student assistants contribute to library success “the library could not be run without them,” says head librarian, mrs. joy maudlin, in reference to the library assist- ants. assistants arrange dis- play windows, process books and help students with all their difficulties in the library. the library offers students a variety of material, including over 130 different magazines and newspapers and audio visual material needed in the classes, the library committee, which is composed of six teachers and two students, suggests needed books and magazines for the library to purchase. top dale mcnamara discovers the usefulness of the card catalog, left the magazine section captures kay waddell's attention, right doug hammond finds the library offers a variety of research material. 26 library

counselors give amiable assistance with problems “we aren’t in the process of making decisions for the stu- dents, we help them make their own,” states mr. john gordon, 12th grade counselor. guidance assists students with any problems they wish to talk over, confident and trusting relationships grow be- tween counselors and students while the student goes from his sophomore to senior year, counselors also speak with parents and teachers as well as related outside influences, mrs. jewel pierce aids juniors, and mrs. doris peterson helps sophomores. new this year is mrs. betty harrison, our occupational specialist, mrs. harrison helps students get jobs and remain in touch with the school sys- tem here. mrs. jean grooms in guid- ance keeps students’ cumula- tive folders and does guidance secretarial work. top trying to decide on a college, debbie royster and mrs. pierce look to the reference books for help, cen- ter left arranging papers, mrs. jean grooms prepares for the oncoming rush of students, left talking with parents, mr. john gordon works from both ends to help bridge the generation gap. center right mrs. pe- terson acquires a greater prospec- tive of student’s needs through per- sonal hies. guidance 25

janitors handle school cleaning picking up pieces of broken windows, replacing worn-out lights, rejuvenating the bath- rooms, and cleaning the school are the responsibilities of mr. richard cothran and his staff which consists of six members: mr. and mrs. lewis williams, mrs. mrytle adams, mr. hollis miller, mr. charles adams and mr. wade griffin—a full-time staff. top sweeping the halls, mr. hollis miller does not miss a corner, left richard cothran inspects halls to be sure everything is in order, right mrs. ila dudley (principal’s secretary) instructs mrs. myrtle adams to help clean the office. maintenance 27
