King 20 Since 1964 she has devoted her teaching talents to Chowan College. Her love for Chowan and dedication for its students are evident to all. It is for these reasons and so many more that the students of Chowan College dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Jean F. King. In this way we wish to thank her for her understanding, for her dedication to the students and the Chowan Family , and for her kindness to all. Thank you Mrs. King. 21 It has become tradition at Chowan in the past for the Yearbook to be dedicated to an outstanding member of the faculty or administration. It is the dream of each yearbook staff to set tradition aside and aim for the new with hopes of making their ' ideas tradition of the future. Instead of choosing this person ourselves, the staff this year let the student body choose, by ballot in chapel, the faculty member whom they felt diserved this honor in hopes of making tradition. Here are the members of our faculty and administration who have had this honor in the past seven years. ROSS A. CADLE - 1965 Director of Admissions MR. Students will also receive the benefit of an en- vironmental study area, eleven modern classrooms, lecture hall, library and resource area. The three-story, 43,000 square foot facility will be located to the rear of McDowell Columns building and will join Robert Marks Hall as the second major classroom facility at the college. Based on bids, which were received earlier this year, the cost of the facility will be ap- proximately $1.2 million equipped. A Mission Possible development program was completed to raise $1 million toward the cost of con- struction of the new building. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the structure was held on Monday, February 21. The public was invited to the ceremoney, and was held following a joint meeting of the Board of Trustees and Board of Advisors in the Whitaker Library. The new building will replace the overcrowded and underequipped Green Hall, center of the science program which was constructed in 195S when Chowan ' s enrollment was 250. The college now has an enrollment of 1,533 in the fall of 1971 and officials have declared the present building inadequate to accommodate the present enrollment. 162 V IM: -kmjgf.. There are only a few who realize how many student hours actually go into the publication of the annual. It is the hope of this year ' s staff that the new few pages might give a better understanding as to how THE CHOWANOKA is put together. In the fall semester, the Graphic Arts Department selects two editors to head the annual staff. As editors, they receive scholarships from the college and are responsible for the coordination of all operations involving the book. The Graphic Arts Department also chooses a Production Editor who is responsible for all stripping and printing operations. After a semester and a half of hard work, the printed pages are folded and shipped to the binder, where the finished annual receives its cover. The Graphic Arts students who helped in the printing of THE CHOWANOKA deserve the gratitude and respect of each student and faculty member and many thanks from the Editors for a job well done! a job well done! 164 Editors Roger McJilton and Mark Klevence discuss layout with Graphic Arts Department Chairman Herman Gatewood. It is Roger and Mark ' s responsibility to oversee all yearbook operations. Yearbook Advisor William Sowell discusses some of the many problems involving production with Mr. Herman Gatewood. :m k:T Mr. Perry and Mr. Sowell show that yearbook production involves much work and some play. 165 PHOTOGRAPHERS Frank Dunton Randy Benson Lyne Dennis 166 After pictures are developed and sized, they are taken to the copy room where they are made into halftones. Each year the club presents an assembly of Spanish songs, music and dances. This year the Spanish Club presented its program entitled Mexican Fiesta to high schools in Virginia and North Carolina reaching approximately 6,000 high school seniors. On other occasions Spanish Club members represented the college on television by way of the Mildred Alexander Show and the Peggy Mann Show. For Spring Festival each year, the Spanish Club has a Mexican Taco Booth. Hargett Street Raleigh, N. C 270 Their smiles, their cheerful looks make one think Is this what life is all about . . . This feeling inside is felt in dreams. But dreams go wandering off in the night. They walk along without a care, with a glow of spring. With each and all their happiness to share. To reach this chord is one ' s life ' s hope. The harmony inside. Running through a honey dew field of rippened wheat Or walking along the golden sandy beaches of the ocean, This feeling inside is refreshing to all. Looking up to a cloudy blue sky to see only a single Bird inflight, or watching the waters of a river flowing by . . . and laughing at something that makes one cry. Lying on one ' s back, looking up at a full moon On a clear night, and trying to think what ' s right. These feelings inside, these hopes, dreams bring. Happiness and peace to all mankind. The tide comes in, the tide goes out . . . The world with troubles comes in, harmony goes out. . . Windy it was this day in my mind. .IT 271 Whitaker Library Chowan College Do not take from library
