No honor conferred by the school excels that represented by this society. Eligibility for the National Honor Society requires a minimum of a B average during high school. In the junior year five per cent of the class is elected and an additional ten per cent in the senior year. Selection of these students is made by the faculty. This award represents the fundamental objectives for which schools are established. JUNIORS: R. Salter, J. Halvorson, R. King, I. Sommerfeld, S. Thompson. OurGoverning Bod . .. S d G The Student Senate is the student voice as- tu sisting in the governing of the Chosen Valley I-Iigh School. Each class and school organization is rep- b resented. During the Senate meetings, the mem- bers discuss matters of importance to the entire stu- dent body. They work together to improve student S d e n t n a activities. By voting on matters, it shows a form of democracy in action. The Student Senate serves as a vital link be- tween the faculty and the students ofthehigh school Standing: L. Campion, D. Dresler, J. Teas were given for the teachers of both the elementary and high school. The members also served as guides at the Parent-Teacher Conferences in October. In order to learn about teaching, the 0 group has visited colleges and has listened to sever- A I al speakers. To gain practical experience, the members have acted as teachers' aides. Seated: L. Q., if , T JXP Safety Council Make Us Aware of Safety -- The Safety Council is made up of three com- mittees: Elementary, High School, and Community, whose main concern this year is to achieve greater safety in the school and community. The elemen- tary committee takes care of anything dealing with safety in grades one through sixg this includes such things as poster contests., bicycle-rodeo, bulletin displays, and fire drills. The high school committee stresses safety especially in sports and in driving. Pamphlets, assemblies, and fire drills are methods used to pre- sent safety information in grades seven through twelve. The community committee has the most com- plicated job of trying to reach the whole communi- ty in an attempt to keep them safety minded. They stress driving and pedestrian safety, as well as hunting safety, fire safety, and any other fields of value to the general public. The biggest event of the year is the community program which is an evening of entertainment which emphasizes safety. The Safety Council has an all day annual convention at one of the Olmsted County schools where certain topics of safety are discussed. For the past three years the Chosen Valley High School has won the Safety Council award for being the outstanding school stressing safety in Olm- sted County. ELEMENTARY COMMITTEE--M. Ellis, P. Boys and Ghouls To ge th e r Everyone who enjoys monster movies or plays had a wonderful time watching the Junior Class pre- sentation of BOYS AND GHOULS TOGETHER. The scene used throughout the play was the living room of an old castle somewhere high in the Alps. The hair-raising screams as the clock struck the hour were one of the things helping to create the ghostly atmosphere. Jim Sommerfeld as Model S , amechanical robot, with machine like movements, marked him as definetely non-human. Mary Ellis, as Granny, maintained a difficult bent position and rasping voice without ever seeming normal . Donald John- son as the Count had the appearance and accent for the traditional unearthly pride of his ancestors, Frankenstein and Dracula. The other members of the cast included Ilene Nelson, Judd Whitcomb, Lynda Lawson, Dianne Bicknese, Jean Ward, Jean Asleson, Judy Zawacki, Steve Rogers, Jack Halvor- son, Linda Ruskell, David Todd, and Bernie Tuohy. The play was directed by Mr. Richard Fen- wick. TJ :si 'Q Row 1: Miss Durscher, J. Zawacki, P. Zincke, J. Ward. Row 2: M. Giehtbrock, L. Lawson, L. Ruskell, M. Ellis. Row 3: N. Goldsmith, S. Fratzke, S. Rowland. Drogmueller, R. Billman, M. Fratzke, J. Fratzke Another Maple LeafConference Championship was won by the 1966-67 basketball team coached by Mr. Gerald Bernatz. This was indeed an ex- ceptional title since the squad was undefeated in conference play, the first time in the history of the conference. The highly successful season was made possible through strong defensive play and even scoring balance among the squad members. The regular season ended with a 16-2 record. Three senior starters, Steve Amundson, Mike Fratzke, and Steve Rowland were accompanied by two juniors, Bob Hall and Dan Bernard. A strong bench of regulars who contributed more than their share to the season included Al Voshell, Bob Drogemuller, Ron King, Jeff Fratzke, Mike Lane, Rick Billman and Pat Lawson. Although many games were thrilling, prob- ably the turning point of the season was the memor able game at Harmony with Chatfield winning in the last second by one point. As a result captain- elect Steve Rowland received the honor of being named to the WCCO All State Team of the week. In tournament play, Chatfield defeated La Crescent '72-45, Houston 68-65, and went on to trounce Rushford 68-54 to win the DISTRICT 1 CHAMPIONSHIP. D othing Beats Winning ! An honor ary pr inc ess Hiroko Takemori The enchantment of Japan comes to Chatfield through our American Field Service student, Hiroko Takemori. Her home town is Himeji on the island of Honshu. I-liroko's father works in the office of a bus company, while her mother takes care of the home. Her sister. Kazuko, is asophomore in school, and her brother, Toshiyuki, is in the fourth grade. l-Ier American home is with Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Andersen. I-Iiroko, a gentle and soft spoken person. has helped us gain international understanding, Her polite manner and neatness reflect the way the Japanese people live. Wherever Hiroko goes, she wears a warm and sincere smile. Chatfield students have discovered that Hiroko has a keen and perceptive mind. She enjoys math and science courses. She is active in the Student Senate, FTA, paper staff, chorus, and GAA. Hiroko, quiet but yet fun-loving, enjoys sports, expecially football and tennis. Her hobbies include singing, listening to records, and reading in her second lan- guage. Upon returning to Japan, Hiroko plans to attend college to prepare for an internationalcareer.
