ffo MM SPONSORED BY CHOUTEAU SENIORS 1967 After many weeks of long and hard work, the 1967 WILDCAT has been completed. We, the annual staff, sincerely hope that it will bring you many pleasant memories throughout the years to come. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people that have helped to make this annual possible. The members of the annual staff have worked very hard to make this annual a success. Our advisor, Miss Smith, has given each of us a great deal of assistance. We certainly owe her a large amount of thanks. Next, 1 would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who bought ads to sponsor the pages in our annual. I am also grateful to Mr. Cherry, Mr. Endicott, and Mrs. Wisdom, who took the time to compose a message for us to read and remember in later years. 1 appreciate the opportunity I have had to work with Miss Smith and the annual staff in preparing the 1967 WILDCAT. As we go our separate ways, may this annual be a reminder of the wonderful years we have spent together in Chouteau High School. a L 2 Annual King and Queen 3 TOM YARBROUGH and ROSALYN WILLIS Dedication We, the graduating class of 1967, respectfully dedicate this annual to Miss Myrtle Smith. Miss Smith has been teaching in our school for the past twelve years, but we realize that she is much more than simply a teacher. She is always there, ready to give of her own time, to help any student who needs someone to talk with. Miss Smith is a wonderful example of a teacher who takes a genuine interest in her students and becomes a real friend as well as a counselor. She has a quick smile and the special quality that only the best teachers have to make her classes interesting as well as informative. (It certainly takes a great deal of talent to make shorthand interesting!) For all the devotion and guidance she has given us throughout the years, we dedicate the 1967 WILDCAT to our teacher and friend. Miss Myrtle Smith. 4 Board of Education Superintendent President Vice President V. R. CHERRY W. E. BATTENFIELD MARVIN CROSS .Clerk Member Member ALBERT PENNER JOE R. DILL GEORGE MOORE Because no voyage can be undertaken without a plotted course and destination, we have the Board of Education acting as our Maps and Charts Department. With the concentration on available material, they endeavor to send all students on a straight course into the future. GREEN FUNERAL HOME 101 N. Rowe Box 4 Pryor, Okla. Va. 5-0400 7 Superintendent CLARA FAYE BOWLING School Secretary Dear Seniors: You often hear the regretful expression. If I had it to do over.” Unfortunately, life does not give a second chance. You go through step by step and the record is written. You are about ready to move on to the next step. If your accomplishments in high school are not what you would like them to be, you can only resolve to do better on the next step. Let us hope, however, that your years in Chouteau School will be pleasant memories and that the training you received here will have prepared you for a life of service. r 3 Principal The challenge of every new year, for each of us, is the look toward the horizons of learning and culture. In our growth and development as we acquire new skills and master more useful techniques, we improve upon our experiences and gain new satisfactions for ourselves and our loved ones. Preparedness means efforts always, and sacrifice many times. Childish pleasures and aimless pastimes are traded in for new models of performance. We have every reason to be grateful to our Superintendent and Board of Education for their thoughtful interest and encouragement as we attempt to improve the educational opportunities here at Chouteau. We wish to congratulate and to thank those faculty members who have worked to accomplish the publication of this book. 9 Secretaries Mr. Endicott: Vicki Robison Ruth Combs Melinda Helems Bonnie Martin Susan Tucker Earl Wilson Cheryl Kroeker Janie Hughes Garry Beel Mr. Cherry; Connie Haynes Marcia Day Mrs. Crockett: Connie Enyart MAYES COUNTY FARM BUREAU J. CLASS MOTTO: Today We Follow, Tomorrow We Lead. 24 Class History On September 5, 1955, a group of first graders joined together at 9 o’clock in the gym under the direction of Mrs. Cherry to begin their education. Of the students who started in the first grade, 16 remain to graduate. They are Garry Beel, Jerry Couch, Barbara Dodson, Johnny Frailey, John Grossman, Melinda Helems, Garry Hoskins, Connie Haynes, Charlotte Korthals, Marilyn Larremore, Patti Patterson, Bobby Plett, Virginia Rice, and Glenda Skinner. We started our classes in the gym and were the first first graders to use the new grade school building. On that first day of school we had our first taste of music, taught to us by Mrs. Crockett. The first song we sang was Ten Little Indians , but our favorite song came to be Old Mr. Elephant . We were started on our road to artists by Mrs. Nofsinger. How well we remember the bright suns in the skies, and the ground that came within an inch of the top of the paper! Then came the second grade with Mrs. Grider as teacher. This was the year of penmanship, clean handkerchiefs, and The Golden Keys. The third grade was taught by Mrs. Harper. In this year we were joined by Gladys Liggins, who came here when Brushy school consolidated with Chouteau. In the fourth grade we were taught by Miss Westenhaver. Daniel Yoder joined us from Longview school. This was the year of puppet shows, songs in front of the class, and all sorts of creativity. Fifth Grade, taught to us by Mrs. Whitson, was the year of the Civil War. The girls being the Confederates and the boys being the hated Yankees. In this year we were joined by Connie Enyart from Pryor, Tom Phipps from Alamagordo, New Mexico, and Johnny Crow and Charles Cunningham. Sixth Grade--we were the biggest ones in grade school. Mrs. Mitchell was our teacher, but we knew more than she (or so we thought), so who needed a teacher? This was the year we presented the Oklahoma History Pageant. In this year we were joined by Angela Somacal from Texas. Seventh Grade--the year of frustration. The lowest of the underclassmen! And after having been on top in grade school! The first class party and the basketball party made up for it, though. Eighth Grade--the year of rebellion. This was the year we learned that doors are made to go through . We were joined by Marcia Day from Pryor in this year. Freshmen--the first year of high school basketball. In this year we were joined by many students who have added much to our school life. They are Darrell James, Ralph Miller, Judy Coblentz Pitts, and Vernie Williams from Mazie; Virgil Tipton and Eugene Vanbeber from Longview; Wayne Baker, Locust Grove; Tom Cox, Tulsa; and John Cunningham, Joplin, Missouri. Sophomores--we are finally in high school. Two students joined us in this year, Vicki Robison and Jim Wade, both from Tulsa. Juniors--not old enough to run things, but old enough to resent the Seniors getting everything. In this year we were joined by Tom Yarbrough and Rosalyn Willis. This was the first year our basketball team was in a conference, and we came in third place. At last we are Seniors. Blessing and sorrow mixed. For all the years we have been looking forward to this time, now we regret the day more and more as each day passes. In this year we were joined by Wallace Shotwell, from Alameda, California. We, The Senior Class of 1967, now go out into the world to seek what may be found. This is the history of our class throughout our school life. We know not what influences our class members might have on the history of the world. 25 Annual Staff BUSINESS MANAGER, Melinda Helems ASSISTANT, Barbara Dodson FDITOR, Patti Patterson ADVISOR, Miss Smith PHOTO EDITOR, Glenda Skinner PHOTO EDITOR, Virginia Rice ART EDITOR, Charlotte Korthals ■ CLASSES EDITOR, Judy Pitts ORGANIZATION EDITOR, Marcia Day ASSISTANT, Vicki Robison 26 Annual Staff I r ACTIVITIES EDITOR, Connie Haynes ASSISTANT, Gladys Liggins SPORTS EDITOR, Connie Enyart ASSISTANT, Marilyn Larremore Woe is us on picture day. Stars Senior's ?| Senior Good-Bye As we. the Seniors of ’67, pause a moment before continuing along the Highway of Life, we want to express our appreciation and thanks to the faculty of Chouteau School for their interest and guidance. We would also like to acknowledge our gratitude to the Community for its support of our school and our many organizations. We feel that we shall, indeed, have to strive to live up to our motto: Today We Follow, Tomorrow We Lead”. As we journey through life, we shall always remember our life here at Chouteau High School. In the years to come we shall look at this Yearbook and this picture and think of those days when we were the Seniors of 1967. Then we shall remember our motto, but at that time it will have a different meaning. For it will say— Yesterday We Followed, Today We Lead”. 87 STRIPLING CLEANERS Quality Cleaning Pryor, Okla.
