It is plain that they are worthy, One sees by a single look. To describe their worth and valor ' Twould take a ponderous book. Tell us of Brett, we hear you say. All right — we ' ll take up Helen. How she learns that memory work There really is no tellin ' . She has a lot of confidence, And plenty of high ambition. If her grades fall one little bit She feels she ' s struck perdition. Though Estelle is unassuming, She ' s clever, just the same. In writing poetry, plays, and things She ' ll make herself a name ! She tips around and makes no noise — We love her quiet way; But when she gets upon the stage, Oh, people feel her sway! There is no Math that Ruth can ' t work She needs no pencil nor chalk. But when it comes to English, Her tongue will always balk. She stands a spell on one foot at first, Then stands a spell on t ' other; And on which one she feels the worst, She couldn ' t tell her mother. It tickles Thelma ' most to death To hear a joke that ' s funny. Her disposition ' s really sweet — Her face is bright and sunny. Along some lines, though Thelma ' s queer, Of all colors, she loves White. If she visits in East building, She thinks it ' s quite all right. Hilda Matthews is president Of this class of juniors eight. They know that she means business, And will not procrastinate. Some day she will be a lawyer — Now, laugh, if it pleases you. In four more years you ' ll realize That this prophecy is true. Now, Glenn is entirely different, And they wouldn ' t make a pair; For Glenn is unassuming, With a gentle kind of air. Poor little Edna Lassiter Thinks she a poem can write, But what she writes, as you well know, Is soon out of mind and sight. She wishes to become famous, But she ' s such a lazy lass That all her great ambitions Will never come to pass. Here ' s to the Class of Twenty-five! It ' s a class that ' s always true To students, teachers, and classmates, And the work it has to do. Edna Lassiter, ' 25. (Published in Clwwanian, ' 2+.) W. A. HE Y. W. A., organized in 1855, has done much to carry the gospel to the uttermost parts of the earth. The Fannie Knight Circle was named in honor of Chowan ' s first foreign missionary. The Madge Conwell Circle was named in honor of Madge Conwell, who is now doing missionary work in Mexico. Several mission study classes have been held during the year. Miss Dorothy Kellam, State College Correspondent, led a class in The Child and America ' s Future. Missionary pageants and programs have been given. Personal service has been carried on, social life emphasized, and spiritual life deepened through the Y. W. A. Y. W. A. Camp The Chowan College Y. W. A., or Ann Hasseltine Circle, had four representa- tives at the first Southwide Y. W. A. camp at Ridgecrest, June 17-27, 1924. Although • various colleges all over the South had representatives, Chowan was the only North Carolina college that had a delegation. The trips to Asheville, Sunset Mountain, Biltmore, Mt. Mitchell, and other well- known places made the camp life unusually interesting. Many worth-while lectures and mission study classes were given, and much inspiration was gained from the various State and South-wide leaders. Because of these mountain-top experiences, the Y. W. A. girls of the South have been singing, Y. V. A., how much you mean to me — Fellowship with girls so full of glee! Speaking in the manner of sports editors, the Junior-Freshman team pulled off the honors and won the banner. All the teams, however, showed good form. At the time this goes to press the personnel of the basketball team is still somewhat undecided. The Freshmen have accepted the challenges of several high school teams, and our basketeers are confident of victory. Since Mohammed mav not go to the mountain, the mountain, in this case, is coming to Mohammed; for plans are on foot to bring the champions of each county together here in a tournament to play off the championship of Northeastern Carolina. A universal cause for rejoicing is the fact that a heating system is being installed in our large new swimming pool. Aquatic sports and novelty races will then be in order for the remainder of the term. It is too early to prophesy the results of the track season; but suffice it to say that the records of last year will be smashed and new ones set in nearly every event. The athletic director, in fact, expresses herself as being ' well pleased with the enthusiasm shown in all the sports and classroom work. That living ' s made of laughter and good fellowship and song. ' ' The day with golden sunshine and with skies of lovely blue Was surely made for hiking, and for picnic dinners, too; The smell of coffee boiling, or the sizzling of the meat, The challenge of the out-of-doors, no one could fail to greet. Their knickers then they all put on, the Chowan girls so gay, And match their sporting spirit with the glory of the day. But there come times when ill forebodes such wondrous days of fun. And Chowan girls in things like this can never be outdone. So old King Can is heralded — the best that ever was — When mingled with the eats that come from all their ma ' s and pa ' s. In the meetings problems and puzzles are worked out, debates on the contributions of mathematicians are conducted, unique proofs are presented, and papers are written on important mathematicians. Especially are we interested when we can find a woman who has won fame in this line. The fact that the cross-word puzzle has been allowed entrance proves that the club keeps up with the times. Even in mathematics we believe that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Therefore, social life is part of our work. In the monthly meetings of the League problems of education are dis- cussed ; the aims and purposes of education are put before the prospective teachers and through these programs a broader and a deeper meaning, as well as the newer phases of edu- cation, are being realized. Through the assembling of the classes composed of the college students and the experienced teachers much interest and great enthusiasm is being mani- fested bv the members of this organization in the broader pur- poses of education and the greater personal interest in the individual to be developed by the teacher according to the newer educational ideas and ideals. The Teacher Training League was organized for social purposes and professional instruction. However, the programs have been quite varied and the weiner roasts and hikes to the delightful picnic places have been greatly enjoyed, as well as the lectures and various literary features of the programs. CHOWANOKA TWENTY-FIVE CI assies Club The Latin Department of Chowan College has organized itself into a Classics Club, the first of its kind ever organized in the college. All organizations must have a purpose, and thev live no longer than their purpose lives. The purpose of this club is primarily to stimulate interest in the Latin department; secondarily, to create interest in the study of Latin in the high schools of the territory served by Chowan College, and in the third place, to keep in touch with the Latin departments of other colleges and universities of our country. The club meets regularly each month, at which time some phase of Roman life and customs is discussed. An attempt is made to disabuse the minds of students that not only the Latin language is dead, but that the Romans were not a living people when they spoke the language. The attempt has been successful to the greatest degree. Soon the club hopes to prepare costumes for and stage a Latin play. Le Cercle Francais holds frequent meetings during the year as auxiliary work to the French Department. The club offers the opportunity of acquainting the students with the games, songs, and customs of the French people. It purposes to develop an interest in the literature of France, in the life of the French, and in speaking French. The officers of Cercle Francais are: Edna LASSITER President Hazel Griffin rice-President Ella Mae Parker Secretary and Treasurer Jewell Askew Chairman of Program Committee Elizabeth Rogers Reporter CLUB- ESPANOL Club Espanol is open to all students who have completed their first year in Spanish. It is the purpose of the club to promote interest in the life of Spain and in Spanish literature. The officers of Club Espanol are: Marietta Bridcer President Margaret Aman Vice-President Penelope Brown Secretary and Treasurer Hilda Matthews Chairman of Program Committee CHOWANOKA TWENTY-FIVE DRAMATICS iO ° CHOWANOKA TWENTY-FIVE The Chowanian . (Shades of Sophomore English) When I do ope my eyes to morning ' s mist, And hear the wind go whistling ' round the eaves; When I do view the window pane, frost-kist, And dimly through it see the barren trees; When everything is still as still can be, And even the birds have not begun to sing, When everyone is fast asleep but me, With not a care of what the day may bring, Then do I grieve because the daylight came To take away the joys of sleep and rest, Since duties of each day are just the same And must be done though they ' re devoid of zest. Yet we in life our courage still must keep And falter not just for the want of sleep. Lois Essex, ' 27. C— Her name should have been Violet; for that flower is not so shy nor sweet as our Jannie. Rather, she typifies II Pensieroso : ' ' Sober, steadfast, and demure. , , Willie Mae Morton, Ahoskie, N. C— Bill would have been a second Ellen Terry had not her taste been for masculine roles and attire. She is big enough to be a match for any man; and so, who chooseth her must give and hazard all he hath. Christie Whitley (Mrs. Louis J. Brett), Como, N. C— Christie has left us behind to venture into matrimony. The same makes us feel more than ever like old maids. We miss her eulogies on Louis. Katherine Fleetwood, Hertford, N. C— The William Jennings Bryan of the Class of 2+— a free thinker, clever, independent, and always in the midst of things. Quite incidentally, she is pretty and attractive. Gladiola Parker, Gates, N. C— She who, as president of the Student Government, made us unflinchingly walk the straight and narrow path, we fear has most easily succumbed to Cupid ' s dart. Gladiola, don ' t trust these men! Camilla Manson, Dayton Beach, Fla. — Camilla is really so dainty and small, We can ' t be sure that she is at all. She ' s the cleverest nut in 2+ ' s class; So we won ' t ever quarrel if she is a wee lass. Mrs. Mabel Boyette, Murfreesboro, N. C— In the days of famine, scripturally speaking, we were bountifully fed by our married classmate. Needless to say, the way to our hearts is not far different from that to man ' s. Mary Henry Lewis, Kerr, N. C. — None can excel Mary Henry in crushing; Just Mademoiselle will set her to blushing. Nevertheless, she was a true friend to all her crushes. Nancy Parker, Murfreesboro, N. C. — Nancy soars to heights sublime on the wings of song and in everyday life, too. She is always up in the air about something. Her voice will be her fortune vet. William K. McLean ( Bill ), Potecasi, N. C— Our co-ed— look at him, and don ' t blame us for our broken hearts. Whv broken? He ' s married! CHOWANOKA CO? TWENTY-FIVE The Last Word Creep into thy little white bed ; Creep, and let no more be said. Draw the covers round you tight — Brown Lady visits you tonight. Let the long contention cease; You will sooner, then, gain peace; All your struggles wrought in vain, Freedom sweet once more to gain. Rustle! Rustle! then a moan; Ghosts come rattling with a groan. All is dark, and no escape Comes to free you from your fate. Creep from out thy little bed; Creep, and let no more be said. Come with spirits on a roam, Come and enter spirits ' home. Place thy form on that cold tomb. See! That ghost will give you room, Glad a little while to rest From the warmless, damp earth ' s breast. Ah! You, too, will fill a space, And the meat will leave your face, With nothing, only rattling bones, For those college girl neurones. Now, go creep into your bed ; Creep, and let no more be said. Brown Lady leaves you; yet she moans, For a year I ' ll rest my bones. BERYL SOUTER, ' 26.
