The School of Graphic Arts has a physical plant valued at more than a quarter of a million dollars. This year alone the school has added a Heidelberg press, which is the fastest and most accurate letterpress made, a copying camera, which is precision built and operated by one central electronic control panel, and an Elektron Linotype, which is the ultimate in automation and the fastest linecasting machine in the world. The School of Graphic Arts produced this year a complete 360 page history of the College, the monthly CHOWANIAN, the CHOWANOKA, and all other printing used by the college. JOHN McSWEENEY Chairman School of Graphic Arts WILLIAM SOWELL Instructor HERMAN GATEWOOD Instructor Teletype perforators punch tape to operate Linotype machines auto- matically, which speeds up the production of newspapers. Graphic Arts ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Much credit for this 1963-64 CHOWANOKA is due to the hard work, imagination and preserver- ance of Charles Phillip Stevens, the associate editor. He spent many hours at .night and over week-ends preparing copy, layouts, and on the actual printing production of the CHOWANOKA. He is a freshman in the School of Graphic Arts. Among others who deserve special mention are: Roby Patton (Pat) Shuffler, who is responsible for most of the photographs, other than individuals; Elbert Hubbard Arledge, Jr., and James Edward Boughan, both of whom put in many extra hours to make the CHOWANOKA possible. — Faculty Advisors The students operate the most modern Linotype machines and learn all phases of typography.
