Chowan College MURFREESBORO, NORTH CAROLINA Home of THE BRAVES THE 1958 CHOWANOKA TOWARD NEW HORIZONS ' ■ i m In the belief that this has been a truly momentous year in Chowan College ' s history, the 1958 Chowanoka Staff has selected, Toward New Horizons, as the Yearbook theme. The many and significant steps toward an ever-widening horizon that Chowan has taken this year, have inspired us to capture in the pages of this Yearbook, something of her future place of leadership in the field of Christian Higher Education. Because of the initiation and success of the Enlargement- Development Effort, Chowan College will soon be in a construction program which will see the seven proposed buildings become realities. Sketches of these proposed buildings will appear as division pages throughout the Yearbook. Chowan College now stands at the threshold of even greater service to the Northeastern North Carolina and Tidewater Virginia areas. Her steady advance Toward New Horizons will ever enable her to bring encouragement and assistance to the youth of these areas, as they move Toward New Horizons for themselves and for humanity. Bill Byrum Editor THE 1958 CHOWANOKA IS DEDICATED TO . . . Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker It is the men behind every movement who give it purpose and momentum. One of the men who has given such leadership to the Chowan College Enlargement-Development Pro- gram is our President, Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker. It is with gratitude and appreciation that we dedi- cate to President Whitaker, the 1958 Chowanoka. V. 19 The Braves opened their season in Ahoskie against a much larger ECC Jayvee eleven and gave the Baby Pirates a rock-em, sock-em battle before bowing by a 19-0 count. However, the game was much closer than the score indicates. The scrappy young Indians fumbled away numerous scoring opportunities and made the Pirates fight for every inch they gained. ROUGH, READY, VETERAN LINEMEN CHOWAN 13 - BULLIS PREP 7 The Braves home opener was played in a driving rain- storm. On the second play of the second quarter half- back J. C. Young dove over from the one-yard line for the first Indian tally. Lanny Roof capped a scoring drive in the third period by sprinting 6 yards around end into paydirt for the winning touchdown. The Braves vicious play up front was the difference in the two clubs. The hardcharging Indian line repeatedly stopped the high-powered Little Admiral backs when- ever the goal line was in danger. CHOWAN 7 - APPRENTICE SCHOOL 13 In their next outing, the Braves traveled to Newport News and dropped a close one to the rough and ready Apprentice School Shipbuilders. The Builders scored first but Lawerence Kearson put the Indians back in the game with a six-pointer which climaxed a 74-yard sustained drive. Hogan converted and the Braves went into the dressing room at the half on the long end of a 7-6 score. A costly Brave fumble on the first play following the second half kickoff gave the Shipbuilders an easy TD. The Indians threatened re- peatedly in the last two periods but never could cross the last white stripe again. Kneeling, Center Pat Warren and Tackle Kerry Cara- wan; Standing, End Phil Collins and Tackle Gordon Peoples. CHOWAN 7 - WINGATE 14 Wingate, ranked fourth among the nation ' s Junior Colleges, had to come from behind in the second half to defeat an aroused band of Braves in a game played on Wingate ' s home gridiron. The Braves led 7-0 at the half after John Hogan had sneaked over from the one and added the extra point with a place- kick. In the last half the powerful Wingate eleven began to move and put 14 points on the scoreboard while holding the Braves scoreless. It was a tough one for the Indians to lose for they had several other excellent opportunities to score; but they came home with a moral victory over the nationally-ranked Win- gate team. 76 RUGGED NEWCOMERS UP FRONT Kneeling, I to r. Guard Gary Henman, Tackle Jim Woodruff, Tackle Tommy Daughtry; Standing, End Jerry Bean, End Salvador Thomasson, Guard Bob Gotten. CHOWAN 7 - FORK UNION 34 In the annual R u r 1 1 a n Bowl Game at Deep Creek, Va., the Blue Devils of Fork Union Mili- tary Academy ran roughshod over the Braves. It v as just one of those nights when the Indians could do nothing right and the Cadets could do nothing wrong. The Fork Union backs— by far the best the Braves faced all sea- son—piled up tremendous yard- age and their human battering ram, fullback Lowell Vaught, was everybody ' s All American on that particular night. Clyde Morgan, the leader in an impotent Braves offense, scored the only Chowan tally on a 21 -yard gallop through center late in the final period. SHIFTY, SOPHOMORE BACKS Kneeling, I to r, Jimmy Parker and Clarence Lupton; Standing, Bill Steele, Floyd Davis and J. C. Young. 77 CHOWAN 12 - COLUMBIA PREP 6 The Braves ended their season in a blaze of glory as they outscrapped the gridiron warriors of Columbian Prep, Washington, D. C. It was a bruising homecoming battle from the opening whistle and the game was highlighted by savage play on the part of two well-coached lines. The Cadets got the game ' s first tally, but J. C. Young made it 6-6 just three minutes later when he went over from the one-yard line. Late in the third period the Braves wrapped it up when Carawan recovered a Prep fumble and Lanny Roof pitched a perfect strike into the waiting arms of Captain Phil Collins in the end zone for the winning touch- down. THE SCRAPPY BRAVE BACKS Kneeling, I to r: Roof, Kearson, F. Morgan, Mitchell, Griffin, Duell, Foster, H. Smith, Young, and Parker. Standing: Hooks, Edwards, Hogan, R. Sawyer, Davis, C. Morgan, M. Smith, Steele, Rober- son, and Phillips. Head Coach Ike Davis developed a potent offense from the fleet of backs pictured above. John Hogan, freshman quarterback from New Bern, was handling the team like a veteran when the season closed. Three fine and powerful fullbacks were a real joy to Coach Davis: Lawerence Kearson and Lanny Roof were consistent and dependable and Clyde Morgan was the squad ' s leading ground gainer for the sea- son. Halfbacks J. C. Young, Jimmy Foster and several others were constant break-away threats. The pass- ing of Jimmy Parker and the kicking of Bill Steele were other backfield highlights. 78 THE STALWART BRAVE LINEMEN Kneeling, I to r: Clyburn, Collins, Woodruff, Henman, Daughtry, Gotten, Peoples, Bean, and Kent. Standing: Wimbish, Dickerson, Swineford, Bailey, Warren, Compton, Martin, Harring- ton, Thompson, Coach Lloyd, and J. Sawyer. Assistant Coach Gig Lloyd handled the Chowan linemen pictured above. Although short on returning lettermen, he worked his prosects into one of the finest Junior College lines in the state. In the middle of the Brave line, center Pat Warren and guards Joe Bland, Gary Henman, and Bob Cotten were outstand- ing. At the tackle posts. Tommy Daughtry, Gordon Peoples, Kerry Carawan, and Jim Woodruff were the standouts. On the flanks, Phil Collins, Jerry Bean, Jim Martin, and pass-catching Salvador Thomasson were the shining lights. CHOWAN FRESHMEN 6 ELIZABETH CITY 13 The Baby Braves lost a close one to the Yellow Jackets who later won the state AA crown. Cho- wan scored first, but the Eliza- beth City boys put together two sustained drives of 67 and 68 yards for the win. The freshmen played this game after only eight days of practice. CHOWAN FRESHMEN 25 WASHINGTON HIGH 6 The freshmen Braves had only one other contest— a meeting with the strong Pam Pack at Washington. End Sally Thomas- son scored two of Chowan ' s four touchdowns; Billy Mitchell and Lawerence K e a r s o n got the others. Lanny Roof ' s 70-yard punt return was the game ' s highlight. 79 BUCKET Chowan 58 Med. They were a much tougher ball club than the won-loss record indicates, as their opponents across the state will testify. Left to right, Murphy Smith, Jerry Wrenn, Co-captain Phil Collins, Co-captain Dan Grif- fin and Vance Pittman. THE SQUAW BASKETEERS f These young ladies won 9 out of the 10 games they played against high-school, all-star, and junior college teams. Kneeling, left to right: Ruby Webb, Jessica Vann, Reba Hale, Margaret Strickland. Second row: Coach Jimmy Parker, Sandra Liverman, Joanne White, Vivian Pugh, Hilda Melton. Absent when picture taken: Pat Mocre and Loueen Bryant. 83 MEN OF THE DIAMOND n .n H - r . ? Kneeling, left to right: Joe Sumler, Ray Rose, James Foster, Jimmy Parker, Hunk Smith, John Hogan, Lawrence Kearson. Second row: Coach Lloyd, Vance Pittman, Richard Murray, Salvador Thomasson, Kenneth Odom, Manager Woody Hill. Third row: Jonas Edwards, Carroll Hawkins, Clyde Morgan, Murphy Smith, Coy Tillett, Joe Bland, Bill Steele. The Brave Baseballers have not played their first game and it is time to go to press with the Chowanoka. Therefore, no re- sults can be listed for the sched- ule shown on this page. The way the boys have performed in prac- tice thus far indicates that this year ' s nine will be one of Cho- wan ' s greatest baseball clubs.
