School is people, a patchwork of needs, interests, and goals. This book will try to capture the peo- ple of CCS in all their varied roles. Each person from the newest eighth grader to Mr. Talbot has left a pan of himself in the annals of Chittenango High School to make this year unique. The following pages will capture the moments these people have given the year to make it special. As one candle can light the darkness, so can one person What are the students a pan of? The United States of America, Continent of North America, Western Hemisphere, the Earth, the Solar System, the Universe, the mind of God. - Thornton Wilder 3 The Palladium Recognizes Self-Sacrifice. As Junior Class advisor, Mr. Couse has gone through many unique experiences and some of these were with the Class of '77. His enthusiasm spirited the class to put on a great prom and his innovative ideas added a very successful concert and a lucrative movie to the accomplishments of the class. His deep involvement will leave a lasting impression in the memories of the Senior Class. 4 Teachers Earn Appreciation The Senior Class is unanimous in its admiration for Mr. Getchonis. As advisor for the senior class, he endures senioritis, magazine sale, candy sale, senior dinner dance, not to mention getting everyone through driver-ed alive, and still maintains his sense of humor. Anyone who has had Mr. Hutko as an Earth Science or Gen- eral Chemistry teacher knows how fully he involves himself in his work and students. His active participation with the Honor Society exemplifies his role of caring. This corner of the yearbook has been put aside in order to thank a terrific teacher. The demands that Mr. Conklin made of the Senior Class when they were rank eighth graders first introduced to biology helped to form some of their better academic habits. His classes are an experience one never forgets. 5 m in m • • m • v 9 ; ‘ ' • ■fi a mm Individual skills are pooled in the team effort. To the Class of 1977 - Your high school days are over - the rest of your life is stretched out before you. This is a time for reflection; a time to assess that which is past and a time to make plans for what lies ahead. Your lives, to this point, have been relatively free of responsibilities. Many good times should dwell in your memories. The years ahead are yours alone. Only you can really determine whether those years will be productive and enjoy- able or wasted and tedious. Let each of us take a vow to lead a life which is honest, fruitful, of benefit to others and enjoya- ble to ourselves and our families. Life goes by quickly - don’t waste it. Be able to look back one day and be proud of your accomplishments and in the fact that you did it on your own and not at the expense of others. Good Luck and sincere best wishes. Your friend, Mr. Harold Talbot High School Principal 12 Mr. Warren Jerome, Superintendent Charles Molloy, Assistant Principal Although Mr. Molloy was a new assistant principal, his involvement with the student body was not hindered. He was on a committee of teachers which met with students to deal with senioritis. He believes that the restlessness prevalent among seniors leads to the waste of individual and group tal- ents. Some kind of program enrichment is needed to keep seniors involved. Peter Sweet, Assistant Principal Mr. Sweet is very active in helping this school meet the individual needs of people within the school and the community. Not only does he help with the students problems, but with those of adults as being the director of Adult Education. He enjoys these opportunities to aid each person individually as he believes everybody is different. SCHOOL BOARD - First Row: Mr. Deven- dorf, Mrs. Melchis- key, Mr. Barnes. Others look up to you, and you don’t have to look up to anybody. - Karen DeMario I used to look up to Seniors as a Fresh- man, but now it’s nothing. - Sheri Vincelette Don't have to come back next year. - Pat Harris Nothing. -Karen Hatch It's my last year of High School and you’re sup- posed to feel like somebody. - Sue Ostrowski Being a little freer - Ileen Feinberg You’re more rewarded, you think you can get away with more. - Anne Reutter Nothing, we’re still treated like eighth graders. - Connie Taylor It's finally over. - Harold Oot Being a senior has made me realize that the best years of my life are my school years, that I’ll never forget. - Cathy Hall A member of the Palladium staff also asked some seniors this question: What do you think about Senioritis?” It's great, after 13 years of school you need a break or two or three . . . - Ron Regan I love it! - Greg Burchell I think that the school isn’t as concerned about the students as much as they are about their state aid - that is why ’’Senioritis” is such a problem! - Liberty Wilson I don’t, I just do it! - Wayne Rasmussen Some people take advantage of it because there are more privileges. Being a senior is something you should look forward to. - Bill Nickal Just whose philosophy is senioritis??! - Chia-Lin Chang I think Senioritis is good to some extent. But I don’t think we should be stereotyped the same way as the past senior classes. - Sabra DeMario A little fun is alright but you can get carried away with it. - Dave Eckerlin I think we have some senioritis, like always but what They (faculty) are blowing it way out of can we do about it, we have it every year, proportion. The most satisfying aspect I find in teaching is simply working with high school age kids. Kids keep you young, no matter how trying they may be at times. I am particularly sat- isfied when I can instill a love and appreciation for some area of English or Drama in a student or a group of students. - Mr. Ellstrom 1 enjoy working with the students. - Mr. Webber I guess the most rewarding thing about teaching here is . . . seeing the satisfaction of accomplishment in the faces of the fortunate few who take advantage of their talents, the true and deep personal pride that some take in using those talents to the fullest. Unfortunately it’s not too many who really strive to have this sort of feeling happen. - Mr. Callaghan Watching some people mature. - Mr. Prenevost Just being with the students, I have fun with them. - Mr. Erion I find teaching a very gratifying experience. The rewards are probably only under- standable to a teacher. The idea of knowing that you have the opportunity to help young people prepare themselves for the outside world excites me. The accom- plishment of this goal has been made enjoyable for me at C.C.S. due to the fantas- tic faculty-administration and kids I work with. I still tell friends that teach at other schools that C.C.S. kids are the best . . . and I mean it! - Mr. Couse I enjoy working with the students, and knowing that I’m helping in some small way. - Mr. Getchonis Working with the kids, the enjoyment of seeing them mature into adults. - Mr. DiChristina Hearing about the success of the students after they graduate. - Mr. Kinsella The most worthwhile thing is watching students progress. It's a very satisfying and exhilarating experience. - Mrs. Langdon 67 English ’’Think like a wise man but communicate in the lan- guage of the people. - William Butler Yeats f Mr. William McSwaine Mr. Gregory Ellstrom Mrs. Pauline Walker Mr. Robert Couse Mrs. Ellen Agnew 68 Mrs. Eleanor Waring Reading No entertainment is so cheap as reading, nor any pleasure so lasting. - Ladymary Wortley Montagu Mrs. Elna Gordon Mr. Dean Dymond 69 Social Studies ”Our heritage is composed of all the voices that can answer our ques- tions. We hope that the ideas in the articles linger in the students’ minds. In reporting we have found out that there is an abundance of different people, ideas and activities that build our school. Teams and clubs would not be if there were not the individual minds and abilities to make them work. In school we are able to mold and express the individual person each one of us is. Each morning when we rise we leave the protection of our parents to face problems whose solutions will be our own. True, some decisions will be wrong, but most of us will pick ourselves up and try not to make those mistakes again. Mistakes will teach us to understand just who we truly are and the measure of our abilities. We learn to be guided by failure and search each day for the best that is in us. If we cannot sing a note, maybe we can be Liberaces on the piano. I hope that everyone can benefit in the way I have since being exposed to C.C.S. and all the different things that one can do and learn. It helps to rake out the ideas that don’t belong to our individual selves. My experiences and the many people I have and will meet will structure the backbone of what decisions will be best for me. C.C.S. has helped me to know what direction I should choose to go if I am to be happy and successful. Wendy Taylor - Editor Mary Frey - Editor 33 JUNIOR CHORUS - First Row: J. Beals, J. O’Brian. T. Photography Gives Staff Members a Chance to Express Their Individualism King Kong was a project in the school which numerous Juniors and Sen- iors, plus a few underclass students, worked on this fall. He would not have been possible without the time and dedication of the following people: Clay Orbesen (chief architect), Patty Barber, Steve Barnes, Debbie Bar- rett, Patty Borland, Alicia Dombrowski, Joe Granata, Kathy Hale, Pat House, Kim Mann, Tom Markert, Bill McCarthy, Chris Orbesen, Don Pfohl, Dave Precourt, Scott Roach, Dick Stevens, Pete Stevens, and Tim Thompson. Both classes appreciated the help they received from Mr. Getchonis (Senior Class Advisor), and Mr. Couse (Junior Class Advisor) who supervised the entire project. 152 Kong is King It’s true! Chittenango High won the King Kong look alike contest sponsored by local radio station WOLF. The contest was open to area schools and was an important part of a wide-spread promo- tional venture for the movie KING KONG. Sparked by our own Mr. Couse, the project from its birth was destined to be a huge success. The key to that success was student involvement. Kids throughout the entire school were buzzing with plans, suggestions and enthusiasm. Soon Kong was no longer a dream but was becoming a reality. Committees were organized, leaders asserted themselves and the best construction and artistic talents this school had to offer were called on. Kong, the image of wood, chicken wire and insulation, acquired a heart and soul and became a living legend to the students of Chittenango High. After hours, days and nights of back-breaking toil, Kong was ready for the judging. The hour the judges were to arrive was grow- ing closer and then it happened - trag- edy! Kong toppled. A fleeting glimpse of despair flashed across the face of Chittenango High as the entire school’s heart momentarily stop- ped. Almost immediately, that heart started beating once again even stronger than before. The word was spread that Kong needed help and help came in droves. The pace was quick, the work frantic, the deadline for the judging approached and then . . . Kong was restored to life, stronger and more vital than before. Those of us who knew and loved Kong knew that there was no way he could have been beaten and we were right. Kong resided for a week in the Penn- Can Mall and invited all passerbys to see his movie. That spirit that started here in Chittenango brought thrilled little boys and girls and brought Mom and Dad back to the days when their only worry was ”if Kong was real or not?” Everyone who had a part in the Kong project is to be commended heartily. It was a tremendous undertaking that could have only been accomplished with team- work, school spirit and pride. So many times we all have to suffer because of the foolish acts of a few. Kong demonstrated that the vast, vast, vast majority of stu- dents at Chittenango are creative, pro- ductive, mature, hard working and just plain decent people. Our prizes for winning the contest were a free record dance, $400 and a free pre- viewing of the movie KING KONG for each and every student. 153 Palladium Boosters Dave and Lib Margie Constance Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Tarbay From the Danehy’s Jim and Linda Miss Collura Mike Connell Pete Compoli Cherry Nesbit Gary Gustina Mark Boswell Lib and Funi Lee W. King Kong showed what a few dedi- cated individuals can do if they follow their goals to the end. The individual spirit of the varsity basket- ball team combined with the spirit of Chittenango to produce a championship season. This spirit of the Senior Class will live long beyond our years at CCS. A moment of triumph in the individual struggle. Mr. Kirsh has a satisfying moment.
