Pugm' Twenty-six Senior Class l think we eau all remember the year of 1951, when we first entereml Senior Iligh. At that time we were all a little shy, but it mliclu't take us long: to get acquainted with the school and the upper classmen aml show them that we too hail school spirit. As sophomores, we took part in many activities, such as Thespians, G.A.A., Pep Cluh, llauml, l .l .A., Monoele, Chatter, Student Council and Chorus. When we beeame juniors we were used to the life at Senior High and took part in almost every activity that we eoulcl, Our muscular boys reylresented us on the foot- hall field, as well as the basketball floor. The biggm-st event of the year was the prom, with King Bill Kroll and Queen Carol Otto reigwiiug. The theme was South Pacific, anil the gym was beautifully decorated. Those two years went. hy mighty fast and when we reeeiveml our class rings in the fall, we realizecl that we were to be Seniors. Our last year at Senior High was a happy one and will holcl many memories for each of us. Inelumlerl in these will he the Senior Class Play, Family Cirele, the Senior Tea and Picnic. The hipfhlight on the list of memories was g'ra4luation night. This was the last event we took part in at Senior lligrh anml was sail in that manner, hilt it also gave us a ehauee to go out into the worlcl anil show what we can clo. Iverson. l':igr Twenty-eiglit Class Prophecy June 4, 1963 Miss Eileen Ricksford Cairo, Egypt Dear Itsy I am sorry that you were unable to attend our 1953 Class Reunion because of your important missionary work in Africa. The reunion was held at the Empire Cate owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Ray Elwood. Mrs. Ray Elwood was the former Joyce Kaphingst. Catfish Crawford, act- ing as chief chef assisted by Dick Hoover, served Jim Campbell's specialty, Pork and Beans. Harlan Gutknecht and Walter Katz, because of their grocery establishment, donated the steak. For dessert we had Sylvia Harper's Fuddy Nut Whip. Bob and Ione Klinger offered to furnish meat from their fox farm, but Meat Inspector, Earl Melville, prohibited it. Acting as waitresses were: Pat Neitzel, Audrey Olson, Adeline Roder, and Lou Ann Harris. The following persons were unable to come to the reunion because of their work with Uncle Sam: Roger Iverson, Frank Aasen, Delmar Blank, Tom Brick, and Galen Decker. To start the entertainment Gordon Hallum, Master of Ceremonies, praised Lee Kjorlien and Alonzo Johnson who are running for Mayor of Chippewa Falls. Next on the program was Bill Smith's delayed conservation speech. For the musical part of the entertainment, the Smith Sisters gave their revised rendition of Down In Bermuda and Katherine Mcllquham, accom- panied by Marion Aude on the piano, tap-danced. The main event of the evening was the melo- drama, directed by Don Peterson, with Jeanette Matthews as leading lady and Ron Meyer, Mary Benson, and Francis Grammont in supporting roles. During the melodrama, Larry Gannon suf- fering from a toothache was comforted by Dental Assistant, Berdella Zillmer. The last on the pro- gram was Claudette Miller, who read a chapter from her newly written book, The Temperance Movement. After the entertainment, I was talking to some of our classmates. I think you will be interested to know what some of them are doing: Chuck Class BOB LANGILL wills his noon hour radio program to David Presfsler and Dick Mcllquham. JOANNE BERGI-:RON wills her nickname Frenchy to her little sister Yvonne. DICK LOWATER wills his seat in English IV to any- one big enough to fill it. Berg is planning a trip to Africa on his next furlough, Carol Warner is appearing in the opera, Carmen, Delores Chrystal is the Diete- tics Advisor at the University of Wisconsin, Margie White is the new proprietor of the White House Inn, Phil Cardinal and Elton Smith are competing for head librarian of the Chippewa Library, Jim Gessner is the president of the Alcholics Anonymousg Rev. Ernest Huth is the new preacher of a church in Irelandg Bob Meslow and Bill Kroll just finished their tour with the House of David, Ron Severn just finished his seventh year as Superintendent of the Northern Wisconsin Training Schoolg Dorothy Ocasek, Carol Otto, and Elsie Anderson just returned from Honolulu where they were nursing an epi- demic of mumps. They reported that one of the patients was Harold Shilha, who is a life guard in Hawaii. Due to the fact that Bill Stiles, founder of Stiles Cigar Company, passed samples around, the air was filled with smoke. Bob Yates and Ed Bathke solved the problem with their latest in- vention - Smoke RemoveI'. Gene Korn's Korny Six supplied the music in the Empire Ball Room managed by Herman Schemenauer. The Korny Six consisted of Caro- lyn Klemke, Nancy Bateman, Austin Fray, Gor- don Anderson, and Sandra Thomas. Near the close of our reunion, Ernie Dage- ford gave a toast for our next reunion to be just as successful. I have to close now because my favorite pro- gram the Bob and Ray Show is on television and after which there is a meeting of the Athena of which I am the advisor. As you've probably heard the Bob and Ray Show consists of Bob Schneider and Ray Cohoon, who are still using the same slogan, write if you get work and hang by your thumb. Love, Jan P.S. Write me when Chuck arrives. He was wor- ried about the new wing-less plane that he was going to fly in, which was invented by Ray Mower. The Sophomore Class As in previous years a new sophomore class has made their debut in the halls of Chippewa High, many of whom have proven that they.are capable of carrying on the standards of Chi-Hi. Out of a class of 183, a good number of the members contributed to our outstanding' athletic departmentg also, many expressed their interest in Thespians, Band, Chorus, G.A.A., F.F.A., F.H.A., Forensics and other school activities. Members of the Sophomore Student Council were Diane Bushland, Patricia Schmidt, Bill Flanagan, David Pressler, Raymond Holte, Janet Olson, and Eleanor Henneman. Next year we will enter school as juniors and we will do our best to maintain the high standards of our school and remain loyal to the red and white. Pitsch and Kroll scored the touchdowns for the Cards. After this game there was much optimism among the Red and White, and a good season was expected. As it turned out, the Cards didn't live up to expectations. They played Bloomer the following week and for the first time in many years the Cards were favored. However, the Red and White were whitewashed 26-0. Chippewa was never in the ball game and the Hawks kept piling it on to avenge the defeat the Cards hung on them last year. Chippewa was expected to bounce back against Menomonie, but it just wasn't in the books. We were beaten by a score of 21-6, but the score could have been closer except for a few breaks. A fumble and a pass interception halted the Cards deep in Menomonie's territory to prevent the Cards from scoring. Kroll finally scored in the fourth period to give Chippewa its points. The Red and White played Marinette next and were soundly trounced 27-0. The Cards played a good game except for several lapses which Ma1'inette took ad- vantage of by turning them into touchdowns. Chippewa put a record of one tie and three losses to their Homecoming encounter with Rice Lake. The Cards finally crashed the win column by downing the Warriors 25-6. Kroll and Hayes each had two touchdowns. Chippewa played La Crosse after Rice Lake and were really trounced. The final score was 46-0. The score was a respectable 13-0 in the fourth quarter and the play fell in, La Crosse scoring five very quick touchdowns to complete the rout. The next game brought up the Old Abes from Eau Claire. The Old Abes were heavy favorites, but after the smoke cleared away they could take home only a 7-6 victory over the Cards. Chippewa scored a touchdown on a pass from Meslow to Gannon and Kroll scored the extra point, but the play was nullified. The Cards still had a 6-0 lead which suddenly wasn't there. Bowman of Eau Claire ran back the kick- off 98 yards for a touchdown and the Old Abes converted to make the extra point and what turned out to be the winning point. Chippewa played Winona for the game of the season. The score was 14-0 in favor of Winona. Winona scored touchdowns in the second and fourth quarters to take the win. Thus a rather poor season for the Cards ended with one win, five losses and one tie. Tennis Tennis was revived this year, and the Cards had one letterman from the '51 season, Bill Stiles back. However, freshman Bill Elstran pushed Stiles hard for the number one position. The other squad members were Bob Gumm, Maurice Rice, Ray Cahoon, Sam Cardinal, and John Meslow. The netters opened the season by defeating Regis at Eau Claire 4-3. They dropped their second match to the Old Abes of Eau Claire by the same score. Prospects look bright for finishing the season with a better record than any other team since coach O'Brien has been here. This Page Thru Courtesy of: ZUTTER ELEVATORS, INC. The Cards had outstanding players among the seniors, namely, Meslow, Kroll, Severn, and Elwood. These boys were backed up by some ve1'y fine juniors, who promise to give Chippewa a good team for the coming season. These are Salling, Hagen, Prince, and Buhrow. Chippewa opened the season at home by playing Cornell and defeating them by a score of 50-46. Follow- ing this game, the Cards played Bloomer in one of the most thrilling games ever played in the Junior High Gym. The game was finally won by Bloomer 80-74. The Red and White bounced back to beat Spooner in the next game, coming from behind, to win 60-57. Chippewa traveled down the river to Eau Claire for the next encounter and were nudged by the Old Abes, 50-49. Next, Chippewa played Spring Valley and de- feated them in a well-played game 68-42 to make the Card's Won and Lost rating - 4 wins and 2 losses. Chippewa made an overnight trip to Marinette for the next game, and were soundly trounced 85-47, but a bright spot was that Meslow pumped in 30 points to lead all scoring. The team traveled to Menomonie and absorbed a 73-60 defeat at the hands of the Indians. The flu bug struck the team and the undermanned Cardinals showed their fighting spirit as they played Stevens Point on the home court. With no team having more than a six point lead, the Cards finally lost 68-65 in a very exciting game. Chippewa played Cornell for the second time and beat them in an overtime game 57-55 at Cornell. The team traveled to Spring Valley to play their first game under the new coach, Orris Boettcher, after coach McGuire's departure to Ashland and defeated them 73-53 in the second meeting of the season. Playing Rice Lake for the second time also, Chippewa defeated them 76-64. The second game with the Old Abes! Chippewa was sure they could beat the Novak men but they were all Season downed in a very dull game by the score of 74-53. The Cardinals lost their next encounter with Bloomer being trounced by the count of 67-46. The Red and White seemed to bounce back from this defeat in a game with Menomonie, but the Cards still took a lick- ing in another thriller by the score of 66-58. The Red and White traveled to Ladysmith for a make-up game and trounced the Lumber Jacks 79-68. Bob Meslow set a new Chi Hi record with an amazing 44 points. Chippewa picked up a game with Chetek and won it in a rough-tough battle 70-63. In another pick-up game against River Falls, which was played at Spring Valley, the Cards pulled an upset, downing the Falcons 69-68. Chippewa now had one more game left before the tournament and they dropped it to a fine Ladysmith team in a thriller, 64-63. Meslow led the Cards scoring with 26 points, but Morgan outscored him with a neat 31 points. Chippewa, with a season record of 10 wins and 9 losses, faced a fine Colfax five in the opening tourna- ment game at Eau Claire. The Red and White out- scored them from the field, but the Cards had 31 fouls called against them which meant defeat. They were defeated by Colfax 57-55. The Cards played Stanley the next night for a chance for the consolation title and romped all over Stanley downing them 74-46. This put Chippewa in the consolation finals against Mondovi. The Cards were outplayed and outmaneuvered to take a 62 to 50 loss. Bill Kroll was the only bright spot for the Cards, pumping in 18 points. Bob Meslow set a new individual scoring record for the season with a total of 507 points. He also set a record score for an individual game of 44 points. Another interesting factor was that he scored 117 points in 5 games with an average score-per-game record for the season of 23.04. The previous high scor- ing record for Chippewa High was 468 points for the season, set by big Ed Willke. The Junior High School band also marched. Floats, made by various Senior High organizations comprised the parade. The Thes- pian Float, The Plays the Thing, won first place. The Commercial Club and F.H.A. won second and third. Before the game, Homecoming Queen Linda Lea was crowned by Dale Walter, for- mer Chi Hi athlete, in the absence of Marvin Luedtke, last year's football captain, Her attendants, Judith Gebhard, Barbara Harper, and Claudette Miller were all presented to fans in pre-game ceremonies. Claudette's attendants were, Carol Warner escorted by Dennis John- son and Dorothy Ocasek escorted by Ronald Severn. The theme was Skater's Waltz. The decorations corresponded to the theme. Life size figures of girls and boys skating were tacked to the wall with bars of music separat- ing each set of figurines. The pine tree was located in the middle of the Hoor, which was covered with artifical snow with its peak point- ed toward the middle of a large yellow moon. coming crowd roared its approval, the Cardinal football team rolled to a 25 to 7 victory over Rice Lake's undefeated team. Between halves the crowd was entertained by the Cardinal Band and Cadettes, who staged a precision marching exhibition depicting various modes of transportation through the years, forming a horse, a bicycle built for two, a railroad handcar, and an airplane as the band played appropriate music. The activities were ended by a Homecom- ing Dance, which also turned out to be a Victory Dance at Junior High. Jimmy Knight supplied the music for this Pep Club spon- sorled dance that really wound things up rig t. Formal To make the thing more realistic, in one corner of the pond was a large crack in the ice with the typical cracked ice warning sign. Tree branches also hung down from the balcony. Blue streamers leading from the moon to the balcony railing served as the sky. During the grand march dozens of snow fiakes fell from the moon to the tree. Many of these were secured by the dancers as keep- sakes of the prom. The floor show consisted of the singing of the theme song by Dick Lowater, dances by Evelyn Knight's dancing pupils and a fine dis- play of tumbling, also done by one of the dancing students. Senior Class Play The Senior Class Play this year was Family Circle. It was a comedy in three acts, written by Cornelia Otis Skinner. Cornelia, portrayed by Claudette Miller, is a young girl of seventeen. She trys to prove her acting ability throughout the play, but her mother, fNilah Naborj, and her father, Games Paulsonj, who were both former theatre stars, seem to think that she is still a child and that she has no acting ability. Charlie, played by Bob Langill, is very much fascinated by Cornelia, but he never does quite understand her. Others in the cast are Carol Dinkel, Carol Otto, Carol Krause, Carol Warner, Sandra Thomas, Elton Smith, Dick Lowater, Guy Hutchinson, and Curtis Miller. Miss Johnson deserves much credit for her work and patience in making the play a success. The stage crew also deserves a lot of credit. Pep Band This year, during: football season, the Pep Rand was eomprised of about twenty-five mem- bers. That number was a little too large to send to the basketball gxanies so when basketball season rolled around two pep bands were formed of about fifteen members each. One band was headed bv Marion Mueller and the other by Dick Lowater. When the season first began, the two captains QI l x 1 ll flipped coins to see who would play at the first frame. From then on the bands alternated. All Pep Rand members feel that it is a great honor to have been chosen to play at games and try to keep up their part of the bargain by bringing' more school spirit to the pep meetings and games. They really do a very splendid job of it too. l'l'1l' BAND Frfmt Row: .l. liziphingst, ill. Muenieh, ll. Vzitrie, Il. johnson, li. Smith. .Ind Row: l'. I'r.-sion, ll. lliirler, N. Debate This season found the high school debators of Wisconsin discussing the proposition, Resolved: That the Atlantic Pact nations should form a federal union. Twelve debators propounded the pros and cons of this vital and interesting question. For the A squad, Patricia Preston and Claudette Miller took the affirmative side while Carol Dinkel and Edwin Rathke upheld the negative position. Jim Larson and Joyce Kaphingst acted as alter- nates. The other debators were as follows: Nancy Haier, Hill Elstran, Judy Froberg, Myrna Hai'ck, Kay Hawkins, and llavid Pressler. The A squad ended the season with many honors. At the New Richmond Mixed Tournament and the Merrill Invitational, Chippewa High came in third of all the schools entered. At the La Crosse Tournament, Pat Preston was awarded a medal for placing second in Individual Speaking. We were given a first place at Gustavus Adolphus and fourth place at the National Forensic League Tournament in Merrill. The only heart-breaking time of the whole year was the Chippewa Sec- tional, where we won only three out of six de- bates, disqualifying us for the State Tournament. One of our freshman, Myrna Harck, won honors by placing second in Individual Speaking at the Freshman-Sophomore Debate Tournament. It was agreed on by all the debators that we have had a. pretty wonderful year, even if we didn't go to the State-. Mr. Joseph Zoeller, Junior High English Instructor, coached this year's squad. Pep Club Approximately T0 students of Chi Hi make up the Pep Club. These students try to promote good school spirit at our games, pep meetings and other school sponsored activities. They sell ice cream bars at games and put on skits at pep meetings. Pep Club members also sponsor the big homecoming dance and decorations. The school buses you see leaving Junior High for out-of-town games are secured by this club also. This year, as in previous years, the club was supervised by Miss Genevieve Johnson. Hats oil' to Miss Johnson and Barbara Harper, l'ep Club president, for doing a fine job this year. This Page Thru f'o14rfesyof2 PI-IALEN 81 POPPLE PLUMBING Sz HEATING l':ige Sixty-siw l 'sr 1 . rv?
