Probably the most moving and educational experience in our school's history was encountered by the group of music students who toured Romania this past summer. Their purpose was to travel throughout the country and convey a message of friendship through their songs. Many friends were made, plenty of new thoughts and ideas were discovered, a whole new way of life was explored, and an unaccountable amount of knowledge was earned - all providing a unique and valuable experience to the students who went. The trip was sponsored by an organization called Friendship Ambassadors who select college and high school groups to go abroad to the communistic countries and show their friendship and desires for peace. Friendship Ambassadors made the arrangement and helped pay for some of the expenses of the group. For the most part, howeverg the members of the choir had to raise the money to finance the trip themselves. Most members would agree that even though the trip was expensive it was well worth it. When asked what was the most important thing that the students learned, they replied, to appreciate our own country and its freedom. Seeing how other countries are governed made the students value what they had at home. Another moving experience was the actual performing the group did for the Romanian people. The group totaled sixty-two people, including chaperones, and was hailed wherever they went. Their music was applauded and their independent spirit envied. To ,the Romanian people the group was more than the songs they sang - they were the American way of life. These symbols have much meaning to the Romanian peopleg the three X's re present three decades of communism and the star represents the communistic government's control. A shepherd herds his sheep across a bridge holding up traffic. This is an example of the precise order and care of the Romanian cities. The people value nature and its beauty greatly. A Romanian lady draws water from the village well showing the simple life her people live. The fanciest bathroom in town - complete with livestock. Director Ellen Bowen conducts the choir in one of their many performances. IlElllElllEllIElll'
