Two Chowan professors, Mr. William Sowell and Mr. Charles Helms were the co-chairmen of the March of Dimes campaign in Hertford County. It was their idea to have a student march and gather- ing to raise funds for this worthy cause. The activities began with the kidnapping of Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker, President of the College. Dr. Whitaker ' s ransom was $75. This ransom was to be paid by students, faculty and staff of the college. In the afternoon students staged a march on campus. They carried signs which bore slogans in support of the campaign. After the march, students met on the football field for a car bash and pie throwing contest. The car bash was a success in that it provided a tension release as well as raising funds for the campaign. The wreck- ed cars were decorated with the names of favor- ite faculty members. Each bash cos ' 10 cents. The pie throw contest was fun as we as profit- able. The targets of the messy cream pies were Billy Graham, campus security officer and Roy Whitley, assistant cafeteria manager. Each pie thrown netted 25 cents for the fund. The evenings events were topped with a dance in the gym featur- ing the Huckleberry Mudflat combo. The total contributions from Chowan College to the March of Dimes campaign was $200. This was one riot that proved profitable in all respects. 45 Dr, Bruce E, U hitaker President of the College Dr. B. Franklin Lou e, Jr. Dean of the College R. This program leads to an Associate in Arts degree as well as a Diploma. The students begin their thirty three month program at Chowan College. They take regular college courses and begin their nurs- ing experience at nearby Roanoke Chowan Hospital. After four semesters plus one summer session at Chowan, they then go to Duke Hospital in Durham, N.C. to complete their nursing experi ence. Here they remain for twelve months under the supervision of Chowan College faculty members stationed at Duke. When they have satisfactorily completed the programs requirements, they are awarded the A. A., degree from Chowan, and are eligiable to take the State Board of Nursing examination. This program is completely under the direct ion of Chowan College, and is adminis- tered by The Chairmen of the Department of Nursing Mrs. Almira Ockerman, R.N., B.S., and M.S. Contrary to popular belief, the Braves were a good match for this four-year school, and this was proven when the Braves moved up from a losing score to win the ball game in the last nine seconds of play. The final score? A beautiful 16-14 tally for Chowan. Next on Chowan ' s list was strong Baltimore Junior College. Chowan tied this fine team by 14-14. With a tie and a win under their belt, Chowan ' s Braves traveled to Keyser, West Virginia to test their skill against Potomac State College. After a superb ball game, the Braves brought home the bacon with a victory of 29-12. After having had a game forfeited to them by Croft Junior College, the- Braves traveled to Ferrum Junior College looking for a win. The Braves played a trying ball game, and returned home with their first loss behind them. The game had ended by a score of 24-6 against Chowan. Greg Hartranft Dan Dayvault on a power play against E. C. Frosh. Donald Patton Lee D. Copeland Nick Shook v. Chip Burden Bob Dagenhart Starting with the Ferrum game Chowan seemed to go into a short losing streak. Both Lees McRae College and the East Carolina Freshman team took advantage of Chowan during this time, as Lees McRae won by eight points with an end result of 21-13, and E.C.U. Frosh. won with a tally of 33-27. With only three games left in the season, the Braves went ahead to make a good football season for Chowan. Montgomery Junior College was the next school to be brought down by the Braves, and they were crushed by a terrific score of 20-6. In the next ball game scheduled for Chowan, Wesley Junior College did not have such an easy team to beat. After pulling ahead in the first half of the game, Wesley won over the Braves by a 41-14 tally. The season ended on a happy note for the Chowan Braves when they played the Davidson College Freshman team. Davidson played a good ball game, but could not match the Braves. Chowan won with a 7-6 final score. Overall, the Braves had a good football season. One of the main reasons Chowan ' s team was not as good as was expected is that three of the five starters of the team were dropped during or before the season. Harry Flip Flippmg, the lead- ing rebounder of this region was dropped before the season began, and so was Jack Ross. Jack was our top freshman prospect. We also suffered the loss of Mike Bennett from our team during the season. The loss of these three of our best players was the thing that hurt our season the most. Had it not have been for this loss Chowan ' s Braves would have been an absolute top notch basketball team. One of the players who showed the most im- provement throughout the season was Clifton Faison, one of our freshmen. Chowan hopes to have him on the squad next year. has been Tod McConnell. With much improve- ment in his game, Tod has added a lot to the per- formance of Chowan ' s basketball team. He has been one of the leading scorers and rebounders through the whole season. The only drawbacks the Brave ' s squad had this season were slowness in the backcourt and short- ness in front court. This is another combination against the Braves. There were no starters taller than six feet four inches. This may have cost the Braves the extra few points needed to win some of the home games, as three games were lost only by one or two points. Bigger boys are being recruited for next year, as are some new guards, so Chowan should be one of the top teams in the region in 1970-71. They led the Braves on to some exciting victories, and kept a strong heart after Chow an ' s defeats. The cheerleaders worked with dili- gence and skill, and put forth great effort for Chowan ' s athletic organizations. The squad began the year with nine girls, and finished the year with five. They were Becky Hamby, Head Cheerleader from ' orktown, Va: Jill Wagoner, McLean, Va: Debby Pickett. Richmond Va: Judi Morrisette, Vir- ginia Beach, Va: and Judy Thomas from Lawrence- ville. Va. After a year of service to Chowan the girls had these words to say; We would like to thank the whole student body for their support throughout the year. 134 Mrs. Janet Collins Advisor to the Cheerleaders CHEERLEADER REFLECTIONS First row: Pete Carpenter, third and outfielder; James Parker, catcher; Steve Driscoll, second baseman; Leroy Beamon, outfielder; Second row: Louis Hildreth, pitcher; Doug (Gus) Roberson, first baseman; Fred Mclean, shortstop; Don James, shortstop; Thomas Graham, pitcher; and backing up the team is Coach Hawkins. Pitching over home plate is letterman Louis Hildreth. m BASEBALL BASEBALL REFLECTIONS The Chowan baseball team had ten returning members this season, nine of whom were lettermen. Three of these returning members pitched for the team, two played first and second base, two were outfielders, one a short- stop and one a catcher. All of these men together helped to make the baseball team one of Chowan ' s best. The Brave ' s baseball team this season was, according to Coach Hawkins, a well balanced ball club. We were a little stronger and a better team than we were last year. The team had several promising new players, including four pitchers, one catcher, and two outfielders. Since Chowan ' s golf teams in the last three years have been on top most of the time, no great change was expected in quality of per- formance this season. One of the top pros - pects that helped the team to gain high stand- ards for 1970 was George Fisher, a past Virginia high school golf champion. With these fine evidences of ability at the beginning of the season Jim Garrison, the golf coach, stated his prediction in this way: Our team looks good for another strong year in golf. We hope to find our way to the national tournament. Our team this year is just as fine and maybe better than last year ' s. Such were the hopes of all for this year ' s golf team. John Perkins demonstrates his putting ability. Chip Sullivan follows thru after teeing off while others look on. 139 Lonnle Rightmjer follows through for a good return. The members of the Chowan College Tennis team are, from left to right; Bridger L. Hodsden, Ronald E. Adams (driving), Paul F. Silver, Jack D. Hallett Jr., Gerald W. Burgess, Carter W. Jones, James E. Morton, Hugh E. Knickerbocker Jr., John T. McCloud, and below is Lonnie J. Rightmier. TENNIS Tennis started out well for Chowan this year with a top team. All the tennis players were quite experienced at the sport when the semester began, and the experience our men possessed proved itself in some exciting matches. Chowan tied Ferrum Jr. College last year tor the regional championship, and looked forward to putting that team out of competition this year. There was a twelve-match schedule this year for Chowan. Among the adversaries were Christopher New- port College, Virginian Wesley College, Louisburg College, Ferrum Jr. College, Mt. Olive College, and Lenoir College. One of the top prospects at the beginning of the season was freshman Jim Morton. Another fine player was return- ing sophomore Tom Garner. These two players performed well against the other schools, both being able to play singles or doubles. Chowan was able to have more tennis players this season, practicing even at night. This was made possible by the new lighted courts built at the beginning of the year. The team could practice only during the day ' i pre- vious years because of lack of lights for night play. 140 Practice makes for well worn equipment. ASSOCIATION Chowan College recognizes the educational value of student co-operation and leadership. The admin- istration and faculty delegate to the student leader- ship groups the supervision and control of certain affairs. This is done to the degree that the students are able and willing to assume the responsibility involved. Students are encouraged to accept respon- sibility for the improvement of conduct in the dormi- tories, cafeteria, student union building, and in other areas of vital interest to them. This is imple- mented on a democratic basis by a Men ' s Council and a Women ' s Judiciary. Students elected to mem- bership in these organizations jointly constitute the all-campus btudent Senate, which is headed by the president and other student body officials. Faculty members selected by the administration serve as advisers for these groups. Lee Dunn, Desperado , before the kidnap- ping of Dr. Whitaker. 186 STUDENT SENATE S.G.A.
