Vandermoon, Coach Scheevel FGOTBALL retrospect, one must feel it was a season that could have been At the beginning of the season, even in the captains practices, mem- bers of the team felt an on-rushing tide of enthusiasm We felt confident in ourselves and and in our coaching staff After weeks of hard work and a lot of football, our first game was upon us Our opponents were of the Rushford Trojans, a team Chatfield hadn't beaten in .-years Going into this game there was an air of nervous tension This was supposed to be a down year for Chatfield and our ranks were filled with young and for the most part--un- tested individuals. We knew we had to prove ourselves, and we went into the game and did just that, After beating Rushford in over- time, we went on to defeat St, Charles to re- tain the Legion trophy. Our record stood at 2-0 and the stage was set for our first conference game with Spring Valley--a predicted powerhouse, We lost the game 6-O. We were disappointed, , ,bitterly disappointed, It had been felt if we could win this game our way would be cleared for the conference cham ionship. The game s ent us emotionall Looking at the 1973 football season in . I several regulars, something that we could not afford as we were not deep in reserves We seemingly were untracked at this point We lost our confidence and one could almost sense an unexplainable feeling that something was missing We finished the season at 4-5, a let down for us and Head Coach Jacobson, as well as his staff Our season was not a winning one--but we never gave up When it came to the final game of the season and nothing was at stake but our own pride--we stood up and won the game, in a spirit characteristic of the CHATFIELD GOPHERS. Judd, Coach Brown THE GRAPPLERS DAN, DEAN, DON ADVANCE TO REGIONS The wrestling team this season did not prove to be a great power house winning only five out of 11 matches. Out of the five teams making up the Maple Leaf Conference, the Chatfield grapplers were only able to R D capture one win, against LeRoy-Ostrander. Although the conference standings did not look good for Chatfield 25 Spring Grove Chatfield, we came back, upsetting the conference Chatfield 31 Grand Meadow champs tHarmonyi and capturing 4th in the District, Chatfield 25 St. Charles right behind 3 Root River Conference teams. This Chatfield 34 Dover-Eyota good performance was accomplished by the help of Chatfield 23 Dodge Center Dan Judd 1132i and Don DiLaura 1105 lbs.i who Chatfield 27 LeRoy-Ostrander proved. to be District Champs in their weight division. 'Chatfield 23 Grand Meadow Dean French also did a spectacular job after being 'Chatfield 19 Spring Valley layed up for part of the season with a broken leg. He Chatfield 29 Rushford captured 2nd place at a 119 lbs. Chatfield then sent 'Chatfield 18 Harmony 3 grapplers to the regions all doing a fair job and 'Chatfield 31 LeRoy-Ostrander giving them good experience in big-time competition. C0nfel'9l'lC9 mafflhes Next years out look hopefully will be a good one loosing only two lettermen at graduation, and leaving a young and experienced team to keep the wrestling competition in full-swing. Although the record was 6-13, it does not state the true reflection of the season. Out of the 13 games 7 of them were lost by 5 points or less. So, you see that it was unfortunate that this was Chatfield's first losing season in over 20 years. To the team and Coach Molly Baum it was certainly a disappointing year. Hopefully, next year's seniors, Jim Meyer, Steve Baier, Eric Kammer, Steve LaPlante, and Butch Isensee will have a better season to look forward to. With a good pitching staff and some fine hitters, they just about made it--getting defeated in the semi-finals of the district by Caledonia. They had a very good season record of 13 wins and 3 losses and tied with Preston for the Maple Leaf champion- ship with a 6 and 1 record. Losing only one Senior, Dan Judd, the 1975 team should be good. Under a new coach, Brennan Hayek, along with the help of Coach Hanson, the season started off well, with Chatfield defeating almost everyone in the conference at least once, which gave us good hopes for the conference championship. However, the last part of the season was hampered by injuries, poor weather, and spotty performances. We made a poor showing in the conference but improved somewhat placing seventh out of thirteen in the District, and sending Kevin Ellis on in the mile run and the mile sprint medley relay to the Region. Next year is very hopeful, however, as there is only one graduating senior, Stuart Stephens, and many strong freshman, sophomores, and juniors to keep going and a large junior high coming up.
