Bismarck wrote that a really great man is known by three signs — generosity in design, humanity in the execution, and moderation in sucess. The world has far too many unsung heroes — those for whom proper recognition is not frequent enough in the coming. Each year the students of Chowan College vote to recognize one to whom such acknowledgement should come. The one being so honored with the dedication of the 1979 CHOWANOKA is now completing more than fifteen years of service to our institution. During these continuous years of service, it is doubtful that any area of the college community has not felt the impact of his presence. From athletic events to dramatic productions, from the classroom to the chapel, from mass assemblies to individual conferences, this man has lived the dedication he maintains for his home and family, for his profession, and for his God. The enthusiasm exerted for his work is never superficial, and the sincerity with which he approaches a variety of tasks is obvious. Those who are privileged to know him find that his advice is sound based upon good sense and judgment and his concern is ever genuine. Faculty, students, staff and ad- ministrators respect him, for his life portrays a loyal friendship enveloped in peace and good will which has endeared him to many. Therefore, it is in grateful recognition of his worthy contributions to Chowan College, his unselfish ser- vice which has lifted the quality of life for so many, and his dedication to the high calling of serving youth that we dedicate this edition of THE CHOWANOKA to our Chaplain, Dr. R. Hargus Taylor.
