Dedication I Bill Ayres s I 'K A .. Wi' ' i. mfr if . y Aequanimitas is carved on the mantel of the old Faculty Room directly under the Library. lt's still there but hidden. On the ontrary, highly visible is Bill Ayres, who takes as his motto, this classic virtue. His wise direction of college placement draws nduring strength from it, especially, in a late evening conversation with a parent whose son has just been rejected by Stanford. fter pleasantries the parent says, By the way, Bill, will you call Stanford and have them reserve the inexplicable rejection of ty son - Aequanimitas! Syzygy, too, explains Bill Ayres's transcendental outlook. Some people are fortunate to have their ducks in a row. Bill is ove ducksg his planets are in alignment. He has the infinite capacity to share knowledge going back to the time he was a st-rate science teacher. Never dogmatic, Bill had the ability to push the minds of his students without their feeling the prod. 'ne student in Bill's unique Third Form Science Class wrote, He knew each one of us as an individual and knew when to make xceptions and permit a student to cultivate an instinct for research and not be bound by academic structural silliness. -Svzvevl Apply the scientific method to Bill - observe carefully. He never walks. He meanders. Like Fabius Maximus, The Delayerg Bill as met his Hannibals. Unlike the Roman his are not shouting victories. He does not understand the art of put downs nor ow to take unfair advantage. For example, as a consummate fan of the Old Cardinals he admired the Gas House Gang short- top, Leo Durocher, even though he could never agree with Leo's, Nice guys finish last. And there are those who recall the me when Bill, The Harvard hockey captain, stopped the game on his own initiative to help an injured Yale goalie. The referee ad not seen fit to blow the whistle. Bill did. Bill's understanding of the need for dignity in many life situations as well as his appreciation of the dignity in every one of us take him a special person. With great appreciation we dignify him by this tribute.
