WHITAKER edication Not an easy teacher, but an excellent one . . . takes a friendly interest in all his students ... a good guy and a good sport ... a real scholar . . . versatile . . . different . . . efficient . . . This is how students describe the head of our Science Department. For five years he has been at Chowan College, and both the college and the community have benefited greatly from his work. A better Christian friend and teacher would be hard to find. In the classroom the stu- dents, whom he calls his children, are amused as well as informed by his dry wit and interesting lectures. Because we like, admire, and respect his so much, we, his children, gratefully dedicate the 1961 Chowanoka to Professor Lionel L. Bishop Dean Of The College J. How do you feel ? U l isf Bif Me Broum Jjdf Each autumn the Brown Lady pays a frightening visit to the Chowan campus. According to legend, she is the ghost of a former student who searches constantly for her lost lover. Announced by an unearthly scream in the girls ' dormitories, she drags her victims out of bed for a cold, pre-dawn walk. Each girl is blindfolded and introduced personally to the Brown Lady by feeling her eyes, teeth, ears, liver, and blood. Then, after seeing the dear old Lady lying in her casket, who wouldn ' t believe that she is real? Wrong Step! The line up. Smile at the Brown Lady ! Brown Lady Feels like eggs! Lost! Don ' t be afraid! Why so sad? ■ Best Dressed? Look at Me ! l Vaif On Rat Day eachyear, the law-abiding sophomores, eager to see that the freshmen conform to tradition, keep rats busy rendering various services. Poor unfortunate rats who fail to dress and act according to requirements have only themselves to blame if they wind up in the dreaded Rat Court, where vigilant sop- homores see that justice is done.
