U- ' -m Dr. Pierce spends many hours in her office preparing lectures and counciling her students. In iifmortam Catherine Ann Massey May, 1949 -• December, 1967 It is not growing like a tree In bulk, doth make Man better be Or standing long an oak, three hundred year To fall a log at last, dry, bald, and sere; A lily of a day Is fairer far in May, Although it fall and die that night- It was the plant and flower of Light. In small portions we just beauties see; And in short measures life may perfect be. — Jonson — Michael Obler January, 1949 -- October, 1967 In iMFmnrtam Mr. Walter Moose August 12, 1918— March 11, 1968 On March 11. 1968, the hearts of the entire Chowan College family were saddened by the death of Mr. Walter Moose, a distinguished member of the college faculty. Life! we ' ve been long together Through pleasant and through cloudy weather; ' Tis hard to part when friends are dear; Perhaps t ' will cost a sigh, a tear; Then steal away, give little warning, Choose thine own time; Say not, Good night, but in some brighter clime Bid me Good morning. Christian Focus Week affords the opportunity to examine our per- spectives, to recognize challenges, and to set worthy objectives for our lives. For this purpose, a group of able leaders were invited to our campus, whose achievements and experiences qualify them as interpreters of the urgent needs of our world, demanding the services of trained, intellegent, and dedicated young people. Students enjoyed the opporiunity of chatting with our guest on a variety of subjects during the week. One of the most popular aspects of the week was the nightly bull sessions in the dorms. Mrs. JoAlice Halsell visited some of the classes to deliver guest lectures. 36 Spring Festival Court ■Emily Clare Williams Queen of Spring 137 Spring Festival Court m : Miss Linda Nixon Freshman Princess Miss Eniriia Brooks Freshman Attendant 38 Spring Festival Court If H Miss Sue Gardner Freshman Attendant Miss Carol Townsend Sophomore Attendant 39 Spring Festival Court Lli .iliflli I iMiig ioiie Sophomore Attendant Miss Jenny P rgus ' )ii Sophomore Attendant 140 Spring Festival Court ' !.! ■• l4 i Miss Nancy Turnage Sophomore Attendant Miss Teresa Batton Freshman Attendant Spring Festival Pageant Spring Festival Pageant W? Compiling a book filled with memories which will last a lifetime has been an illusive goal at times but. we on the staff feel this goal has been achieved. The extensive work involved in producing such a treasure as this can be known only by those who have had first-hand experience of participating in it. Hours upon hours have been spent in making pictures, writing copy, putting the right cut-lines with the proper pictures, and many hours spent in layout and design not to mention the time spent in printing this hook. At times tempers were frayed and deadlines violated; but when the entire job was finished there was a feeling of satisfaction in a ta,sk well done. We, the staff, deeply appreciate the honor and the encouragement given to us by our fellow students and by members of the staff. We sincerely hope all of you will be please l with this edition of The Chowanoka. 156 The 1968 Chowanoka Staff Linda Nixon Literary Editor Preston Hunter Production Editor Rose Drake Organizations Editor Cindv Hill Organizations Editor John Rider Atheletics Editor Janice Collie Copy Editor William Sowell Advisor Charles Stevens Advisor TheChowanian Staff John McSweeney Executive Director Herman Gatewood Managing Editor Harvey Harris Literary Editor ■P William Sowell Production Advisor The Chowanian is an award winning newspaper designed, printed and published by the faculty and students of the School of Graphic Arts.
