The world has far too many unsung heroes — those for whom proper recognition is not frequent enough in the coming. Each year the students of Chowan College vote to recognize one to whom such acknowledgement should come. The one being so honored with the dedication of the 1979 CHOWANOKA is now completing more than fifteen years of service to our institution. During these continuous years of service, it is doubtful that any area of the college community has not felt the impact of his presence. From athletic events to dramatic productions, from the classroom to the chapel, from mass assemblies to individual conferences, this man has lived the dedication he maintains for his home and family, for his profession, and for his God. The enthusiasm exerted for his work is never superficial, and the sincerity with which he approaches a variety of tasks is obvious. Those who are privileged to know him find that his advice is sound based upon good sense and judgment and his concern is ever genuine. Faculty, students, staff and ad- ministrators respect him, for his life portrays a loyal friendship enveloped in peace and good will which has endeared him to many. Therefore, it is in grateful recognition of his worthy contributions to Chowan College, his unselfish ser- vice which has lifted the quality of life for so many, and his dedication to the high calling of serving youth that we dedicate this edition of THE CHOWANOKA to our Chaplain, Dr. R. Hargus Taylor. i :. ft •1 III ■ - I ' luSi , C howan College began as the Chowan Baptist Female Institute in Murfreesboro N.C. in the year 1848. Dr. God- win C. Moore is credited as the founder of the college and served on the Board of Trustees until his death in 1880. Murfreesboro itself was originally a landing site on the Meherrin River called Murfrees Landing because the site served the farmland of William Murfree. In 1786, William Murfree donated 97 acres of land for the establishment of a town, and in 1787 the town charter of Murfreesboro was ratified. Pure water, natural drainage and the Chowan River as transportation aided Murfreesboro in quickly becoming the leading town in Hertford County. In the late 1700 ' s the nation was recovering from the expenses of the War of Independence and therefore could pro- vide little public schoohng. Most educational facilities were funded privately by the local residents. The Hertford Academy was begun in 1794, the first incorporated school in the county. Then the Buckhorn Academy was founded in 1847 in the present community of Como. The late 1840 ' s saw the development of several schools, such as the Wesleyan Female College, Chowan Baptist Female College (both in Murfreesborol, and the Union Academy and Wesleyan Female College, both failed; only Chowan continued under the aid of the West Chowan Baptist Association, the leading group of Baptists in Hertford County. This is the same association which had aided and supported Wake Forest Institute in February of 1834. It became apparent to Dr. Godwin C. Moore in the late 1840 ' s that another institute of higher learning was needed for women now that Union Academy had relocated out of Mur- freesboro. Dr. Moore had been a trustee of Wake Forest Col- lege, the first Baptist college of North Carolina since 1836. Besides needing books, buildings, and faculty, the need to educate women was put forth by Dr. Moore. The ante- bellum period in North Carolina was no different from that of any other southern state. Women were mastered by their husbands — they could not own property, sue or be sued, or make a will without their husbands ' permission. Surprisingly, it was the church who came to the aid of many schools who wished to educate women. From such roots Chowan Baptist Female In- stitute began. Murfreesboro became the designated site of the college; therefore buildings had to be purchased in the area. The first such purchase was the Banks ' School buildings, which were formerly used as a girls ' school. They were purchased for $1,225 and were repaired for immediate use. Archibald McDowall, a Wake Forest graduate, was engaged by Dr. Moore as Chowan ' s first acting president. On October 11, 1848, Chowan Baptist Female Institute opened and registered eleven students. Gradually, girls came by boat and mule until enrollment increased to forty-seven. The first five month session at Chowan cost $113, which in- cluded room, board, tuition and extras. (Present Chowan students are known to spend as much per semester for books alone.) In order to promote habits of economy and simplicity in the girls, uniforms were required of the girls (made with The Columns Building was completed in 1852 materials from local merchants) and expensive jewelry was prohibited. They were also required to attend church in Murfreesboro every Sunday. The school grew in size and curricula, with many church associations aiding the institute. In 1937 it became ap- parent to the Board of Trustees that Chowan could not operate as an accredited senior institution under contem- porary standards. Chowan closed during the World War II, then re-opened as a junior college a few years later. In the early 1950 ' s, several vocational courses were offered, such as bookkeeping, business, and secretarial studies. The Raleigh News and Observer donated to Chowan a Linotype machine, which created the Graphic Arts Department, with John McSweeney as instructor. A joint-stock company was formed in the early 1850 ' s to finance construction of the college. The first such building was the Columns Building, constructed at a cost of $15,724.73; in November of 1852 it was ready for use. Salaries for faculty were paid out of the companies ' revenues, with the president receiving $2,000 annually, the mathematics pro- fessor $1,000 annuaUy, with other positions receiving less, as of 1868. Other expenses were met by fund drives, of which the townspeople of Murfreesboro contributed heavily. The need for new facihties was constant. The Columns building was soon outmoded and an extension was added in 1923. Stone Cottage, was built for $2,600 in 1914. The F. O. Mixon dormitory for men was constructed in 1954 at a cost of $77,434. The Askew Student Union was built in 1956, along with the Green Science Building. Jenkins Hall, a women ' s dormitory, was constructed in 1958 for $300,000. Construction has continued to the present, with four men ' s dormitories on campus and a new $2.3 million dollar gymnasium project underway. Chowan, as in the past, strives to build on its reputation and prepare for the future. Parker Hail Whi taker Library 9 Each year at Chowan College a reception is held in President Whitaker ' s home for the new and transfer students. The students meet many of the faculty members — so many in fact, that one feels as if he has shaken the hand of every single Chowan employee. The students also meet their fellow students, many for the first time. When you weren ' t shaking hands or drinking punch (which was rather good) you were Ustening to music pro- vided by several students. Many a sophomore at- tended to check out the new students or hne up a date for the dance later that week. The reception went until late in the evening, and one wonders how many times did Dean Winslow say, How are you? I ' m Roy Winslow and this is my wife, Laura. . . Betsy Paffe is greeted by Dr. Whitaker Lawrence Mumford meets Dean Winslow Mary Slade (I) and Louise Jones fr) serve punch to the students. 12 Suzi Whalen greets Mrs. Winslow Rebecca Matheu s smiles as she greets Mrs. Whitaker Karen Field, Jennifer Waffs, and Angle Elder do the entertaining. 13 Dances were held at Chowan a number of times this year They were sponsored and paid for by the Student Government Association and were held in Thomas Cafeteria. Most of the dances were highly attended by students and well en- joyed The SGA also sponsored the sale of soft- drinks but no admission was charged Three of the bands were: Bill Deal and the Rondells, Fat Ammons Band and Staircase. 14 Martha McGraw, Parker This year Spring Festival was held the week of April 23-28. The festivities began with free movies from Monday through Friday. The activities included tug-o-war, volleyball, Softball, frisbee horseshoes, eggtoss, three-legged race, buck-buck, and a cutest legs contest for male faculty members. Music was pro- vided by WWDR, the Brian Smith Band, Karen Field and Becky Keever. The activities were ended with the showing of the movie, The Wiz. Art exhibits were set up in Daniel and Green Halls and a photography exhibit was displayed in McSweeney Hall. Spr- ing Festival concluded with a semi- formal dance at 9:00 p.m. with rnusic by Buster. ' jFT liiilMBiitf Annie Marie Harrison, Belk 17 Day by day students rack their brains and fill their minds with the knowledge they need to pass tests and learn skills, but students don ' t spend all day and night in the books. One of the favorite after hours entertainment for Chowan students was and still is The Light. It is a supposively ghost light which haunts a section of railroad tracks near the school. Hundreds upon hundreds of students have visited the tracks in search of the origin of the mysterious light but no one has ever achieved their goal. The light is supposed to be cause by a ghost named Uncle George, who lost his head in an accident and searches for it with his lantern nightly. Maybe one day someone will discover the cause of the light, but until then, the light still at- tracts the attention of students who look for a little excitement after a long day of studying. 18 Hiilfl K 1 H i rs B HL tMi Jm c p Hy ' p H y TOe j ' rsf major production of the Chowan Players was Arsenic and Old Lace , a play in three acts which was written by Joseph Kesseling with special arrangements with Dramastic Play Service, Inc. It was acted on Decembers, 7, and 8. There was a large attendance including members of the neighboring High Schools and a few Chowan Professors. One of the special quests was a teacher who had directed the same play when Ms. Boyce per- formed in it in college. 19 The cast member and the part he or she played are as follows: Mrs. Betty Batchelor — Abby Brewster; Greg Andrassy — The Rev. Dr. Harper; Gerg Simpson — Teddy Brewster; Johnny Carstens — Officer Brophy; Alan Johnson — Of- ficer Klein; Mrs. Esther Whitaker — Martha Brewster; Teresa Calfee — Elaine Harper; Ken Boaz — Mortimer Brewster; David Baker — Jonathan Brewster; Taghi Noktehdan — Dr. Eins- tein; Laura Askew — Officer O ' Hara; Bill Gam- brell, Lieutenant Rooney; and Jean Sexton as Witherspoon. The audience sees only the actors and actresses, but back stage there is more than just performers. The crew members were: Melanie PattisalL Assis- tant to the Director; John Hawthorne. Stage Manager; Fran Morris, Publicity; William Ross, Lights; Myrtle Hubley, Eileen Despagna, Haywood Jordan, and Alan Johnson, Props; Bar- bara Foster, Make-up; Melody Player, Costumer; Suzanne Bradley, Gayle Bonifas and Matthew Hicks, Ushers; Joe Curry, Betsy Paffe, and Mat- thew Hicks, Set Decorators; and Betsy Paffe. Pro- gram. The play, in its entirety was produced and directed bv Sandra N. Boyce. 20 21 Intramurals at Chowan give the students a chance to participate in sports without going through the hassle of practice or tryouts. Each willing student has the opportunity to play football, volleyball basketball and Softball with their dorm floor. Also, the individual students can take place in tennis tournaments; both singles and doubles, or run cross-country track. Each team victory or in- dividual victory scores points for the floor as an en- tirety. At the end of the year, the floor with the most points will receive the intramural champion- ship trophy to be placed in a trophy case in their name. She is a native of New York City. Coming from a family of 14 children, she knows what it ' s like to wait for meals. Before coming to Chowan, she work- ed at a YMCA for 6 ' 2 years serving the front desk and teaching arts and crafts. Lucy is a gourmex cook and an avid speedreader — she reads 2 books a day. mainly historical and biographical novels. Above all young people dominate her attention at present. I love the students, or I wouldn ' t be working here. she says. My mind is still young — youth are my thing. Where will she go after Chowan? SGA Executive Board The SGA executive officers were elected by a campus-wide election last year. The executive officers work with and supervise the Student Legislature and are the direct channel to the administration. All ex- ecutive officers were members of the Faculty-Student Relations commit- tee and met in conferences with members of the administration to discuss problems between students and the administration. Members of the ex- ecutive board attended the Student Leadership Workshop and several at- tended Camp Caraway where they met with SGA officers from other col- leges. 31 First Row: Mike Britt. The Student Legislature provided several popular movies per month. They had several dances by live bands each semester. The Legislature spon- sored special events such as Homecoming, Spring Festival, and Parents ' Day. They also had several speakers on campus. The Legislature had Ron Thomp- son and Larry Lassiter come to a meeting to discuss problems students were expressing about the cafeteria. The Legislature also had Mrs. Harris come to another meeting to discuss the Library. The Student Legislature had a jukebox placed in the snackbar. They also requested a campus-wide open dorm and soon after held an opinion poll. Although the majority of students voted in favor of Open Dorm, only a minority of the student body voted Based on these results, the Legislature requested approval of Open Dorm by the administra- tion, however the request was denied The Legislature also sponsored a can- didate from Chowan to represent the school in the Apple Blossom Festival. 32 i .c Listed below are the recipients of the Competitive Scholarship program at Chowan for 1978-79. There are some sections of this annual, particularly the Organizations section, that are not as complete as the staff would like. This is due to the fact that all Organizations material turned into the former section editor (photos, copy, layouts and even a proof book!) suddenly disappeared following that edtors withdrawl from the college at Spring Mid-Term. The Science Club was organized for the benefit of science oriented students at Chowan. Besides regular meetings, several social events were planned in the early Spring. The purpose of the Social Science Club is to help students see how they are influenced by society and how they in turn can have a impact upon their society. The activities of the club include programs on topics of political and social interest and participation in community service projects such as donating labor or collecting for relief, mow- ing lawns or putting up storm windows. Fund-raising projects such as selling peanuts, are for donations to charity or trips to see state or national Representatives. The club gives an award each vear on Honors Day. 43 The Photography Club was headed by Scott White, Presi- dent and by Robin Minton the secretary. Membership varied from meeting to meeting as the club offered slide presentations and exhibited professional work as ex- amples. The Student National Education Association was founded in 1937 as a department of the National Education Association and has served more than one million members since its inception. As it turned out. the ball club that we had was one of the finest ever thats put on a uniform at Chowan College. Offensively, we led most of the statistics in the conference in scoring and rushing and total offense. Defen- sively we were real young and as the year went on we got better and as a result led most of the statistical categories in defense as well. This team in comparison to that a year ago percentagewise we had a better record. ..and certainly with the lack of experience we would have to classify this past football team as a better one than the year before. With so many still another improvement is our record in 1979. Cpach Hawkins — Personality wise, we had many different types on the team... most were really gung- ho or really out to do the best job that they could. Emotionally we had a real fine team — most of the times the kids were up for the games. We had a httle let down after our Ferrum game because at that time we were 3-0 as a result of that they were ready for the game with Ferrum... when we lost that one some of the fellas had a let- down because they felt ' We ' ve lost this and can ' t win the national title. They soon got back on the right key and we finished up the season with a great team effort and a great record. Especially in our last few games we played with great intensity. Coach Ferguson — We ' re probably better off as far as the defensive front as weve ever been, particularly with size. This is my fourth year here and 1 d have to say as far as the job they got done this year, the line this year has been better than any other year. We had a whole lost more size this year, particularly up front. In the secondary, we shouldn ' t have been as good as we were last year — 1 don t think we rivaled last years secondary due to the fact that we re mainly in- experienced. Next year, in 1979, we ' ll probably be better than we were last year... right now we only started one sophomore back there and that ' s pretty tough. We had alot of injuries back there and switched the players around — we played nine different players there during the season. With the potential that ' s returnmg, next year should be our best. Due to a clerical error, the appointed referees were told it was an evening game instead of mid-afternoon. The game delay lasted well over an hour. It was a building year for the team, starting five freshmen and one sopliomore. The team came into its own by winning its last three matches. The Team was led by Co-Captain. Jan McKay and Georgia Ross. Ne.xt year ' s prospects look good — they have four starters returning and several substitutes developing into steady players. The team record was 7-17. The Braves won its second straight Eastern Tarheel regular season championship, posting an unblimished 8-0 league mark and a 23-7 cage finish: Sophomores Randolph Bell (41) and William Bogues (30) defend against a Newport News jumper. Teammate Robin Hoey (24) comes up from the rear to assist. The three cagers were instrumen- tal in leading Chowan to a 43-15 record over the past two seasons. This band of Chowan followers faithfully cheered their Braves on. but not hard enough obviously, for the Braves went down in defeat at the hands of Brevard Junior College, 58-57 in the finals of Region 10 tournament plav. 72 Above.
