in the melee, Burke, said, I don ' t know if I told her that or not. I could have. I don ' t recall. Clayton Lewis, dean of students, said he disapproved of Burke ' s motives. He said he did not know the president was involved until late the next morning. He was informed by a member of the Student Development Staff. The night of the spoof toothbrush raid, Burke said he was in his room when he received a phone call from a girl. The girl was probably from Columns Hall, he noted, because he has received threats and nasty letters from them all year. She said I had better lock my door or they were going to get me, Burke explained. They thought I was in the last raid. Burke, who stays in Parker Hall, said the girl said she and her friends were coming to raid the whole dorm. Burke said the girls were going to make sure they were going to get me. Burke said he then immediately went to Scott Colclough, head resident at Parker, to tell him of the girls ' intentions, but he was out. He then went to Greg Kaserman, resident assistant on second floor, and Kaserman locked the doors to Parker Hall. The student executive said he then called Mrs. Marcella Buffaloe, head resident at Belk Hall, to warn her that some Parker men were on their way over to the girls ' dorm. But he insisted he never went to Belk Hall to start the raid. I only wanted to stop the raid. According to bystanders, the attempted raid was broken up by members of the administra- tion. Then Burke emerged on the scene with shaving cream in hand at East Hall, squirting his rivals with the white foam. Certainly I don ' t approve of his (Burke ' s ac- tions) or the young ladies going into residence halls to raid for toothbrushes, Lewis said after the incident. There is competition or conflict between Mike Burke and the girls in Columns. Burke and Lewis had a conference two days later. I didn ' t tell him he would be suspended, Lewis offered. I told him of the prospect of an officer being relieved of his duties, but I wasn ' t specifically talking about him. I told him we couldn ' t have it, Lewis con- tinued. As an officer he couldn ' t behave in such a manner, particularly since he was SGA presi- dent. Burke said he didn ' t know why he was called to Dean Lewis ' office at the time. I don ' t know for sure, but I think it was because of a news reporter. The SGA president claims the photos taken of him by Smoke Signal ' s Murphy were fake prints. This is a school of Graphic Arts and this is a good school for photography. I think they could do trick photography if they wanted. I told Dean Lewis that Harry Pickett (Smoke Signal editor ) was out to get me. Lewis said Burke is capable of being an effec- tive SGA president but noted, however, that past presidents have been suspended at Chowan for improper behavior. Mike Burke has got to learn a lesson that Richard Nixon had to learn, Lewis said. Nixon had to learn that he was not above the law. If you play, you pay. 148 - IMF ; ■r 149 150 CLASS SECTION Z sJ£%- pjT i O r ft V) n o) 151 Abba-aji, Ashiek Abdulmunini, Yusufu Abshar, Naderi Adams. Geffrey A. Adams, Terry Afsharjalili. There were different kinds and types: Box, Bird, Dia- mond . . . anything that would get off the ground and into the sky. It was great to take it to the beach and let it fly. Or even in the street hoping that it wouldn ' t get caught in the wires. Seeing the color ful kite in the air, floating free, while every once in a while giv ing a tug on the string to keep it up took up hours at a STREAKING . . . was the number one pastime of young and old alike? So famous was this pastime that Ray Stevens ' single about it sold over a million copies. One could never tell when they might get moonstruck, whether it be day or night. time. Sometimes we ' d get daring and make that famous kite do circles in the air. We couldn ' t wait for those win- dy days. BIKING . . .was a relaxing thing to do on a sunshiny summer day? Call- ed the English racer or 10 speed these bikes had skinny tires and brakes on the handlebar. Going up high hills took quite a bit of pumping action, but coming down was with ease and at a very fast pace. We all remembered not to use the front brakes real quick because from experience we knew that a head over heels trick would happen. ROLLERSKATING . . . meant going to the skating rink on Saturday morning (cause Mom needed a few hours of peace and quiet), pulling on those heavy boot-type skates, and cruising around the rink listening to your all-time favorite waltzes? This was the image of roller rinks until disco hit the scene. Today, with the help of the disco craze, roller rinks are a place for enjoyment for everyone. The waltzes have been put away and replaced with disco or rock n ' roll music. The old booty skates have been replaced with lighter and more attractive disco skates. In general, the atmosphere has changed causing rollerskating to become a popular hobby and sport. JOGGING . . . first entered the physical fitness scene? It was a chore to decide what kind of jogging suits to buy, how far or long to jog, and what shoes would best satisfy the joggers needs. To date, jogging is the fastest growing ex- ercise for physical fitness and is recom- mended highly by many physicians as a good way to get in shape. Besides that, it makes for an interesting afternoon in the park for those guy and girl watchers. DANCES . . . were held in the junior high gym and you had to meet your date there? How about your Junior and Senior Proms when you stayed up all night learn- ing the latest steps. Steps like the Twist, the Shag, the Slide, the Hustle, the Bump, the Fish, the Bunnyhop, the Rock, the Bus Stop, and the Pretzel. Do you remember when you danced at your first Chowan dance. ' ? 212 NKJLr SKATEBOARDS . . . became the popular transpor tation of all of the neighborhood kids? It was a task to master that simple four-wheeled contraption but once you did, the sky was the limit. So popular did this hobby become that special equipment and parks were established for those loyal and devoted riders. Those not so devoted riders settled for the sidewalk, pavement, or blacktop and only hoped that the skateboard would not do them in. YO-YO ' s. . .were the big craze during the ear- ly 70 ' s? The Duncan Yo-Yo Corporation held tour- naments statewide, challeng- ing all comers, to establish the Duncan Yo-Yo champion. Par- ticipants came from near and far to vie for the championship with their Duncan Butterflies, Duncan Glow-in-the-Darks and the famous Duncan special. They performed tricks such as rock the baby, round the world, ' ' and the dreaded spider ' s web. Do you remember when you might have entered some of these contests? SLANG . . . used to be Peace Brother, Like Wow, Heavy Man, Groovy, Give Me Five, Love and Flower Power? What sed to be is gone and now it ' s What ' s Happening, Get Off, Decent, Go For It, Jive Turkey, Do You Love Me or What?, Let ' s Talk Some Trash, and That ' s Life! FRISBEES . . . would go zinging by when you were at the beach, in the park, at the schoolyard, or in the dorm hall? It didn ' t matter whether you had an official sportsman frisbee, a moonlight special, or one of those cute little Burger Chef specials, but what did matter was the enjoy- ment of watching it sail throught the spring or summer air, taking dips and dives, toward its human or animal receiver. PET ROCKS . . . first ap- peared in novelty shops across the continent? This was truely a unique trend. Millions of people went to their favorite variety or novelty store and purchased their very own pet rock. Homes were set up, names were given, and instructions were read as to the best care and maintenance for the various types of rocks. Can you remember when you bought you own pet rock and the name you gave it? Something more interseting to think about is the price you paid for owning a glorified rock! ! WATERSLIDES . . . were constructed at the beach? What a great feel- ing to climb thoses 30 or 40 steps to the top of the slide, jum- ping on that cushioned mat and speeding down the slippery slide to the cool, clear pool waiting at the bot- tom. Waterslides have become a major at- traction of beachgoers and what a a great way to beat the heat of a hot summer day. 213 214 215 pin stripe suits K Qf ' lacosta « s tf J? levis ...FflSH 216 test tube babies t.v. games V calculators 217 RESIDENCE HALL STAFF Belk Hall Marcella Coburn- Residence Director Suzie Whalen-Associate Residence Director Denise Martin (1st floor) Sandra Brown (1st floor) Pat Csigi (2nd floor) Hannah Harper (2nd floor) Nancy Loy (3rd floor) Leeann Barlow (3rd floor) Jenkins Hall Dereatha Thompson-Residence Director Terri Davis (1st floor) Renee Lambert (1st floor) Janet Whitaker (2nd floor) Jacki Bass (2nd floor) East Hall Bennie Bee Bridgewater-Residence Director Randy Stogner (1st floor) Mark Strickland (2nd floor) Chris Creswell (3rd floor) Mixon Hall Charles McCook-Residence Director Rodney Peters (1st floor) Norman Marsh (2nd floor) West Hall Mike Britt-Residence Director Bob Lumpkins-Associate Residence Director Dennis Loan (1st floor) Mike Bosch (1st floor) Scott Boniface (2nd floor) Ken Benjamin (2nd floor) Steve Harrison (3rd floor) Parker Hall Scott Colclough-Residence Director Lynn Carter-Associate Residence Director Kim Griffin (basement) Rayfield Zeigler (1st floor) Greg Kaserman (2nd floor) Steve Whittemore (3rd floor) Steve Sanders (4th floor) Scott White (6th floor) Grant Maness (7th floor) Dietrich Ricks (8th floor) 218 INTRAMURALS MEN ' S BASKETBALL First Place — Seventh Floor Parker Hall Second Place — Basement Parker Hall GIRL ' S BASKETBALL First Place — First Floor Jenkins Hall Second Place — First Floor Belk Hall MEN ' S FOOTBALL First Place — Second Floor East Hall Second Place — First Floor Parker Hall GIRL ' S FOOTBALL First Place — First Floor Jenkins Hall Second Place - Third Floor Belk Hall MEN ' S VOLLEYBALL First Place — Seventh Floor Parker Hall Second Place — First North West Hall GIRL ' S VOLLEYBALL First Place - Third Floor Belk Hall Second Place — Columns FOOTBALL SKILLS(MEN) 1.
