Every student has an opportunity to cast a vote after considering the possibilities before him and characteristics such as per- sonality, testimony, love and spirit always play an important roll in the decision. Upon thinking of these characteristics, we feel that the person chosen this year stands among the great ones who have previously attained the goals embedded in these things so important in life. In the one hundred and twenty-seven years of Chowan College ' s birth and growth many people in the eddying stream of leadership have given the best of themselves to grant our college its reputable position in educational challenge and spiritual guidance affording the atmosphere in which young minds grasp and grow. It is to one of the best of these that our dedication is addressed. To one who has exposed us to an incomparable dignity and discipline. To one who has led us in an awareness of things around us, our capabilities and an awareness of ourselves through special faculties. To one who has made education a fresh experience in the classroom and a rewarding experience in every phase. To one who remains to us a statue among youth — ultimately an individual, teaching, paradoxically, pride and humility, one who is a part of the institution and apart in being an in- stitution himself. It is therefore through an awareness of these things that we proudly dedicate the I97S CHOW ANOKA to MR. ROBERT W. BROWN. Prelude 9 Changes . . . Each of us have gone through many in our lifetime, but now is the most important time of change in our life. A change that will allow us to come out of college prepared to meet the world knowing we each have something worthwhile to offer. We are learning to ' ' fE 10 Prelude . . . be an individual, stand on our own two feet, improve ourselves, make our decisions, do our own thing! t Prelude 11 w% . . . recognize our fellow students, help one another, work together as a unified team. Prelude 13 14 Prelude . . . become involved with others, give of our selves to one another, enjoy all the good times and cope with all the bad. Prelude 15 1 ' Population 16 Population The student body was made up of many different kinds of people: blacks, whites, freaks, jocks, residents and commuters, all of us contributing a part of ourselves. Our thoughts and our actions were what made Chowan College the place it was. We learned to give and take and share equally. A little of our privacy was given up as a result of living so close together but we learned so much from each other that it was all worth while. Sometimes our differences led to clashes and sometimes they brought us together. Some of our acquaintances af- fected our lives deeply and will never be forgotten. Others will never be remembered. And who knows how many of our friends we ' ll ever see again. . . To always keep these people fresh in our minds, we present to you the human population of Chowan College. Why else would we cheerfully get up at 8:00 each morning and work ourselves to a frazzle by the end of each day? With this in mind our faculty and staff worked diligently in preparing lectures, tests and other learning activiteis which would make our goal a little more interesting. But as the economy crisis affected us all, we soon learned that some of the familiar, friendly faces would not be returning the following fall. So here preserved for all time are the faculty members of the 1974-75 academic year. Practical Procedures Dr. ' Bruce £ Whitaker Practical Procedures In March, 1957, Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker was elected by the Board of Trustees as the 18th President of Chowan College, and assumed those responsibilities on May 15, 1957. Since that time. Dr. Whitaker has been an example to students, faculty, and staff alike as he strives to maintain his pledge to uphold and promote academic excellence and the Christian concept of life. During the past 18 years, President Whitaker has provided the finest kind of leadership for the College during its period of greatest expansion, and his dreams and hopes of making a good college great have become a reality. Many of the hardships and details of building and ex- panding were worked out through the combined efforts of the Board of Trustees, the Board of Advisors, and President Whitaker. The results testify to the ability, experience, and un- derstanding he brought to these tasks. His service is significant in interperting to the Church and to the community the aims, ideals, and progress of the college for he has a thorough knowledge of the requirements of higher education in the needs of our own institution and he pursues diligently that course of action which promises the greatest good for Chowan College, its student body, and its staff. Dr. Whitaker takes pride and pleasure in the achievements of the college family whether it be students, faculty, or staff and encourages all with whom he deals to develop their best talents. He expects of others no more than he demands of himself in discipline and dedication. He is known throughout North Carolina and in many, many other states for the zeal with which he tells the Chowan College story, and his benefit to this institution and on the national level is incalculable. We are indeed proud to be a part of an institution which has Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker serving as President of the College. McCraW 134 Practical Procedures Practical Procedures 135 ' Pastimes 136 Pastimes What would college life be without them? We found plenty of things to do to idle away our time! The Student Government Association, which picked up after a slow beginning, sponsored one concert each semester, with the fall concert featuring Brownsville Station, and the concert for spring was Charlie Daniels and Cowboy. One dance each month featured a variety of bands and also a variety of themes. The Fifties Dance held in the early spring was a tremendous success, with students dressed in the popular attire of the 1950s, and also a costume Holloween Dance proved a good occasion. In ad- dition to these activities, the SGA sponsored many free movies on campus. The remainder of our entertainment was derived from our own imagination, with businesses in the downtown area offering a dance each week. Inflation hit us also, with the cost of those things we enjoy rising along with almost everything else. There were frequent parties at the recreation area, at the pits and at other town spots we had claimed as our own. Of course, there were the traditional Homecoming and Spring Festival activities, both of which were large successes. There were fall days when a few rambunksious students took it upon themselves to bury fellow students in piles of leaves which had covered the campus, and there were also winter trips to the ice skating rink in Greenville which af- forded many of us an opportunity to learn a new pastime. Faculty Advisor. The Student National Education Association involves students in the search for answers to questions of what is worth learning and what are the best methods for learning it, questions that have puzzled Americans since they first determined to educate everybody, not just the aristocratic few. SNEA members have a chance to do something. They are needed as teachers ' aids in the local schools: classes are overloaded; intelligence levels vary drastically and many- youngsters need individual instruction; directors are needed on the playgrounds. And Chowan students are enthusiastically welcomed by the children because the students are young-more like older brothers and sisters instead of teachers. The club also gives members an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with students from other colleges, because SNEA is the student division of the National Education Association, represented in this state by the North Carolina Association of Educators. In the spring, representatives from all North Carolina colleges and universities (Chowan is the only junior college in the organization) hold a convention which includes a dinner meeting, the election of state officers, a joint meeting with NCAE members, and social activities In addition to exchanging ideas with students from other colleges, members of SNEA receive the weekly and monthly publications of both state and national parent organizations, which present the ever- changing ideas of Americans-educators, parents, social commentators, and national leaders-on what should be done about educational policies and methods, and report what ' s new in schools of the fifty states and other countries. The parent organizations also offer students many of the privileges available to professional members, including thrifty tours of foreign countries, where a member can do some firsthand investigation of how other countries manage education- that is, of course, if the member has the time and money to satisfy his curiosity. Participation 261 Chortan College Qfioir Membership in the college choir is open to all students who are in- terested in choral music. Ministerial Tilliance The Chowan College Ministerial Alliance is composed of those students who are preparing themselves for a profession as ministers of the Christian Gospel. As such, the purpose of the organization is to provide a forum for the sharing of the mutual needs and concerns of pre-ministerial students, and to afford opportunities for engaging in ministry during one ' s student days. The Alliance has met bi-weekly throughout 1974- 75 — usually with a faculty member or a local pastor sharing some phase of the minister ' s life and work as the program for the occasion. Members of the Alliance have maintained a weekly devotional series over radio station WRCS, Ahoskie. The group has also sponsored and con- ducted devotional services on Wednesday af- ternoons for personnel on the maintenance staff of the college. Two of the Alliance members have served during the year as full-time pastors of churches in Northampton County, North Carolina, and Greensville County, Virginia. Apart from these functions, all the members are encouraged to maintain private devotions and Bible study, as well as becoming involved in the various facets of service available through the broader ministry of the Baptist Student Union - Campus Christian Fellowship. Officers for the Ministerial Alliance for 1974-75 have included: Robert Walker. President; John Carrington. Vice-President; and Robert Wayne Vardell, Secretary. Chaplain Taylor has served as adviser to the organization, with Dr. Earl Parker sen nig most of the members as academic adviser. 272 Participation Sociology Club The Sociology Club is made up of Sociology students and other persons interested in social issues, with the purpose of the club, as stated in the Constitution, to make students more aware of the impact which society has upon their lives, and conversely to show how individuals may have some influence upon society. The Sociology Club for 1974-75 are, left to right, seated: Frank Lucas and Joan Ridgeway. Standing: David Adcamp, Dr. John Gosnell, Faculty Advisor; Denise Cartoe, Lisa Sellers, Marvin Nick Eike, George C. Scott and Matt Wentz. Programs held during the year included a talk by a state patrolman, a discussion of drug abuse, and films on abortion and burglary. Projects included volunteer services through the Chowanoke Area Development Association, sponsoring a white elephant sale which netted funds for food for the needy at Thanksgiving time, collection ot aluminum for re- cycling and helping with the Child Development Center in Ahoskie. Members are also eligible for the trip to Washington to visit Congressmen and sit in on Congressional committee hearings, as well as visit other points of interest in the nation ' s Capitol. Officers for the year were Frank Lucas, President; David Adams, Vice-President; Joan Ridgeway, Secretary-Treasurer; and Libby Kanipe, Assistant Secretary. Kience Chh The purpose of the Chowan Science Club is to sponsor activities both on and off campus, for those students who have an interest in the science related fields. Club activities in the past included con- struction of a nature trail through Chowan Forest, glass collec- tions, and scrap paper drives. The club ' s purpose is a two-fold one: 1) to make people aware of the importance of recycling; and, 2) to use the proceeds of projects to purchase needed equipment for the Science Depart- ment. Membership of 1974-75 Science Club Participation 273 Student Newspaper Writing and editing stories, preparing page layouts, setting type, proofreading, paste-up of pages, shooting the negatives, stripping the negatives into flats, burning plates, printing the paper and finally, distribution of the paper. These are just a few of the processes and procedures that go into the production of a newspaper in this fast moving age of technology. As technology in the printing industry continues to grow, a need for practical work experience for Chowan ' s printing student was seen. In order to fill this need the first student newspaper. The Daily Chowanian, began production on October 29, 1959. Its editorial content consisted almost entirely of Associated Press news reports. In 1967 students of Chowan College were asked to submit their ideas for changing the name of the school newspaper, with the name Smoke Signals being chosen and the first issue rolled off the press in October of that year. The theme of the newspaper was also changed at this time, with more emphasis placed on stories concerning the Chowan campus community with articles and features of interest to students. Today Smoke Signals serves a dual purpose. Its continues to provide ex- perience in printing production for graphic arts and photography as well as serving as a medium for expressing opinions of the student body on popular topics. Smoke Signals also serves as a show case for drawings, prints, cartoons, poems, photographs and feature stories prepared Heading the Smoke Signals staff are. Seated is Miss Rebecca Workman, Editor of the student newspaper. by students in the various departments. The success of the 1974-75 newspaper is largely due to the contribution of various individuals, clubs, college departments and faculty members who have assisted in this year ' s production. Special commendations are due the faculty advisor, Miss Marianne Pugh, and the School of Graphic Arts. Serving as editor for 1974-75 was Beckie Workman of Marion, N.C., Associate editors were Theresa Pike of Mur- freesboro, and Mike Patterson of Knox- ville, Tennessee. To be eligible for membership in Alpha Pi Epsilon. a student must be outstanding in all college work; a B average, or better, on all academic work must be attained. In selecting candidates for membership, the society seeks young people of character, intelligence, leadership, scholarship, and superior competence in secretarial sub- jects. The ultimate purpose of Alpha Pi Epsilon is to prefessionalize the status of the college-trained secretary. To accomplish this, it endeavors to send young men and women of the highest ideals into the business world, equipped with keen intelligence and a mastery of their skills. Alpha Pi Chapter, Alpha Pi Epsilon, enjoys the status of being a very active and outstanding organization on the campus of Chowan College, and its members have brought national recognition to the chapter and to Chowan College. Students have competed for the Florence Manning Scholarship Award , a national Secretarial Science ' Competition, for the past eleven years. For eight years, a student of Alpha Pi Chapter has placed in the top five. Alpha Pi Chapter undertakes many projects — some of these are: (1) Annual Scholarship Award. A yearly scholarship award of $50 is given to the two-year Secretarial Administration or Business Education student who maintains the highest academic average at the end of two years of study at Chowan College. The organization engages ' First in Scholarship, Eeaiership ani Cooperation in several money-making projects in order to raise money for this scholarship. (2) Professional Programs. Alpha Pi Chapter, Alpha Pi Epsilon, may serve as hostess for professional programs designed for all students in the Department of Business, such as sponsoring a well-known personality in a buiness specialty to appear on campus. (3) Service Projects. Projects that will be beneficial to the entire Chowan College student body are sponsored by Alpha Pi Chapter. (4) Chapel-Assembly Programs. Chapel- Assembly programs are a vital part of campus life. Members of the organization may elect to participate in a designated chapel-assembly program. (5) Social Ac- tivities. Alpha Pi Chapter members recognize that the whole person must not only be academically oriented, but socially and morally, as well. With this realization, many social activities are planned. (6) Annual Fall Initiation. A formal initiation is held in the Fall, by in- vitation, to qualified students; the Formal Candlelight Initation is followed by a Banquet Dinner. (7) Annual Fall Reception. Alpha Pi Chapter may sponsor, in conjunction with Phi Beta Lambda, a Fall Reception for business students and business faculty. (8) Annual Homecoming Reception. On Homecoming Day at Chowan College, current members of the organization will serve as hostesses at a Homecoming Reception. All former members, beginning with the 1957 charter members, are invited. Activities throughout the year have included weekly meetings for worship and fellowship, occasional group Bible studies, and weekly prayer services conducted in the Askew Student Union lounge. Devotional services have also been led by members of the BSU-CCF on Thursdays of each week for the employees of the college cafeteria. Bi- weekly gatherings for worship, fellowship, and recreation have been conducted with and for the residents of Pinewood Manor Rest Home, near Ahoskie, North Carolina. On the State level, many members of the local BSU-CCF have been involved in the broader programs and ministries of the North Carolina Baptist Student Union. Such in- volvemnet has included participation in State conventions and conferences, service on committees of the Statewide organization, and the raising of a rather substantial pledge ($500.00) towards the underwriting of the total budget of the Student Summer Missions project of the North Carolina Baptist Student Union. Most of the monies raised for the project by Chowan students has come through gifts to the four Youth revival teams which have been maintained by the BSU-CCF this year, and which have participated in conducting several weekend youth emphases throughout the area. Other funds for Summer Missions and or to meet the local expenses of the BSU-CCF have been raised through car washes, candy sales, and a BSU-CCF Slave Market. According to Chaplain Taylor, the Baptist Student Union - Campus Christian Fellowship for 1974-75 has been one of the most active and involved groups of its kind with which he has served as adviser throughout his years at Chowan. Much of the success of the group can be attributed to the able and energetic leadership of the sudent officers for the year : Ernest J . Etheridge. President ; Charles Lee Ferebee, Vice-President; Janet Copeland, Secretary; and David Hudson, Member-At-Large to the State Officers ' Council of the North Carolina Baptist Student Union. 276 Participation Delta Vsi Omega Delta Psi Omega is an honorary dramatic fraternity for those students who do a high standard of work in dramatics. Hargett Street Raleigh, N. C. 71 Special Onbute . to an elect lady Daisy Lou Mixon, wife of former Chowan College president, Forest Orion Mixon has made a total in- vestment of herself for the past 24 years, and is admired, respected, and loved by the entire Chowan College family-students, fellow faculy members, and administrative staff. As Chairman of the Department of Religion and Philosophy, she is held in high esteem by those who serve with her. She is aggresive enough not to be afraid to express her opinions, yet shy enough to do it with tact and restraint. She is modest, unassuming, gets the job done competently, is energetic and efficient. She speaks quietly, but with confidence, is a real Christian friend. fairminded and un- derstanding. On the other hand her merry blue eyes betray a quick and ready wit. Mrs. Mixon makes continous personal preparation and refuses to condone intellectual mediocrity. She reads widely and is a scholarly thinker. In the classroom she is always a teacher-demanding, inspiring, stimulating. Her profound un- derstanding of the Bible, her personal commitment to its teachings, and her own love of learning permeate the classroom. Without apology she imparts to students what she herself is in character, interest and devotion. The investment of her life at Chowan has paid rich dividends, for she has influenced countless people with her unfailing loyalty and dedication to Chowan College. 296 Fostlude . . and a stately gentleman When Chowan College re-opened its doors to student in the fall of 1948, a few dedicated faculty members recognized the dream of Christian Higher Education and accepted this dream as a personal challenge for their lives. Many of them had that very summer driven miles over surrounding counties and into southern Virginia enrolling young people for the new student body. One such man was Marion Eugene Williams. Professor Williams began his tenure of service at Chowan twenty-seven years ago. Since that time he has taught French, Spanish, English, and United States History to thousands of Chowanians. He has con- scientiously served on college committees, headed various efforts toward improvement, and remained faithful to the ideals of this great institution. It is in the classroom, however, that his greatest impact has been made and for which students across the land will remember him. In the classroom Professor Williams became a true master teacher, the desk being his pulpit, the blackboard his field, and the valuable sermons taught there will continue to echo around the world in years to come. He was a born teacher,. He knew his subjects well and he always remained anxious to impart his knowledge with those fortunate young people who came to him. To Professor Williams teaching was a joy and his en- thusiasm was vital and contageous. It would be fitting to say that he had the patience of Job, the understanding of Soloman, and the endurance of the early Christians. The mark which he has made upon the life and development of Chowan College may never be measured, nor does it need to be. In the lives of thousands across the land may be felt the influence of this great teacher. They will be stronger because of him, they will speak more clearly, and they will agree with Tennyson in becoming a part of those whom they have met. It is with sincere appreciation that Chowan College bids farewell this year to one of its greatest, most dedicated and masterful teachers, Marion Eugene Williams. . . . Jor jobs Well done I Postlude 297 Sf Another year has come and gone . . . and Chowan has completed its 126th year of service . . . there have been good times and bad ones . . and following is a Wrap-up of 1974-75. Changes-our hopes were up at the beginning of the year. Spirit was high, the students were united and we had an SGA president that was willing to do what he could to bring about reasonable changes in the social life at Chowan. Unfortunately the students way of bringing about changes and the administrations way appeared to be two entirely different methods. Action was the students way and committees and lengthy discussions were the ad- ministrations ' . Due to this conflict Drew Rivenbark w as unable to set any changes into motion and resigned as president of the SGA. Cathy Challenor took Drew ' s place, becoming the first woman SGA president in Chnwan ' s history. Fall semester was disappointing as far as policy changes, but all in all. fun was had by almost everyone. The usual amount of parties, cookouts, and patronizing local entertainment places took place. Campus activities included football games, homecoming, dances, and a few SGA sponsored events, which many enjoyed. The drama club presented several plays which, if students missed, was to their loss, as this was the last year Chowan ' s drama department would be in existence. The annual trip to New York made by the Art Department, stirred excitement among the art students and turned out to be very successful and enjoyable. With the beginning of the Spring Semester, Chowan College, as well as many of the students, felt the nationwide economic depression. Many students were unable to return to college causing Mixon Hall and the second floor of Jenkins Hall to close. 298 Postlude In an effort to retain students and attract new ones, the administration asked each dorm to make a list of student grievances. Meetings were held, opinions exchanged and as a result, some changes came about. The curfew for women was extended, part of Green Hall was converted to a student center and a few changes were initiated in the cafeteria. Head residents changed places as Mrs. Martha Rock, Belk head resident, resigned and Mrs. Ruth Baker, Jenkins ' head resident moved over to take her place. Mrs. Dereathea Thompson moved to Jenkins. Due to the renovation of McDowell Columns. Chapel was not held in the spring. A worship service was held two days a week at the Askew Student Building. Also as a result of the renovation, the Spring Pageant was held in Squirrel Park on the day of Spring Festival so that even parents could attend and the carnival was presented in its usual manner. The spring concert featuring Charlie Daniels and Cowboy, scheduled to be held in the football stadium, was cancelled due to rain and many anxious students left disappointed. The concert was rescheduled for a later date. The Student Government planned a new spring activity called the Rites of Spring so the year drew to a close with fun and games. That was our year! For the sophomores who will learve Chowan there will be many memories of all the good and all the bad. As tradition goes we will look back on the good ole days at Chowan. For the fresh- men, there is another year of a lot of fun and many challenges to look forward to. Here ' s to Chowan, here ' s to changes. Here ' s to Chowan and changes. Postlude 299 Well another year has just passed before us. The staff, advisors, and I have tried to cover the year as completely as possible through pictures and copy. Many long and trying hours were spent in preparing this annua I. Without the cooperation of everyone, the task wou Id have been impossible. The Graphic Arts Department deserves more thanks than I could express. They did an excellent printing job and we really owe everything to them. I feel that this is one of the better yearbooks Chowan College has had and I sincerely hope that all of you enjoy it. I would like to thank those who contributed their time and talent in creating this annual. My special thanks goes to my good friend Betsey Bauer for all the artwork included. I know it took a lot of time and hard work. Dawn Bell Editor State UA.ll Postlude 301
