The person being honored with the dedication of the 1978 CHOWANOKA first came to Chowan College twenty-one years ago. Since that time she has rendered the college continuous service in her dual role of First Lady and professor in the Department of Religion and Philosophy. Hundreds of students have been the recipient of her genuine friendhness, her wholesome attitude, and her dedication to service in the field of teaching. Her wilUngness to share with others demonstrates the unselfishness which is endearing to all who know her. In the classroom and on the campus, this professor maintains a sincere regard for the high principles upon which this institution was founded and upon which rests its continued success and monumental growth. To run Cross Country you must be mentally strong enough to accept the physical pain of 8 to 15 mile workouts, and you must have a team. Hard work, constant training and an experienced coach make a good team. But when you ' ve got an added plus — talent — your good team becomes great, and Chowan ' s team was just that, finishing the season with a 10 and 4 record and a 3rd place finish in the Region Ten Cross Countr Championship. Janet Collins begins her 14th year at Chowan as the head volleyball coach for women. She at- tended Westhampton College of the University of Richmond and earned the B.S. degree and she recieved the M.Ed, degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before coming to Chowan in 1964, she was instruc- tor of Science and Physical Educa- tion and head women ' s basketball coach at Creedmore, North Carolina. The Women ' s Recreation Association began at Chowan in 1964 under Mrs. Collins ' leader- ship. This organization controls In- tramurals, Intercollegiate Athletics, and Cheerleaders. The women ' s athletic program at Chowan is affiliated with the North Carolina Association for Inter- collegiate Athletics for women. The Chowan College 1977 Varsity VoUeyball Team finished its season by winning third place in the NJCAA Region X Volleyball Tournament at Peace College in Raleigh, NC and by placing two girls on the All Region X Volleyball Team : Mary Franklin, hitter and Nancy Williams, setter. The overall record was 8 wins and 11 losses. This team was led by Co-Captains, Nancy WiUiams and Patty Woodland. Although the squad was evenly split between freshmen and upper classmen, the starting team was predominately sophomores. Prospects for next year look good, but it will be a rebuilding year for us. We have one starter returning, Shema Payne, and several freshmen off the second team who were just beginning to develop into steady volleyball players at the close of the season. Our problem will be set- ters. We lose all four off this years team. The squad ' s leading golfer, Freshman Bobby Sears, paced his teammates in the early matches of the season, and Coach Bill SoweU gave directions and motivation in his first year as golf coach. Injuries and academic dif- ficulties shackled the team first semester. The team entered Christmas break with a dismal 3-4 record. The Braves matmen regrouped spring semester and produced Chowan ' s first winning season in wrestling. Their dual meet record was 11-6 with wins over four major universities and undefeated in junior college competition. The team plac- ed 3rd in the seven state Mid-Atlantic Junior College Region behind Middlesex. N.J. and Keystone, Pa. Chowan crowned three regional champions, Mike Ferrara (142), Roger Randall (150), and Dan Kraft (158). All of the regional champions scored at least one victory in the Junior College National Championships with Mike Ferrara (142) finishing in the top eight, nationally. The 1977-78 squad was led by two-time Mid-Atlantic Regional Champion, Dan Kraft (20-5): sophomore Ramon Collins (17-9): and a sensational pair of freshmen from Rancocas Valley, N.J. Mike Ferrara (23-5) and Roger Randall (21-6-1). Other lettermen were sophomores Mike Copper- thite (4-17), Doug Crowder (5-18), and freshmen Garland Mosley (6-8), Donnie Upton (7-10), Terry Howell (5-6). and Dan- nv Allen (7-16-1). 58 Wres tling Ne w s Chowan ' s three Mid-Atlantic cham- pions returned from the National Championship ' s held in Worthington, Minn. March 2-4 weary and disap- pointed. Coach Nelson reported the wrestlers were exhausted before the competition began and did not wrestle any where near their potential. In spite of their sub-par performances each of the wrestlers won at least one match. Chowan scored 4 and three-forths points in the national tournament. Cuyahoga West, IL 25-8 Placed 3rd, Lost - Garner, North ID. 12-4 60 Coach ' s Comments Naturally I am disappointed that the wrestlers did not win national honors, but I am extremely proud of each of them. They had outstanding seasons this year against tough competition. Mike (23-5) and Roger (21-6-1) are Freshman and will be returning next season. Dan (20-5) this year and (49-12) for the past two seasons is Chowan ' s only two time Regional Champion. He was also Chowan ' s 1976-77 Most Outstanding Athlete . They were the back bone of this year ' s 11-6 season, the first winning season in the history of the school, and enabled Chowan to capture third place honors at the Mid-Atlantic tournament. These young men are outstanding athletes. They will continue to bring recognition to themseleves and Chowan College each time they step on the mats! The rest of the time was spent in con- stant practice that was rewarded after practically every meet with another win. This just goes to show that hard work and talent can go a long way. 66 67 A Look at the Future 1 He ivew fnysical Education Center With the building of the new Gymnasium- Physical Education Center, Chowan will have succeeded in rounding out the major construction items of the Master Plan, which was set in motion in the early days of Dr. Bruce Whitaker ' s ad- ministration. Over the years, the Master Plan has been under constant study and review, and at every five-year interval, it has been thoroughly updated. From the earUest days of Chowan, physical education has been an important part of college life. In the mid-nineteenth century, young ladies of Chowan were taught physical culture. The College recognized then as today the importance of increasing an individual ' s capacity to live life more fully through enrichment of the whole per- son: MIND ■BODY - SPIRIT. The many features of the new Gymnasium- Physical Educatin Center will increase Chowan ' s ability to train young men and women for their future lives. These features include: three basket- ball courts, seating for 2,500 to 5,000 people, two classrooms, weight roon, wrestling room, locker rooms (including lockers for faculty), office space, four non-regulation courts (handball and paddle tennis), steam bath, sauna, therapy room, laun- dry room, storage, and an Olympic size swimm- ing pool. The new center promises to be an important and needed addition to the campus of one of our nation ' s leading two-year independent colleges. Besides being of direct service to the College, the new Gymnasium-Physical Education Center should provide a hand- some and modern facihty for visiting church and camp groups, and the community at large. In itself, the abiUty to seat 2,500 to 5,000 people will be a valued asset for the educational and cultural life of the College and the surrounding area. The present, outdated facility. 68 ' Roasting ' Honors 20 Years of Coaching Coach Garrison and family admire the framed tribute. Veteran Chowan coaches Jim Gar- rison and Jerry Hawkins captured their 100th football victory with the Braves 19-16 win over Wesley College on Garrison-Hawkins Day, November 5, and were honored guests at a roasting after the game in the col- lege cafeteria. Garrison, the Braves ' head coach, and Hawkins, assistant, are com- pleting their 20th campaign with the football team at the close of the 1977 season. Garrison, also coaches tennis and serves as athletic director and chair- man of the Department of Health and Physical Education. Hawkins coaches baseball and is a professor of physical education. Framed tributes were presented the coaches by Chowan President Bruce E. Whitaker. Dr. Whitaker said they have made a lasting impression on the players they have coached, not only in football but other sports as well. Whiteiker said the two coaches have helped many young people find themselves during their Chowan ex- perience. He added. We are happy to honor them today before many of their former athletes and many other friends. Under Garrison and Hawkins, Chowan has had seven winning season, including this year, since 1969. The 1970 squad finished 8-1 and won the Region 10 championship. The 1974 team was Region 10 tri-champions with an 8-2 record. Garrison was nam- ed Region 10 coach of the year in 1970 and 1976. Coach Hawkins and his wife proudly read the tribute. The SGA is a multifaceted organization. The main objective of the SGA is to serve as the voice of the students. The SGA sponsors many events including dances, movies, and the spring festival. The SGA ' s most important function is legislative. Campus Wide Open House is an example of such legislative action. The executive branch of the SGA consisted of Sam Clark (president). Ken Dobler (vice presi- dent), Debra Lynn Simms (secretary), Tom Smetts (treasurer), and (social co-persons) Joanne Jones and J. G. Byrum. Intramural competi- tion was held in volleyball, basketball, Softball, tennis, badminton and swimming. w R A 81 BSU-CCF The Baptist Student Union-Campus Christian Fellowship was formed to challenge the religious interests and meet their needs. Opportunities for effective service, spiritual growth, and social fellowship were provided for the members, of the BSU-CCF. Under the leadership of Dr. R. Hargus Taylor the BSU-CCF had a very active year. This year the Photography Club held a Photography Seminar which presented several guest speakers. Smoke Signals 85 Phi Theta Kappa The Phi Theta Kappa is a national, honorary, scholarship fraternity for the junior colleges of America and is open to students with a three point average, who are recommended by a faculty commit- tee and approved by the student members of the organization. 86 The Sociology Club, a service club for the community, had an active year. In the late fall, the club work- ed with the CADA (Chowan Area Development Association) stapling plastic over windows, to provide a warmer place for many underprivileged famihes. The club was involved in a variety of money making projects to pay for their membership in the national organization. The members got together every Wednesday night to play bridge and break the monotony of the classroom scene. 93 AjPA .t -v. - Touring Choir The Chowan Touring Choir is a selected group of students, who auditioned from the Col- lege Choir. The choir toured South Carolina and Florida as well as giving several concerts during the year. Chowan Choir The College Choir is made up os students interested in choral music. The choir met twice a week for rehersal and gave a fall and spring con- cert. Stage Band The Chowan College Stage- band entertained many with their performances at pep rallies, chapel services, special programs and in many places throughout the Mur- freesboro area. Under the direc- tion of Bob Brown the band practiced hard but had a good time. 95 RA ' s The Resident Assistant plays an important part in Chowan ' s dormitories. Their job was mainly to keep order on the hall, make sure the noise was kept low during study hours, and to give out call downs to those who disobeyed the rules. The freshmen girls were candidates for Princess, and the sophomore girls had the honor of running for Homecoming Queen. ' W ' As music drifted across campus in the morning hours of Homecoming Day, eleven Marching Bands competed for honors in the Festival of Marching Bands. The bands participating in Class A were: West Craven High School from Vanceboro, NC, Roanoke High School from Rober- sonville. NC, Nansemond Suffolk Academy located in Suffolk, VA., John Yates High School, also in Suffolk, VA., Murfreesboro High School from Mur- freesboro, NC, Bertie Senior High School in Windson, NC, Manteo High School from Manteo, NC, and Currituck High School from Barco, NC, In Class AA, only three bands participated, Ahoskie High School from Ahoskie, NC, Washington Senior High School in Washington, NC, who won first place in both classes, and Williamston High School at Williamston, NC. Washington Senior High won first place in the AA Class and took first place honors in the Marching Competition in both classes. They presented the pre-game per- formance. Currituck High School, who presented the half-time entertainment, was selected as The Band of the Day . Chowan ' s 1977 Spring Festival was unique in that it was attended by a small group of Peaceful Demonstraters . The Demonstration. led by an enthusiastic Fred Midgett, got its start when a decision by the Southern Baptist Convention cancelled an Atlanta Rhythm Section concert that the students had planned for a Sunday afternoon. Many students did not feel a full explanation was given as to the reason for this decision. Although this decision sparked the demonstrration. the main reason for it was to show the administration that some students felt the adminstration was not open enough to the students. V it ' Controversey Comes 106 To Chowan 108 The Chowan 1977 Spring Concert will long be remembered by the names Fresh. Phinneus Taylor, and Mother ' s Finest. Phinneus Taylor started off the night with a combination of country rock and rock and roll. Fresh ' s performance ended with a slight accident when a portion of the stage collaps- ed. The stage was quickly repaired and Mother ' s Finest was on, performing their last songs in the rain. The girls were judged not only on their talent, but also their poise, beauty, and personality. Wit- ches, haunted houses, candied apples, and the decorated door contest contributed to make it a spooky night for everyone. 122 Students Come To Chowan The 1977-78 school year at Chowan started off on a good foot. Students began moving in Sunday afternoon. August 21, looking for- ward to meeting their roommates, and getting acquainted with the col- lege. It is our plan to schedule one major event for our students on campus, as well as for prospective students, each semester. Horizons In Business has proven most successful for the fall semester. We are now in the planning stages of sponsoring an event similar to The Women — A Pro- fessional which will afford our students first-hand information as to the various types of professions available to the suc- cessful woman of today. Then, too, from time to time we have various professional people talk with groups of students enroll- ed in business curricula, both in and out of the classroom, about various specializa- tions in business. We now provide more than twelve pro- grams in business. Needless to say, it is our intention to provide a curriculum that fits the needs of each individual interested in collegiate business. We anticipate in the near future new directions in the com- puterization of accounting, economics, data processing, and even secretarial ad- ministration courses. We must have access to ' on-hands equipment ' within our depart- mental area so that our students will at least be acquainted with the very latest concepts. Being acting chairman of the Depart- ment is not an easy job. Nothing remains status quo in business: our progress must constantly be updated. There are not enough hours in the day for us to meet all the needs of our particular situation. Teaching . . . administration . . . personel. 135 The Department of Fine Arts James M. Chamblee Chairmflin Douglas E. Eubank Head of the Diviaion of Art Hugh R. Middleton, Jr. Stanley A. Mitchell David W. Parker The Department of Fine Arts includes music, drama, dance and art. In the past, choirs have performed at public schools and Senior Citizens Clubs. In- stumental and vocal ensemble groups have been formed by students, faculty and com- munity members. Each year, approximately eight concerts are given at the school, either by visiting per- formers or our own individuals or groups. All of these are sponsored by the department. In February a Youth Choir Festival was hosted by the department, for church choirs within the area. A weekend workshop and concert was performed by a Barber-Shop Quartet, in April. The Touring Choir went down to Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina for their spring tour. Mr. Brown ' s stage band has per- formed not only at the school, but also at parades and various community gatherings. The two professors of piano, Mr. Middleton and Mrs. Nicholson, teach and occasionally judge performers. This semester, they will both be includ- ed in the judging at the National Piano Guild. A new drama program is hopeful for the fall semester of 1978. Dr. Chamblee would Uke it to become active within the Fine Art program. Dance classes are being re-vitaUzed at Chowan, once again. This semester it includes one college class and six community classes of Modem Jazz. By next semester, it is possible that there will be larger classes with more stu- dent participation. 137 There is a chance that an advanced ceramics class will be introduced to the Art program. Field trips to New York galleries, the Crysler Museum in Nor- folk, frequent exhibitions in the school ' s own gallery, films and picnics, are some of the events sponsored by the Art Department. The Roden Gallery of Baltimore, exhibited works in the fall, and in February, Grum- bacher, an art supplies manufacturer, held a workshop on their materials, supplies, and the use of them. Courses offered in this department include a two-year degree in Printing Technology, Photography or Newswriting, which is the latest addition to the curriculum. A one-year diploma in Word Processing is also available. The only club within this department, is the Photography Club. It is open to any interested students. An historical association is trying to set up a replica of a colonial print shop here in Mur- freesboro, and they are also at- tempting to do the same in Conway, a town nearby. 143 The Department of Language and Literature Undine W. Bamhill Betty N. Batchelor For those students with a wider, willing interest in literature, there is a hterary club which meets monthly. Outstanding writers and poets are read and discussed. With increasing student need, and the feeling of a challenge in classroom work, enrollments are decreasing. With the reduced standards and abilities of high school re- quirements, and the increased college entrance requirements, the English department is having a rough time covering all of the students needs as well as they would like to. Kenneth G. Wolf skill Acting Chairman In all of the English classes, the major textbook is usually followed. Recently Mr. Wolfskill, who is acting chair- man of the English Department and a professor of sophomore English classes, introduced a novel for outside reading in his course. This year there is a new creative writing course offered by Mr. Mulder, for one hour of credit. The class is compris- ed of sincere students who are approved by the teacher. Mr. Mulder has had much of his own writings (mostly poetry), published quite often. The two foreign languages taught in the language department, are French and Spanish. In the last few years, two different methods of teaching have been formed. The first one is the traditional transla- tional study of prominent works of famous authors with philisophical ideas, objective approaches and with varied values. The translational courses are designed to meet the special needs of the students. The second method is a free conversational approach, where the students work at their own rate, interests, and according to their own vocabulary. It is an enjoyable class. Says Dr. Felker, I think they (the students! meet their need and I am terribly pleased. At the moment, A Great Books Discussion group has been started. The members included the faculty and the community. It is hopeful that students will be involved soon. Next year, a Foreign Film Festival might be possible. The Department of Mathematics Wesley L. Shrewsbury Brownie Stancil The math department offers a learn- ing laboratory from 2:00 - 4:00 every Monday through Thursday. This lab is designed to help those students who are in need of extra attention, in order to understand their course. Both pro- fessors and students work with these students. Dean Roy Winslow took over coaching the women ' s Softball and basketball teams this season and Coach Jerry Smith became the men ' s basketball coach. Both coaches had a very suc- cessful first year. Coaches Jim Garrison and Jerry Hawkins com- pleted their twentieth year as the Brave ' s football coaches. Mrs. Janet Collins ' varsity volleyball team cap- tured third in the tournament in Raleigh again for the second consecutive year. Not Pictured William G. Whitaker In addition to philosophy, and the old and new testament courses, an honors rehgion course was introduced within the last few years. Since most schools will only accept 6 hours of rehgion course credit hours, no other classes will be added. Every other year, the department sponsors a travehng seminar to Israel I Palestine), during the Christmas hohdays. One pro- fessor travels with the students, and these students recieve 3 college credit hours. All of the professors are active in church functions, and they are often asked to speak at various community meetings. Most of them have studied in Israel for several months at a time. This has benefited their backgrounds and teaching knowledge. Chaplain Taylor sponsors a Christian Campus Fellowship Club, Religious Em- phasis Week, and a Ministerial Alliance Club. The department sponsors a Science Club, which is directed by Mr. Tripp. Among other activities, students may also work in the green house. Co-operation is under way with the community, towards a waste-treatment project on the lagoons within this area. The major obstacle is time. 154 ' I , T IJji, Linda E. Tripp Few students are aware of the nature trail that cuts across from school to Highway 11. The path was built several years ago by a few science students. It obviously took a lot of work and students are encouraged to take care of it so it can continue to be used. Paul Warren G. Sexton Acting Chairman All of the courses in this department use film-strips, and movies, along with the textbook. Both Mr. Paul and Dr. GosneU have introduced a workbook to use with the main text. In relation to the General Survey Course, common to all colleges, the classes in the social science department are transferable. The department is limited to offering only freshman and sophomore programs, since most senior institu- tions will only accept those particular classes in a transfer. 158 The department sponsors a sociology club, which is headed by Dr. Gosnell. In the past, local congress persons and others, have visited the school to speak to several of the classes. Whitaker was honored by the Board of Trustees and Board of Advisors in appreciation and in commemoration of his twenty years of service at Chowan College and pointed out his tremendous achievements. To date, over $1 million dollars has been collected. If things continue to move in such a positive direction future Chowan students will have a new modern gym facility within the next few years. Four Named To All Coastal Conference Team Four Chowan College football players have been named to the All-Coastal Con- ference team. Chosen for the offensive team were tight end Bruce Bryant of Beltsville. Md., and tackle Ken Dobler of Virginia Beach, Va. Named to the defensive team were nose guard Claton Crosby of Walterboro. S.C, and free safety Jerrv Holmes of Hampton Va. Lisa Stanley was one of the Powder Puff football girls from Belk dorm. Regardless of the weather, he can usually be found in front of Whitaker Library practicing stunts for hours on end. 226 •A«rj fi Athletics Get Everyone Involved Athletics at Chowan do not necessarily mean varsity sports. Warm weather brings out the skateboards, the frizbees in Squirrel Park, and the bikes out of storage. People head to the river for a quick cooling off on hot days. This past year has proved successful for the varsity sports. Football came up with a winning season and the Lady BraveS grapped third in the volleyball tournaments in Raleigh. Dean Roy Winslow took over coaching girl ' s basketball and softball and Coach Jerry Smith from Bertie County led the men to the school ' s first conference championship in basketball. Coach Smith will also be coaching the spring tennis team. Scholarships Established Honoring Two Coaches Scholarships in honor of Jim Garrison and Jerry Hawkins have been established at Chowan College. The scholarships, Garrison Football Scholarship, and Hawkin s Baseball Scholarship. will provide $100 annually to the outstanding freshman student athlete in each of the two sports, according to Chowan President Bruce E. Whi taker. Whitaker said the $100 is applicable to the student ' s fees in his second year of study at Chowan. He said he was very pleased the scholarships had been established by action of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees in honor of the two veteran coaches who are in their 20th year at Chowan. Chowan ' s president said they are very deserving of this recognition and honor. He encouraged those who are interested to make a contribution to help fund the scholarships. He said a minimum of $2,500 will be needed to endow each scholarship and provide the $100 annually from the income. 227 Variety Finds Chowan s Campus James Richardson plays the bass guitar in the Chowan stage band. A sophomore music major, he has per- formed on many occasions. The chapel assemblies are always better attended when the students know Mr. Brown and his band are going to perform. Sherry Phelps, assistant head resident of Belk Dorm, and Aaron Tucker of West Dorm, proved themselves to be talented musicians. They are often called upon to share their talent at campus functions. Gil Morgens terriy Violinis t Chowan College had the pleasure and privilege to hear the young violinist, Gil Morgenstern, on Thursday, September 29, in the McDowell Columns Auditorium. Morgenstern is presently pr eparing to make his debut in Europe and North America, and will continue to concertize throughout North America. He is a graduate of the JuUiard School of Music in New York City. Morgenstern presented the concert goers with a diverse program, which easily pleased the most discriminating musical tastes. His program consisted of: Sonata in A Major. OP 12 No. 2 by Beethoven, Sonata No. 3 in D Minor. Overman, a sophomore from Newport News, was crowned the queen by President Bruce E. Whitaker. The freshmen princess was Carrie M. Pitman from Virginia Beach. Other festivities in- cluded the per- formance of the winning bands from the band com- petition held that morning in the football stadium. - ' 19 ' ' 4Kk a t Fire Destroys College Bam A barn in a wooded area of the Chowan College campus was destroyed by fire early Thursday. The structure was a landmark on the college property, and for several years has been used as part of an outdoor recreation area for students. Joseph Swift dips into some classical music. 230 Hugh Dillon appears to be calling more attention to his lack of attire than to his sign. Actually he was one of the protesters at the spring festival boycott. Highlight Meals Set Monthly The Cafeteria Committee met September 9th and chairman Ben Sut- ton told those present that at least one highlight meal such as steak would be served each month. He also stated that the college was trying to buy a grUl large enough to cook the number of steaks required. A new convention air-type oven has been ordered that will solve many problems including food preparation time. One of the major complaints of students was the lack of ice during the hot weather. Mr. Sutton explained that all of the ice machines broke a week prior to the opening of school. Only one machine is in operation now, however new ones have been ordered. One student complained about the number of flies in the cafeteria. It was said that the fly chaser fan has been broken for a long time. Replacement costs for broken and stolen utensils usually ranges from $200 to $250 per week. Several in- cidents of childlike behavior, such as students throwing glasses at the drink machine or deliberately throwing them on the floor were reported. One girl received a cut leg from a glass that broke near her. The cost of replacing these items comes directly from the food budget. Mr. Sowell, a regular patron of the cafeteria, said the system of checking I.D. ' s should be more consistent. He has observed inconsistency in I.D. checking, and felt that the system became lax when I.D. checking broke down.
