Homecoming Daze Autumn is the season when almost anything can happen-and it does. ln emptied garages throughout the city, floats take on massive proportions. Coronation candidates make preparations for that Cinderella-like event. Band members develop a march step, and cheer- leaders gyrate twice as furiously as usual. The football team becomes a sweaty, everworking mass. The school is a pinwheel of activity and then suddenly-it's HOME- COMING. Nothing beats winning, closes the Thursday night pep fest. The lights dim and MC Don Johnson announces the candidates for homecoming royalty. A hush, a crash of cymbals, and out of the crown in the center of the auditorium steps Debbie Fratzke, page, whose sealed envelopes reveal the names of the royalty-a memora- ble coronation. On Friday the band blares forth, and float after float glide lazily down Main Street. In the evening pop- corn pops, leaves crackle, bundled-up people stand in the chilly air around the football field to witness the de- feat of the Spring Valley Wolves by the unbeaten Go- phers. The Concert Band's half-time show Hey, Look Me Over echoes throughout the valley. Cheers-congratulations-the Homecoming dance -a souvenir paper-are all iumbled together into the last few hours of Homecoming time. Then, everything is packed away, the floats are torn apart, and decorations wait again for the next year-the time when almost any- thing can happen. Offense Grinds 'Em Out ln summing up the Chatfield football team's season, one word describes it completely: SUCCESS. In every phase ofthe game and at all times during the season, the Go- phers showed superiority over their opponents. In eight games Dean Brown's Bombers piled up 279 points while their staunch defense allowed 26 points. In the first game the Gophers made believers of everyone in the district as they shutout a potentially potent Rushford team 27-O. ln the following weeks the Gophers showed signs of improvement, beating a young St. Charles team 34-O, and edging a scrappy Farmington team I4-7. The following week conference games started. Wykoff showed its talent in returning kickoffs, but for the most part, their offense was checked by the Gophers. The final score was 48-12. The'Gopher defensive unit turned in a sparkling perfor- mance in their next game by defeating Lanesboro 33-O. The unit allowed the Burros only five first downs all of which came in the second half. Spring Valley had the misfortune of facing a fired-up Gopher squad the following Friday. Returning alumni were treated to a successful homecoming, which always includes a victory. The Gophers romped 46-0 over the Wolves. The hapless Harmony Cardinals posed little threat to the ever-improving Gophers. Line blocking reached a peak as the Gophers rolled up over 300 yards on the ground alone! The score was Chatfield 48, Harmony O. ln the final game of the season, the Gophers wouldn't allow an upset. With only two days of preparation, they successfully stopped Preston's aerial attack. With this final win -29-7, the Gophers extended their winning streak to 24 games in a row. Ron King was honored by being selected for the All- state team at the center position. At the end of the football season, the Chatfield team was ranked 25th in the state. ww F N.- S-1 lis- cuffs' 119K Co-Captains D. Bernard and R. Its staff of forty members is dedicated to the ideals of accurate reporting and tree expression of ideas. The paper is published in a special page of the Chatfield NEWS. Under the direction of Miss Janice Lee, the staff has published additional specials on homecoming, Christmas, safety, and spring. The journalists are divided into three groups-feature writers, re- porters, and typists. The editor and his assistant supervised the assigning of articles and approved or revised articles submitted tor publication, the department coordinator and her assistant kept a list ot ideas for fu- ture paper articles and suggested assignments for all departments. The assistant department coordinator exchanged copies of the GOPHER with other area schools. Junior high editors informed their reporters ot their assignments. The most needed members ot the staff were the section heads who as- signed and collected the articles. X 9! FEATURE WRITERS-Seated: C. Moen, S. Thompson, M. Coe, M. Severud, K. Jensen Standing M. The team seemed ready, but the more avid followers could sense a lack of hustle and alertness. The Gophers won the first three out of four games of the young season, and then the roof fell in. While entertaining strong teams during the holiday break, the Gopher's game crumbled. Simple shots would not go in, the lack of height began to show, and most important of all a lack of hustle was very much in evidence. With the new year, the team fi- nally snapped its losing streak at five games in a row and started the rich part of a rags to riches season. Al- though being two games behind Preston, the league leader, the Gophers went to work and won the last eight conference games to settle with Preston for a tie for the conference championship. The season had ended for most teams, but it had iust begun for the Gophers. Mabel-Canton, the first op- ponent in the district quarter-finals, proved to be no match for the highly potent Bernatz team. The score was close at half time, but a thirty point output in the third quarter put the game out of reach for the opponent. The Gophers advanced to the semi-finals of the district in Rochester and met a tall Harmony team. The game was close until the middle of fourth quarter. The Gophers shrugged off their nervousness and held Harmony to one field goal in the last quarter, winning by eight points. The stage was set for the district championship. The Gophers stopped the sharp-shooting Rushford team when Bob Hall in the last two seconds of overtime dropped a thirty foot shot to win the game and champi- onship for Chatfield. ln the first game of the Regional tournament, Chat- field was defeated by a strong Hayfield team. The bas- ketball team and its coaches deserve congratulations for an exciting and fruitful season. SENIORS: P. Lawson, D. Bernard, B. Tuohy, R. Billman, J. Fratzke, R Drogemuller, R. Hall, A. The BURR OAK staff consists of fourteen inexperi- enced seniors who at first clidn't realize how much work went into putting out a yearbook. Working many hours, they struggled to meet each deadline. Laying out the pages was only part of the iob. Pictures had to be tak- en, copy written, and many little iobs that took much planning and work had to be done. Everyone associated with the yearbook felt lasting pride when pages were completed, and they were anx- iously looking forward to viewing the finished product. FS .J'. f' , lj? k Row I: S. On alternating Mondays, the Art Club meets for an hour after school, and there its members are given a chance to do whatever they wish to do with the various artistic mediums. Block prints, mobiles, and papier mache are but a few of the art forms open to the members. Each member often takes one of these forms and concentrates on it for a lengthy project, the results of- ten good and satisfying to the artist. The Art Club is also of benefit to the school, as it assists in such school proiects as Coronation and Prom decorations. Its members find the club a place to relax and let their imaginations take over. ' ,,. g ax K. Kremer, V. Sisson, M. Underleak, M. Thieke, R. Tangen, M. Richter, T. Tuohy, J. Richards, R Richards, P. From the start of the school year, the Safety Council sponsored projects to help make Chatfield safer. The Council is divided into the Ele- mentary, High School, and Community committees which are free to plan their own projects of skits, movies, contests, etc. The Council's big project was in February, Traffic Safety Month. Dur- ing this time, poster contests by the Elementary Committee, assemblies and car checks by the High School Com- mittee, and a Community safety pro- gram by the Community Committee helped to point up all forms of traffic safety, and made the month's program a success. A special Traffic Safety issue of the Gopher was published in cooperation with the Council, and was entered in the Kemper Insurance Com- pany's Traffic Safety Contest. At the Olmsted County Safety Con- ference at Stewartville, Don Johnson, the Chatfield Safety Council president was elected first president of the Olm- sted County Youth Safety Council. At this conference, CVHS was presented the President's award for its 1966-67 safety campaign. Safety Stressed All Year COMMUNITY COMMITTEE-Kneeling: D. Johnson, J. Zawacki. Standing: D. Wertz, W. The student voice of Chosen Valley High School is found in the Student Senate. The members who are elected by the various classes and clubs in the school provide a vital link between the faculty and the student body. Opinions of both groups are expressed here on ca common meeting ground. Student ideas and interests relating to the school are discussed and voted upon. ln this way student opinions can be voiced and discussed. The Senate members voted on the cheerleaders. Another innovation of the group was the formation of an honor system by which approved students may be tree during their study halls. Mr. Jerome Knapp, high school princi- pal, is adviser of the group. Row 'lr D. Werfz, C. Sorenson, L. Zincke, C. Moore, L. Holefs. Row 2: M. Stephens, J. Loughrey, M. Unclerleok, E. Brown, T. Eligibility requires a mini- mum of a B average during high school. In the iunior year five per cent of the class is elected and an addi- tional ten per cent in the senior year. No honor con- ferred by the school excels that represented by the so- ciety. Fourteen Seniors ancl four Juniors attended the Banquet at La Crescent on May 6.
