emphasis on creativity inspires english students left coach bill benson outlines his game plans for the correct uses of nouns and verbs to this captive au- dience, his grammar class, top right classwork is the surest, but not always the most popular way to keep students quiet, right jay gonta- rek finds it is simpler to keep up, if he follows discussions in the book. english teachers are using a different method to teach reading skills, a projector-like machine helps increase stu- dent reading capacities, a con- trolled reader and reader’s di- gest combine to form pro- grams that flash stories on a screen and allow a student to read without trouble. “it increases speed without loss of comprehension,” says mrs. sarah davis, head of the english department, songwriting is one project in mrs. julia hammet’s creative writing classes, many activ- ities such as composing words and music to original songs help students learn to express themselves. some of the other classes, like mass media, also stress “creativity” by students, mrs. randi friese supervises stu- dents’ “film-making.” so who knows—choctaw could be pro- ducing 1984’s authors, stars and directors—thanks to our innovative english staff. 28 english

student participation marks language conventions folk dancing was “in style” at fort walton beach high on december 2 when foreign lan- guage students from choctaw attended a county “language” dance, french classes from choctaw provided entertain- ment with a festive can-can dance presentation. other “highlights” of 1973 involved language journeys, select Spanish students went to jacksonville in april. a day of impromptu plays, acts and speeches brightened the agenda, the german classes journeyed to st. Petersburg for annual convention; cathy green represented the german classes as the secretary of the florida association for stu- dents in german, she did the work of convention plans with other executive members. top herr dark points out the impor- tance of study to his classes, bottom left wynn albright discovers easy learning from a head-set. bottom middle french teacher, mrs. preble, gives the day’s assignment, bottom right karen blair and jenny cox lis- ten to correct french pronounciation on a tape recorder. 30 languages
