These twelve years have been marked by rapidly changing times during which people have had to think and act with computer logic; thus seemingly threatening the qualities of imagination, bravery, ardent pursuit of wisdom and kindness. We the 1968 Palladium Staff, have chosen our theme—THE LAND OF OZ—because its author, Lyman Frank Baum and his charac- ters, Dorthy, Scarecrow, and the Tin Woodsman symbolize these qualities to which we strive. All the characters created by Mr. Baum lead us to two significant conclusions: 1) Sincerity of purpose and justice in method result in victory regardless if the goal is obtained or not. 2) Deception will never stand the test of time, truth will always win out. With these thoughts in mind, we present to you 1968 Palladium. THE LAND OF OZ 3 App re cialion Mr. Matina Mr. Kirschenheiter Mr. Reynolds Mr. Kinsella We, the Class of 1968, would like to express our gratitude to these five teachers for giving of their valuable time to advise us in: sports, music, plays, and many other extra-curricular activities. They, along with numerous others, have taught us the goals of: honor, respect, sportsmanship, and the reward of self-assurance. For a job well done, we THANK YOU. 4 Mr. Moore Mrs. Nella G. Pasto Dedication We, the Class of 1968, dedicate this Palladium and all the hard work which has gone into it to Mrs. Nella G. Pasto. Through her teaching of American History, World History, Sociology, Adult Education, Economics, and Citizenship Education she has put forth and given meaning to the qualities of: sensitivity to others, self-discipline, and responsibility. Above all, she has exemplified the meaning to the philosophy: giving of one's self is a reward far better than receiving. 5 Mr. Robert J. Hughes To the Class of 1968: Each year it is a distinct honor and pleasure to congratulate the graduating class upon their accomplishments. You have earned the rights and privileges which accom- pany the high school diploma. You owe it to yourself, your parents, and your com- munity to put these achievements to good use. This diploma qualifies you to aim at higher goals in life. The choice is yours. The way is clear for you to further your edu- cation or occupational objectives according to your own aspirations. Again, may I congratulate you upon graduation and wish you every success in the future. Sincerely, Robert J. Hughes Supervising Principal Mr. Warren E. Jerome Mr. Charles F. Seamans To the Class of 1968: In the fall of 1962 you became the first class to enter the new junior high addition of our present building. I remem- ber that early December day when each of you carried desks, chairs, books, and supplies from the 35 year old Lake Street School to a new building that still needed the finishing touches. This change was accomplished in less than two hours because of your cooperation. Already young people living in an age of change you would see many more such changes that would touch your lives in the years ahead. In a few months you would see America's first man in space. Then shortly after your newest sym- bol of courage would be shot on the streets of a southwestern city. Gradually across America the second chapter of a movement that began in the time of your great-great-great grandfather would be opened to assure the rights of all men. Now finally you will be the fourth high school graduating class in your generation who will be expected to fight a war in a land that occupied very little space in your social studies books. Your preparation for such changing times has come from many sources. We hope that the opportunities to study a comprehensive and liberal curriculum that has changed almost completely since your first days in junior high will help give you a stronger background in the years ahead. Furthermore, the associations you have made, the books you have read, and the thought process in which you have engaged will better equip your minds regardless of down which road you choose to travel. For these changing times are not only a drain on our energies, but a challenge and hope for all who desire an improvement to all our social, economic, and political institutions. The Class of 1968 will always remain a pleasant memory. For it is the first class that has passed completely through the full six years while Mr. Seamans and I have been building administrators. Best wishes to your families and congrat- ulations to each of you. Let us see you again whether it be for a visit or a call for future assistance. With personal congratulations Sincerely, Charles F. Seamans Warren E. Jerome Assistant ]r.-Sr. High School Principal High School Principal 7 John Kentch }6S Jja acfium Staff Wor iecf JIarcf Sitting at my desk, I think of all the work which the staff has done in an attempt to produce the best year- book in C.C.S. history. Starting in early spring, the staff mapped out the first sixteen pages with enthusiasm. Keeping its momentum the staff members carried their work through the summer, planning the layout of the pages and thinking of new ideas to incorporate into our yearbook. In reaching this objective, thanks must be given to many teachers for their help and guidance: Miss Sheehan for her literary assistance, Mrs. Butman for her clerical assistance and Mr. Pashley for his guiding hand in or- ganizing the staff into a working crew. Truly this yearbook is one of change and thanks. Lucy Panebianco Darwin Allen Carol Dammer Pam Alvord Mr. Pashley Sealed left to right: C. Rudd, A. Iaconis, T. Ratnour, J. Kentch, S. Byrne, D. The De- cember 17th moon reflected off the new fallen snow, casting an exotic pale blue ha2e through the night air. Upon entering the school a yellow haze lit the path to the ball room. The revolving blue and red lights danced on the sparkling fountain and bounded off tall swaying palm trees. In the corner, an oriental pagoda stood with its red and blue streamer sides flapping gently in the breeze, waiting for the King and Queen to be crowned. The music of Freddy Vare's Orchestra reverberated softly through the room. Thus, the night of an Exotic Paradise. Your young and eager minds were delivered into the fold of formal education some thirteen years ago, as the fertile seed is delivered to the well prepared land in the spring. As the earth, the sun and the rain provide the basics for plant growth; the books and buildings provided the environment in which your minds have grown. But, as the plant needs cultivation, you needed the knowledge, guidance and encouragement provided by the teachers and staff. So, as the farmer proudly delivers his crops to the market, we, the Board of Education, with pride, graduate you with confidence that the Class of 1968 is certainly the quality product of today's market demands. American Aie d Gera ice Student yu i Jtirano This year, Yuji Hirano has been C.C.S. A.F.S. foreign exchange student. Yuji came Kuwana, Japan, a 'small city of about 70,000 people.' During his stay here Yuji lived with Mr. and Mrs. Paul Taylor, both teachers here at the Chittenango school system. Affectionately called Yuge, he was quite active in school activities. Yuge tried out and made the Junior Varsity football team and became a good punter. Not a bad feat for his first try. Other activities included: ski club and team, chess club, and A.F.S. club. Yuge had, besides being socially inclined, a high academic average. Throughout the community he gave many talks and enriched the minds of the C.C.S. student body of other customs and mannerisms. We wish Yuji much luck in the future and hope he enjoyed his stay here at Chit- tenango as much as we enjoyed having him here. 54 (j ass Jauoriies Mos S uc i'ous John Koegel Carol Lasher This is our song. Mark Abell Alfia Iaconis Where, When ... WOW! 57 ( ass 3 fis to ry The Senior Class of 1968 was organized early in September of 1955 when we attended kindergarten in the different schools in the district. Other students have joined throughout the years as their parents moved to Chittenango to make their home. In 1958, when we were third graders, Bolivar Elementary School was completed. Those students who lived in the area had the privilege of becoming one of the first classes to attend there. But these joyous elementary days passed almost too soon when, in 1962, we became seventh graders. This was a big year for us and one more step toward our future. We the class of 1968, were finally united in one building, the Junior High School, later called the Lake Street Elementary School. We became acquainted with each other and adjusted to the new methods of education. Moving from room to room and teacher to teacher for our class was quite a different experience. Once again, in December of ’62, we were on the move. We soon became a permanent part of the High School in the new Junior High addition. The day we moved was un- forgettable. Filing like pack horses, carrying books, desks and chairs, we made our way up the hill. Suddenly, without warning, it rained. Dashing for cover, we tried to hide from the rain underneath our burdens, books scattering as we scurried along. It was a wet introduction to our new school, but in no way did it dampen our spirits. During the remainder of our two years in Junior High School we began eagerly looking forward to a new beginning with great hopes and enthusiasm. Senior High School was this new horizon. In September of '64 we returned as Freshmen in High School. We soon chose our class officers: Frank Palazzola—President, Larry Willbur—Vice-President, John Koegel— Treasurer, Mary Hiney—Secretary. They led us in our first trying year with much zest We participated in many activities: girls’ and boys’ sports, many organizations, and cheer- leading. As the year passed on we became caught up in the excitement of High School. After a short vacation we returned as Sophomores. Our leaders for that year were: Bob Smith—President, Alfia Iaconis—Vice-President, Carolyn Kitchell—Treasurer, Stephanie Durisek—Secretary. We were represented well throughout the school with Mary Hiney and Frank Palazzola serving with distinction as Secretary and President, respectively, of the Student Council. There were also three students accepted in the Honor Society as probationary members: Donna Smith, Sue Osborne and Karen Storer. The following year, as Juniors we had a foothold at last. Once again we had out- standing leadership with: Don McGee—President, George Darling—Vice-President, Lucy Panebianco—Treasurer, Stephanie Durisek—Secretary. We plunged into class ac- tivities with a candy sale, and with great efforts we move toward what became a very successful Junior Prom. Again there was much participation in sports and extracurricular clubs. Another summer vacation passed and returned this time for our last year. Our officers were: Dave Wafer—President, Candy Rudd—Vice-President, Stuart Byrne—Treasurer Alfia Iaconis—Secretary. We conducted a very successful magazine and Madison County Times sale in addition to our Senior Dinner dance on May 11. LeMoyne Manor was the scene of this much awaited pleasure and merriment. But the most important undertaking of the Class was, by far, the financing and publishing of the Palladium. This indeed was a hard task, but with the support of every member of the Senior Class, it was an accom- plishment. In June graduation will come. We, the members of the 1968 Class, shall look back on the joys and sorrows of our thirteen school years and realize how much we really enjoyed them. But those past thirteen‘years were only one ’brick’ in the long journey on the 'Yellow Brick Road’. UNDERCLASSMEN 59 J. Case, L. Carpenter, J. Beuhler, C. Beeman, S. Benedict M. Farley, L.
