THE COLLEGE Jt Ia y idtoru and traditions FFFCiALLY October 11, 1848 is adhered to as Founder ' s Day for Chowan College, for it was on that day that the Baptists of the Chowan Association began the operation of the school, known then as Chowan Collegiate Institute. The Institute replaced the Banks School which began operation in 1882 and which in turn supplanted the Hertford Academy that was opened in 1794, and recei ed its charter from the state. Thus, the Founder ' s Day of Chowan is in reality 1794, marking the college as one of the oldest institutions in the nation. The first commencement was held on the present site in 1851. The campus then as now consists of 50 acres and has on it at present thirteen buildings, cen- tering around the four-story, majestic columned, colonial structure erected in 1857. Other buildings are the East building, erected 1906; the Science building, remodeled 1874; Hope Cottage, 1878; Stone Cottage, 1913; Scarborough House, 1924; Auditorium, 1923; Faith Cottage, sometime between 1897-1907; four cottages, 1950; president ' s home, 1950. All of the old buildings experienced a complete remodeling from 1948-1950. In 1852 the name Chowan Collegiate Baptist Institute was given to the school for girls only, but that year it was made co-educational; and until 1937 it was a senior college, but it was changed that year to a junior college. Chowan is old in tradition. Since 1880. the bell with its bell tower has been an integral part of life. If it could talk as well as ring, it might peal forth the legend of the Brown Lady who haunts the campus on Halloween night; the story of the young confederate officer hidden in the watch tower and of the young ladies spreading their hoop skirts on the steps to prevent the Yankees from finding the hidden confederate; the story of the rumored insurrection, a phase of the Nat Turner rebellion, the shooting and burial of one of the rebel- lionists on the campus while the girls were gathered in one room for prayer; of all-day steamboat rides and picnics on the Meherrin Rixer; of all-day com- mencements, with visitors arriving by boat and being guests of the Spencer House or the Boyette Hotel; of its famous presidents and educators as William Hooper, Archibald McDowell; of its first famous literary society organized in 1875; of the entrance, graduation, and return of its illustrious alumni; of its famous Crow ' s Nest for seniors only; and of all the numerous heartaches and joys that have been poured forth among its shaded walks and drives. Chowan now is 103 years old, proud of its traditions, not content only to look back, but eager to look forward too.
