Once you know yourself, you will be better equipped to make the decisions, to face the challenges, and to tolerate the stresses that the future will bring. However, to know the total you isa very difficult and extensive job. The total you includes your emotions, goals, feelings, problems, needs, desires, and values - all the things that make you a unique person. Knowing yourself will give you self-confidence and assurance. Once you know yourself, you will be able to understand others and life in general better. Exploring your emotions and goals will lead you to determine what you really want out of life. Then you will be able to put things in their proper perspective. What you learn from the experience of school depends upon how much you apply yourself. How quickly you learn about yourself and your needs and goals depends on you and the experiences that lead to personal growth that you encounter. veth t You have available to you all the tools necessary for your learning experience - all you have to do is use them. That may seem easier than it really is for learning to use the tools takes plenty of time and effort. The tools can be whatever you find works best for you whether it be individual help from a teacher, experimentation, vocational techniques, or simply learning from other students. The media from which you choose to learn can be one of these or a combination. Whatever the tools may be, chances are they can be found in school. The question is: Will they be discovered. However, so many students fail to recognize them. The tools are here, you just have to know where and how to find them. Try looking around you at your fellow students and teachers. These people have a lot to share and you may learn from them by observing their examples. Another place to look may seem quite obvious, yet is overlooked by many - the classroom. A class is a group of students being instructed by a teacher on a common subject. Not only can you use the teacher, books, from which to learn, etc., but you can learn exactly how to learn by watching the techniques the teacher employs to bring across his point and the different way each individual learns. Besides in the classroom, there are many other places you can learn. Out on the football field, on the school stage, at an art show, at a club meeting, or at another school activity. The list of places is endless and the spot that you choose as being best for you will be different from the next student because you are unique. When you find your special place, never wander far from it. Nw Wm-' AUM' NM , wi! One rm W ff H +- class Probably the most moving and educational experience in our school's history was encountered by the group of music students who toured Romania this past summer. Their purpose was to travel throughout the country and convey a message of friendship through their songs. Many friends were made, plenty of new thoughts and ideas were discovered, a whole new way of life was explored, and an unaccountable amount of knowledge was earned - all providing a unique and valuable experience to the students who went. The trip was sponsored by an organization called Friendship Ambassadors who select college and high school groups to go abroad to the communistic countries and show their friendship and desires for peace. Friendship Ambassadors made the arrangement and helped pay for some of the expenses of the group. For the most part, howeverg the members of the choir had to raise the money to finance the trip themselves. Most members would agree that even though the trip was expensive it was well worth it. When asked what was the most important thing that the students learned, they replied, to appreciate our own country and its freedom. Seeing how other countries are governed made the students value what they had at home. Another moving experience was the actual performing the group did for the Romanian people. The group totaled sixty-two people, including chaperones, and was hailed wherever they went. Their music was applauded and their independent spirit envied. To ,the Romanian people the group was more than the songs they sang - they were the American way of life. EIIUIIEJIIEIIIEIIIEIIIEIIVGIIElllE1llElllFJllFllllElllUIlElIlElllElllElllE'lllEllEl Unforgetable I Experience There are many monasteries throughout Romaniag this one being the National Church. These symbols have much meaning to the Romanian peopleg the three X's re present three decades of communism and the star represents the communistic government's control. A shepherd herds his sheep across a bridge holding up traffic. This is an example of the precise order and care of the Romanian cities. The people value nature and its beauty greatly. A Romanian lady draws water from the village well showing the simple life her people live. The fanciest bathroom in town - complete with livestock. Director Ellen Bowen conducts the choir in one of their many performances. A bus stop in the country provided this breath taking scenery. What's Going Cn Today? Putting it all together must include our surroundings. The environment has an unaccountable effect on an individual both psychologically and biologically. Our connnunhy, sunoundmgs and counuy determine our total make-up. Movies, famous people and events influence us like some of this year's influencing factors: the death of Elvisg the movie Star Warsg the Farrah poster crazes and CB radios. Everyone enjoyed wearing a favorite pair of overalls on Overall Day, wearing hats andeating lollipops on Hat and Lollipop Day, dressing up for Class Color Day, and of course the battle for which class would win Chain Day. Well, the Sophomores won it with 3,301 chain links. As the week came to a close, the cheerleaders put on a great pep rally and Friday night the classes competed against each other in Powder Puff Football, tug of war, bigwheel races, three legged races and the egg toss. When the troupe was awarded the first place trophy this time, they became the first high school in Macomb County to win the district competition three consecutive years. ln addition, their production of Dark of the Moon earned seven superior awards. The individual awards were for superior acting, make-up, costume design, and set design. ln the critique session, which is conducted by three university theatre professors, Chippewa was praised for their professional approach towards all phases of theatre and for their courage in attempting a sophisticated and difficult selection. The troupe however, was.not the only winner this year. The high school drama directors throughout the state honored Chippewa's own director, Miss Stephanie Konrad, by electing her to the State Board of Drama Directors for a two year term. Miss Konrad was opposed by Southfield-Lathrup's director. This is the first time in twelve years that a high school director from Macomb County has been chosen for this position. Neither the Drama Club nor the director have had much time to enjoy their winnings, for almost all of the cast members are involved in forensic competition. They will be travelling to places as: Stephenson High School, Brighton High School, Seaholm High School and Birch Run High School for competitions. Two trophies have already been captured at the 3gDearborn Edsel Ford Tournament. lt just may also be a record breaking forensic season for the pattern has certainly been established by these dedicated, talented and committed young adults. The Drama Club as well as the Forensic Team have brought to Chippewa High School respect and recognition. lt is a reflection of the pride these students have in their high school land its excellent programs. As one member stated, It becomes 'increasingly obvious to us as we travel to other schools, just how fortunate we are to be a part of Chippewa's terrific speech qprogram. In fact, 200 of them went at least once and 50 qualified for the special Chippewa Valley ski patch for going five or more times. The Ski Club sponsors, Mr. Weits, Mr. Kennedy, and Mr. Shanbeck, said the skiing turnout was the best in two years. This was mainly due to the large amount of snow which fell often and stayed on the ground. Skiing is a unique sport at Chippewa because it is the only one that does not have competition in any form. lt is done purely for fun. It also requires no constant attendance. In September they received a special invitation to meet and interview the cast from the broadway production of Hello Dolly. Soon after this experience the members changed roles from interviewers to audience. The club went to see jesus Christ Superstar at Masonic Auditorium. Then the members resumed their favorite roles as actors, actresses and crew as they have been busily rehearsing for their production. lt was a special honor this year to be presenting the first fullscale play in the new auditorium. The club chose to do a favorite American comedy, You Can't Take it With You . This three act play was presented Thursday and Friday nights Dec. lst and 2nd at 8:00 p.m. Being a member of Drama Club demands enormous commitmentg rehearsal schedules simply don't leave the members with much energy or time to do much else. The one thing that binds the club together is also responsible for motivating their total involvement and that is the love of theatre. As music is a form of communication, it requires expression and precision in order to be effective. Students are taught to put emotion into their songs and to appeal to the audience. Without these expressions the music is meaningless and cold. Stage techniques and self control are learned through performing. A unique experience that is available to the Madrigal Ensemble is the chance to perform frequently for the community. As Madrigals is a small group they usually all pile into Director Mrs. Bowen's van and head for a hospital, cluq, or other types of organizations or institutions to perform. The other choirs perform at the more formal programs. It takes more coordination to produce a harmonic sound from so many people. Some specific activities of this year's choirs included a tour of Chicago and Indiana, a Christmas concert, a Fall Follies performance, and the production of an all school musical. Just Beg1nn1ng EN FRESHMEN FRESHMEN FRESHMEN FRESHMEN FRESHMEN FRESHM F ESHME Beginning to put something together, whether it be a project, a puzzle, or even the copy for this yearbook, is the most difficult part. It takes motivation to get started and enthusiasm to keep on going. Once the foundation is laid, however, the rest is easy. The freshman year is the very foundation for putting together life's pieces. It is here in the beginning of one's education that one learns the skills that will be used in the future. One obtains the study habits that will be used over and over again. One learns to adapt to a new situationg in the freshman's case, a new schoolg and to change to fit in with others. One is laying the path that will later, hopefully, take him to success. These and other things one learns are practice for the real world. How one reacts in these first situations will reflect upon how one will react in future situations. This original learning experience will determine one's future. 173 3 Fresh Face Challenges with a Smile SHMEN FRESHMEN FRESHMEN A . 5. 1 1 14111, ,1'1,11'l , ' J 1 1 11. 111 w11.1..11i11,1 we rr gf 1 f , W 1 N 1M 1 .1:'1ffXB 0 nk I l ,. 111 11.1111 L! in x i NN'N Q 5 4 ,mfsgl David Allen Scott Aldous Mark Allen Mike Alvia George Grzywacz 174 1 1 YW' X ' 1 11 1 ,1 ' 31 1 '31 1 1' 1 ' , 1 lv 4241 'A '- V' ' ' 11 , H 1 WET, , A 1 1 1 ,N 11111. 1 1 ' N111 -1, ' ' '12 ' 11 - ,1 111111 111-9151111 1 M11 .111 . 1 ,, 1 , 1, -, . . 3 11.4 51116 l 1 X M , 1 'Z 1' X 1 , 1 11 11411 N F 1. 1 1 MW ,A,y,i5,f'l- M 1111 ' ' K I ' U' ' , . 1 f:.'.'.L.:5:.h1' A. islam 14 1 W' Y l 1-1 X , 1,-1.
