With many young Iackets seeing varsity action for the first time the team proved that the jump to class 5a was a challenge they were more than capable of handling. One thing that stood out was the tremendous leadership provided by a small group of seniors. Many of this years seniors were rewarded by being selected to various all- star teams. Toby Stephens, Chris Desoto, Brian Neal, Dennis Lester, Tony Welch and Trent Smith were selected to the prestigious 5a all-star team selected by the Oklahoma Football Coaches Association. The 1986 football team was presented one of the biggest challenges in the history of the school. These young men and coaches are to congratulated for the way they accepted that challenge and for the fine season they had. Above: Tony Cordova shows determination in completing the play. The Choctaw Yellowjackets became 0klahoma's glamour team in 1987 with a 32-4 record, 11 of those games being shutouts. The season brought with it more than just outstanding layers and numerous awards, it also became a year we'lJl never forget. The remarkable performance of the team was due to quality players at ever position that worked together like poetry in motion. Tliiese poetic pilots of the baseball diamond were crowned one of the top ten teams in the United States by the Collegiate Baseball Magazine. The Iackets were on a 22 game winning streak up until the final round of the state tournament. It turned out to be a nightmare for the Iackets and all Choctaw fans. It was top of the 6th and the bases were loaded as Brian Ellis stepped u to the plate, and hit a roller toward the Owasso shortstop. A controversial interference call against Choctaw pinch runner Craig Wanish eased what would have been a go-ahead run. According to one sports writer, the toughest team the jackets faced this season was MWC but in the o inion of many others, the toughest team Choctaw facedp was the team of officials at the State finals. ll I' H Below: Shaun, Thad and Kyle relax before playing Bixby. 'Q ff A . Mass fx Calendar Girls 9-3 94 General Interest THE CHOC TA W Bring me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. That is the welcome and the pro- mise of Our Lady. She represents THE AMERICAN DREAM. ln 1986 we celebrated the Statue of Liberty's 100 birthday. Our Liberty celebration began with an awesome fireworks display, pictured here, on the fourth of July. Standing in New York Harbor, holding her torch of freedom to light the way for millions is our Lady Liberty. She stands forever strong to guide, protect, and remind us that we are a nation conceived in Liberty. The Statue of Liberty is a sculptured symbol of freedom, a symbol of democracy clothed in cop- per and iron. The idea of l Liberty Weekend for most people was simply to have fun to watch ships passing under the sun and fireworks booming under the stars, to feel good about themselve's because they felt good about their coun- try, to feel proud of being proud. The Statue of Liberty had the QFGOTGST birthday ever, and why not? We kicked everything off with singers, dancers, and marching bands at the opening ceremonies on Governor's Island for the relighting of the statue. The crowds ex- ploded with pride and ex- citement. The feeling of an- DAIL Y Birrhda y Celebration ticipation was overwhelming! The world held its breath as the moment finally came, and the birthday girl made her appearance, Americans cheered with full force as fireworks haloed the statue and lit up the Manhattan Skyline. It was the most awesome display of pride, beauty, and lights the world has ever seen. They had, that night, a televised naturalization ceremony for 16,000 im- migrants in five cities. On Ellis Island, Chief Justice Warren Burger led the new Americans, live and remote, in reciting the oathe of alligince. Then United States District Court Judge Mark A. Costantino led the crowd with a more plain spoken version of citizenship: Take a real good look at each other. What do you see? You see people of all races all colors, all creeds. What do we do in America when we meet people? We shake hands. C'mon shake hands! When you've shaken hands, you can say that you are real Americans. As many as 6 million peo- ple came to celebrate with Lady Liberty. People from all over the country to pay tribute to a lady that has become the mother of our American dream. She says so much with her strong quiet dignity. President Reagan summed our feel- ings up by saying, We are the keepers of the flame of liberty, we hold it high tonight for the world to see. The things that unite us - America's past of which we are so proud, of our hopes and aspirations for the future of the world and this much loved country - these things far outweigh what lit- tle divides us. an .gvuuinnua-xx-f4ul.,a 1-i1,i .t an 1,1 - .- :yi sr.-v11mnm Big Stars of '87 ln the sports scene this yeor: New York Mets Gory Corter is lifted in the oir by relief pitcher Jesse Orosco following the Met eight-five victory of the Boston Red Sox in the seventh gome of the World Series. In November President Reagan landed at our own Tinker Air Force Base to pro- mote the Oklahoma Governor's election. One problem called to America 's at- tention this year is called CRACK on the East Coast and ROCK on the west. Whatever its name, this refined, smokable form of cocaine may be the most addictive narcotic ever sold on the streets of America. On the some sad note a drought spread throughout the Southeast during 1986. It was the worst dry spell on record. At the peak of the drought, drops wilted from Southern Pennsylvania all the way to Northern Florida. Even after some rain, many farmers in the Carolinas, Georgia, Ten- nessee, and Virginia were close to ruin. It was a cheerful event of 1986-87 when Caroline Kennedy, who captured America's heart.as a little girl ramping through the white house, married Ed- win Schlossberg, a New York businessman. 96 General Interest Among rhe celebrities who died in 1966 were singer Kate Smith who died June 17 of respiratory arrest at the age of 79 Benny Goodman the king of Swing died June 13 of cardiac arrest James Cagney one of Hollywoads famous toughguys died March 30 at the age of 66 and Ted Knight best known for his role in the TV series The Mary Syn Q' Tyler Moore Shaw died August 26 of cancer at the age of 62. ln the Political scene, Phillipine President Fer- dinand E.
