To the Class of 1964: It is always most gratifying to be able to give my very heartiest congratulations to a graduating class. Your class deserves an extra measure of praise due to your tremendous achievements over the past years in Chittenango Central School. We fully realize that your graduation day is not an end in itself but a commencement or a be- ginning of a beautiful future. Whatever your calling, remember Thomas A. Edison once said, I never did anything worth doing by accident; nor did any of my inventions come by accident; they came by work. So be it, neither has your education and achievements thus far been accidental. The efforts and sacrifices by you and your parents and guardians are well worthwhile and commendable as we look back. Let us now look to the future and toward your occupational or educational goals and may I offer every good wish to you in these endeavors. Sincerely yours, Robert J. Hughes Supervising Principal 6 Graduation from high school is the culmination of many things for each student. Effort, time and money has been put forth by many people to make it possible for you to reach this point of graduation. I am sure that you appreciate their efforts, as they have appreciated yours, in making this happy occasion possible. I most sincerely congratulate you and wish you success in your future endeavors. Charles F. Seamans Assistant High School Principal To the Class of '64: The choices you make today become the trav- elled roads of tomorrow. Each decision you have made has had a definite effect on your life in certain ways. While in school your parents and teachers have been readily available to help you arrive at decisions and understandings. Now you take a giant step in the direction of independence. I feel that you go well prepared since the opportunity to make choices has been an important part of your education at Chittenango Central School. Though you may feel you stand alone, try to remember two factors that you learned from the past: (1) the methods used previously to arrive at wise decisions; (2) and the need you may sometime have for advice and counsel of a trusted friend. So as you leave, I extend my sincere congratu- lations and hope that your future judgement will never be imperiled by the major stumbling block of all—that of not believing in oneself. Warren E. Yates, was the main institute of education in Chittenango for over a hun- dred years. Its use was discontinued in 1928, due to the building of a new high school on Lake Street, but because of the important role it played in the development of our com- munity, it will never be forgotten. STANDING: Mr. Smith, Mr. Marquart, Mr. Hale, Mr. Orbeson, Mr. Costanzo SITTING: Dr. McCann, Mr. Henry, Mr. Stucker, Mr. Durfee Dear Class of 1964, You have asked me what the Board of Education has accomplished in the past year. This is not an easy question to answer, for it may be years before we really know what we have accomplished. First, we presented a budget to the school district's people which they ac- cepted. We then hired administrators, teachers, maintenance workers, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, and clerical personnel to carry out the education program. The buildings have been maintained, heated, lighted, and furnished. Examples of such furnishings have been physical education equipment for the gymnasiums and playfields, instruments and music for music classes, library books, certain textbooks, science equipment and usable supplies. Also, school buses have been purchased and maintained to transport pupils who live too far from school to walk. Furthermore, additional reading and guidance personnel have been added to help each of you solve your particular learning problems. The Board of Education has written policies so that the administrators can more easily follow the direction in which we hope to move. Along this line the Board of Education has worked continually with the school staff to solve the numerous problems that arise in a system of this size. Yet, Graduates of 1964, these may be all minor accomplishments when con- sidering the whole picture, our greatest accomplishment this year is you. For you see, of all of the things we do, the one that is the most important is to make it possible for you to graduate and go on to a richer, more satisfying life in our democratic society. This was the beginning of the Class of '64. We were spread all over the district—in the churches throughout the area and the Bridgeport Grange Hall. These early years of our education were years of movement. For the next two years those of us in Chittenango continued to attend classes in the churches and the Municipal Building. Then, in January of 1954, we moved into the Lake Street School, which at that time housed classes up to the eighth grade. Meanwhile, those of us in the Chittenango Station area had moved from kinder- garten in the churches into the grades at the Station Annex. The remainder of the group, those who lived in Bridgeport, attended the Bridgeport Elementary School. In 1958, when we were seventh-graders, the Lake Street School became the junior high school, housing only seventh and eighth-graders, while the lower grades were moved into the new build- ing at Bolivar. The year 1958 was a big year for us—we, the members of the Class of '64, were all together in one building for the first time. We became acquainted with each other and with the new methods of education. We became used to moving from room to room and from teacher to teacher for our different classes. We spent our two years in junior high school getting used to many things and preparing for the work we knew lay ahead for us in high school. In September of 1960 about one hundred and twenty of us entered the still-new high school as trembling Freshmen. We soon chose our officers—Kate Lawson, President, Jim Naylor, Vice-Presi- dent, Nancy Sorenson, Secretary, and Jim Herrick, Treasurer—to lead us in our first year of high school. We participated in many activities—girls' and boys' sports, the extracurricular clubs, and J.V. cheerleading. We began vague plans for our senior trip, and soon found ourselves caught up in the whirl of high school. After a short vacation we returned to school as Sophomores. Our leaders for the year were Bruce Grasmeyer, President, Sue Stucker, Vice-President, Jim Naylor, Secretary, and Jim Herrick, Treasurer. We were well-represented on the athletic teams, in the music department, in the other extracur- ricular activities, and on the Honor Roll. Five of us entered the Honor Society as probationary mem- bers. We continued our class activities with a dance and a candy sale. Following another short vacation, we returned as Juniors, mighty upperclassmen at last. Our officers were Jim Naylor, President, Pete Henry, Vice-President, Anne Cassell, Secretary, and Anna Muir, Treasurer. Our Junior year was a year of activity. We were again well-represented on the athletic teams, in extracurricular activities, and on the Honor Roll. Four more of us were in- ducted into the Honor Society. We sold Christmas cards and candy, and we had a very successful Junior Prom. As our last activity, we sponsored the music department's first production, Finian's Rainbow. Most of us took part in the production in one way or another. It was the highlight of our Junior activities. After another short vacation we again returned to school, this time for the last time. We were led by class officers John Norlund, President, Jon DeFrees, Vice-President, Sally Vaske, Secretary, and Gail Metz, Treasurer. As Seniors, we engaged in activities at almost every stroke of the clock. We worked long and hard in preparation for our senior trip to Washington, which took place April 1 through April 4, and for graduation in June. We were well-represented on all the athletic teams and in all the extracurricular activities. Two more of us were inducted into the Honor Society, and many others kept their places on the Honor Roll. We conducted a successful maga- zine and newspaper sale, a ham dinner, and a candy sale, in addition to our Senior Ball on May 23. In June we are to graduate. As we look back on our years in school, we realize that we have come not from kindergarten to graduation, but from kindergarten to commencement. These thirteen years have been hard for most of us, but the years ahead will be much more difficult. We look back on the memories of the past with pleasure, and look ahead to the future with expectation and determination. 51 s A. oenior xiiccomp listi mem is WAYNE ALLEN Chess Club 1, 2 GREGORY ALVORD Audio-Visual 1, 2, 3, 4 Chess Club 3, 4 Science Club 1, 2, 3, 4 Math Club 1, 2, 3, 4 Colgate Seminar 3, 4 Science Research Group 2, 3, 4 Cornell Research 2 Colgate Summer Seminar 1, 2, 3 Football 2, 3, Manager 4 Basketball Manager 3, 4 RICHARD BARDEN Business Club 4 Basketball Manager 4 JO ANN BENNETT Whispers 3 Chorus-Girls' 1, 2, 3 Senior Play 4 Powder Puff Football 4 INGRID BENNEKOU Honor Roll Colgate Seminar Senior Play French Club G.A.A. They have done so much to help us, both in obtain- ing our education, and in growing to be better per- sons. We are grateful to them and hope that in the future, as the extent of their influence upon us becomes more obvious, they may continue to help other stu- dents. MR. DEUEL MISS HODEL In 1952, the new high school for the district was built. It was the first building to which the newly centralized dis- trict of Chittenango, Bridgeport, Lakeport, North Chittenango, and Sullivan sent their students of high school age. Since its beginning, it has seen many changes in the community, in- cluding an addition to itself. 57 Ronald Centner James Connell Norene DeMario Sharon Davis Christine Emerson Bonnie Dean James Donato Donna Cain Joy Corp Edward Knickerbocker Kathleen Petrie Ellen Stinger Barbara Troup Mary Kimball Judy Shephard Kathleen Shoemaker Laura Shearer Betty Stodgell Michael Locke Daniel Hubbs Anita Williams Paul Murray Paul Sullivan Richard Shaughnessy Herman Wahl Christopher Ackinson Richard DeForest Michael Jones Sandra Campbell Cynthia Griffith A S J Michele Kelsey Susan Havens Ronald Valerio u Joseph Vaske Marion West a n i • i u t o Theodore Hepp T Donna Namitz Gayle Wood e Helen Pattison c Herbert Pattison t © Barbara Sforza t George Steele Linda Markle s Gary Southard I Stanley Wiley e 58 Fredrick Webb John Smith June Worthley Sandra Marsh Susan Schadd Eileen Schardt Diane Green Mary Hall Bertha Riccardo Rose Marie Paone Maureen Kinahan Betty Lesnau Juliana Hogar Virginia Hale Marcia Schenk Gary Allen Scott Bowen Richard Brandt David Christopher Wayne Breed James Carpenter Robert Brownell Albert Boccaccio Margaret Bitz Lorrene Bixby Ellen Scott Lawrence Petrie Heidi Peterson Raymond Haynie Regina Ostrowski Walter Morgan Donna Muth Mary Murphy Edward Thune Carol Worthley Christine Carpenter Diane Bloss Barbara Benedict Thomas Cooper Lee Champney Judy Alvord Rosanne Button Allen Audas Robert Beige Drew Anguish Richard Killian Alan LaRock Raymond Heydet Gregory Sagehorn Margaret Jones Barbara Harrington Patricia Groff Leonard Ward Daniel Hiney Bruce Walrath Sharon Cunningham Bruce Cramer David Damon Randolph Colvin Rosemary Falsey Robert Dibble Gail Donegan Kathryn Curran Lynda Barton Charles Gardner Elizabeth Brown Kathleen Allen Patricia Barbagallo Patricia Cone Susan Bickelhaupt Linda Gregory Cheryl Carmen Jean Altmire Christopher Dammer Ronald Figgins We, the class of '64, take this opportunity to salute the Junior class. Starr file F resin mam t Iass of 1960 In 1962, construction was begun On the addition to the high school building. Since December of 1963, the original building has housed grades 9-12, and the main part of the addition has housed grades 7 and 8. Many new fields of education have also been added with new, modern equip- ment in use. This building is today one of the largest schools in this area, capable of instructing over 1200 pupils. It is with great regret that the Class of 1964 leaves this building this year and advances to other experiences in living. We know that other classes that pass through her halls will feel the same way as their time of graduation draws near. BOTTOM ROW, L. to R.: Mr. Rhodes, B. Chapman, K. Lawson, B. Grasmeyer, R.
