Dedication T is our privilege here to express what so many have felt about one man, George Steele, who retires this June after forty years of devoted service to Choate. His contributions to the School have been many and varied. A gifted mathematician. he was for many years the head of the Mathematics Department. A consumate executive, he has directed the complex life of the School, from daily permissions to the entertainment of nearly five hundred parents as week-end guests, carrying in his encyclopedic memory the minutiae of rooms, beds, and appointments of a thousand people. As dis- ciplinarian, he has been clairvoyant in sensing the line between the peccadillo stemming from high spirits and the misdemeanor arising from unworthy motives. In his dispensation of penalties he has shown unfailing understanding and justice. As Director of the Summer Session for over thirty years, he has brought order out of chaos in the lives of many a stumbling boy. Throughout his oflicial life he has been steadfast in his respect for the integrity of the individual. Great as his official contributions to the life of Choate have been, however. the contributions which will be the most deeply cherished, perhaps, are those of George Steele, the man. His in- sistence upon standards of gentlemanly behavior, his intuitive recognition of the needs of others, his tirelessness in the per- formance of endless routine tasks, his habitual cheerfulness, his continuing interest in Choate men beyond graduation-these he made matters of example rather than mere precept. His instinct for doing the gracious thing has become more than a mere by- word: he has made it a living principle. To a demanding pro- fession he has given unfaltering consecration, the inevitable fruit of which is uncommon gratitude and affection. In dedicating this volume of THE BRIEF to George Steele, the members of the Board join all Choate men in paying tribute to one who, while helping so many to Umanliness and aptness to learn, has evidenced wisdom, patience, discretion, and zeal for God and Truth. ft W0477f fl Q90 .C a to 'SQ fs' 'lf ik - Z 1- lllnlllm ' 3 5 Illlllmlf S 5 illiill 'll'llll3 ,g Q ,nn t., Q 0 Q .
