Besides their many traditional activities, they replaced the sign in front of the school. This year the Chipley High School Student Council sponsored the first annual Christmas Ball and the election of the Christmas King and Queen. The Ball was considered a big success and the 1969-70 Student Council will be long remembered for their hard work and determination in present- ing this event. Mr. Otha Reddick, a math teacher and com- puter advisor at Chipley High School, is the spon- sor of the Student Council. Under the excellent guidance of Mr. Reddick, the officers, along with the members of our student government, strive for the betterment of our school. Future Teachers sponsored annual car wash Future Teachers of America was established by NEA in 1937 as a cooperative project of its affiliated state and local associations. In February, 1955, the NEA assigned the responsibility for the movement to its National Commission on Teacher Education and Professional Standards. The ideal FTA club program is exploratory. It will help the student measure his own abilities and interests in relation to the opportunities and responsibilities in teaching. The club’s activities started off with the building of a Homecoming float. The annual car wash started the fund-raising campaign. Funds raised were put to use in helping to pay for the new bleachers. The highlight of the year was FTA Week, which was observed during April. First row: Cindy Young, Nell Baxley, Mary Ruth Farrior, Martha Wood, Kathy McDaniel, and Jane Stott. These qualities are scholarship, service, character, and leadership. In order to become a member of this group, one must possess all of these qualities. The new members of the National Honor Society were inducted in a very impressive ceremony at the beginning of the school year. The theme of the ceremony was “Knights of Sir Honor’s Court”. Speeches were made by old members of the National Honor Society and each new member was formally dubbed into the society. The sponsor of the NHS is Miss Sandra Boucher. She has introduced many fresh new ideas to the students of Chipley High and all her students appreciate her leadership. More of their projects were devoted to money-making rather than direct service. However, the money made was donated immediately where it was needed for worthwhile projects. The Key Club Sweethearts this year are Patty Thibos, Linda Bookout, and Debbie Carlile. Patty is a senior, a member of the National Honor Society, and a member of the Tramp Team. Linda is a junior, a member of the Little Woman’s Club, and is also a member of the Tramp Team. Debbie is a Sophomore, a member of the Little Woman’s Club, and is a varsity cheerleader. Keeping with tradition, the club has carried out many fun and worthwhile projects this year. In the spring, the annual FHA Mother- Daughter Banquet and the Daddy Date Night were both carried out with much success. During the week of homecoming, planning, time and hard work went into the construction of their float, “Celebrating a Victory”, which won second place in the club entries. This year the FHA’s sponsor was Miss Lovett, who definitely helped the FHA to filfill their motto, “Toward New Horizons”. 90 From top, left to right: Peggy Bruner, Nancy Koch, Rhonda Davidson, Patricia Carnley, Sue Pitts, Phyllis Thrash, Judy Williams, Sandra Toole, Cindy Horne, Nina Hayes, Phyllis Williams, Darough Reed, Cindy Trawick, Carleen Owens, Marsha Smith, Harriet Speed, Christine Stevenson, Sharon Cook, and Ketta Kowitz. C” Club promotes interest in sports The “C” Club, which consists of students let- tering in varsity football and basketball, cheerleading, and management, is a very impor- tant club at Chipley High School. It is the respon- sibility of the club to promote school spirit and to encourage interest in athletics at CHS. The “C” Club undertakes several projects each year. Among these is the presentation of gifts to the graduating senior members at the annual athletic banquet. The “C” Club is also in charge of selling concessions at each home basketball game. This year, the “C” Club sponsored several student activities in order to raise spirit before the football games. One of the most enjoyable of these was a bonfire, at which a dummy of an opposing team was burned. Under the leadership of Coaches Sonny Raley and Jerry Dixon, the “C” Club has played a very important part at CHS this year. Through their various activities, they have built up more spirit than CHS has had in a long time. The purpose of the Y-Teens is to give en- couragement in spiritual matters to the students. It is their goal to learn as much as possible about God and his love toward mankind. The Y-Teens consist of students who care about what becomes of their lives and the lives of others. They search for the meaning of life through Jesus Christ. The Y-Teens carry on several projects throughout the year, such as bringing the devotional to the students each morning, representing their club while attending various churches throughout the community, and holding bake sales. Members of the Y-Teens this year are Debbie Tharp, Jane Scott, Rise Kirkland, Ann Scott, Martha Wood, Marsha Adams, Renae Wachob, and Rhonda Kolmetz. Under the leadership of their sponsor, Mrs. Louise Lane, the Y-Teens learn to be better citizens in their city, their state, their country, and above all, in their churches. The Y-Teens have recognized the responsibility of life and have accepted it with confidence. 97 CHS Chorus gets new director The Freshman Chorus has as its goal a program of experimental singing which will lead to a time in the lives of the students when they can appreciate and take part in the better types of choral music. The first half of the year, they were under the direction of Mr. Basford, where they practiced vocal techniques. The second half of the year, they had the privilege of taking a music appreciation course under Mr. Pyle. Here they learned more about music theory and other kinds of music. The Senior Chorus concentrates more on the performance aspects of music in an enjoyable fashion. They also have in-depth study in music theory and vocal techniques, where they gain experience in singing which will not only be en- joyable and enriching to the students, but to the listener as well. Mr. Lester Basford, the choral director, is new to Chipley High School, but not to choral groups. He taught in Cottondale High School for the two previous years and has been very active in church as choral director for the past eleven years. V I. The officers of the club are Brenda Creamer— president, Ketta Kowitz—vice president, Renae Wilson—secretary, Robbie Lingo—treasurer, and Constance Harris—reporter. Appliance is stressed and each of'the eighteen members is allowed to advance at his own rate. Trampoline tumbling takes its place in the physical education program along with other gym- nastics activities, and is employed simultaneously with them. Members of a class normally rotate from one activity to another, so that all students are continually engaged. With the leadership of Mrs. Hayes, the class works together in deciding what they will learn and how they will go about the learning process. The purpose of the club is to entertain the student body and other groups at ball games and special events. Kneeling left to right: Jane Scott, Kathy Pitts, Barbara Bookout, Judy Williams, C indy Horne, and Carol Pitts. Second low. Eddie Maleszewskif Linda Bookout, Kim Harris. He attended Long Beach College in Long Beach, California, Brevard Junior College in Cocoa, Florida, and got his Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Florida with a minor in broadcasting. He teaches band at this school and also at the Junior High. His hobby is playing bridge. This year, as always, the CHS Tiger Band presents the half-time show at all of the Tigers’ home football games. The student body is grateful to the band for these fine half-time performances. During the game the band section always gives their support to the fighting Tigers. This year the band has had many fund-rais- ing projects. At the beginning of the school year the band started selling band calendars. But at Halloween time this year the band dropped its usual candy-selling drive, and instead, adopted a fruit cake sale as one of their main fund-raising campaigns. Over the past years this school has always given its enthusiastic support to its fine band. The Journalism Department of Chipley High School urges the continual support of our fine Tiger Band. The Tigers were a young team this year, but each member showed remarkable ability and determination in striving toward a successful team. The Tigers had numerous injuries throughout the season, losing the services of their Senior quarterback, A1 Hudson, in the first game of the season with Quincy. A badly broken leg kept A1 from playing for the rest of the year, which was a serious handicap to the Tiger team. The first two games resulted in losses to Quincy, 26-6, and to Bonifay, 20-6. Chipley’s first victory was over Blountstown, when Chipley came out on top with a score of 14-0. Wakulla edged Chipley in a close game, 13-6, and in the next game, a strong Port St. Joe team beat Chipley 32- 0. The game with Baker was a 6-6 tie, and Chipley overpowered Ft. Walton Beach by a score of 42-0. Chipley lost to Monticello 38-6, but came back to defeat Madison, 42-0. In the last game of the season, after a hard-fought battle, Graceville came out ahead of Chipley by a narrow margin of 13-8. The end of the season left the boys with the knowl- edge that they had done their best.
