Your future course cannot be safely charted until our world has regained and adopted the ideal, Peace on earth, good will toward man. This ideal may be attained through your efforts, or it may have to await the assistance 6f your sons and daughters. As we speak of peace, we are conscious of other sounds from afar—sounds not peaceful. We are told of the horrible aspects of scientific warfare. The leaders of nations are meeting to try to preserve peace, while at the same time1 the scientists of each are working around the clock to surpass others in perfecting weapons of war. These are the sounds of nations at war. Prepare yourselves as thoroughly as you can to live efficiently in this highly scientific and technical age. Yet, when- ever you have an opportunity to express your wish, or make a choice, choose to follow the teachings of the Gentle Man of Galilee. We, the administration and faculty of the Washington County High School, are grateful for the privilege of asso- ciating with you. You have made this school symbolic of friendliness, cooperation, high scholastic standing, efficient student government, and many other worthwhile attainments. To the present and past students of the Washington County High School, I send greetings and best wishes. To the senior class of 1959, I offer my congratulations for another fine yearbook Paw Prints. Someday you will share its memories with your own children. We sincerely hope that they, too, will have the opportunity that you have been privileged to enjoy. May success, happiness, peace, and contentment be yours throughout all your days. Sincerely yours. Colly V. Williams Principal, Washington County High School IN APPRECIATION TO MR. CHARLES ADAMS . . . who sold concessions at the football games, picked off peanuts, steered us through the turmoil of our senior year, and was still able to laugh when it was all over—we show our fond appreciation in this our. . . 1959 PAW PRINTS 5 MAIN ENTRANCE Through these doors, CHS students enter into the halls of learning. Both happiness and sorrow are shared in the halls and class rooms. Many of the seniors of '59 and others will often gaze at these doors with a long- ing to re-enter as students. C.H.5. GYMNASIUM In the new gym our basketball team practiced and played good, clean bas- ketball. Also several of the P.E. classes used this building to advance their physical health. Our new gym is a real asset to our school. JUNIOR HIGH BUILDING This building brings back old memories to Senior high students. To the present Junior high students it means study and play with fellow classmates. The sixth and seventh grades are instructed in this building to promote their general educa- tion in order to be better high school stu- dents. 6 MUSIC BUILDING Here the work of our Music De- partment is carried on. This includes Junior and Senior Chorus rehearsals and band music. This training in many instruments has resulted in our school's winning the rating of Su- perior for eight years in a row. NEW LUNCHROOM In this lovely modern building stu- dents of CHS are served well prepared and nourishing meals for a small fee each day. PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND AGRICULTURE BUILDING In the first of these buildings stu- dents are taught rules of games which they later play. In the Agriculture building boys learn farm management, proper use of farm tools, and shop work. 7 DEDICATION A teacher who has been inspiring, patient and understanding. FIGHTING In the slam bang game of football the crowd is thrilled by the spectacular plays, the spirit of the indi- vidual and the team, the blare of the bands, even the taste of the hot dogs, and the smell of the crisp fall days; but nowhere is there a more thrilling moment than that experienced by the player who receives an award for outstanding performance, all-state, or the coveted C for hard work and perseverance. STUDENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES Kathlee Toole Linda Clenny Joann Bell The duty of the Junior Class officers is to represent the members of the Junior Class to the best of their ability. Also to make a list of the projects during the summer, and see that the projects are carried out. Though, by far, not all the work is done by the class officers, much of the responsibility falls on their shoulders. The duties of the homeroom representatives are many. They must keep the homeroom members aware of the Student Council and its workings. They participate in all the projects of the council. They must act as chairmen of their homeroom in meetings if an officer is not present. Last is the duty of welcoming all new students, showing them around the campus, and also introducing them in assembly. CAR WASH Since entering high school, the present Junior Class has sponsored a car wash each year. This activity is operated in shifts and is usually very successful. CONCESSION STAND At all home basketball games the Junior Class sells candy, chewing gum, and popcorn. For this purpose they are allotted space at the concession stand in the gym. ACTIVITIES JUNIOR JUNIOR MOVIE Annually the Juniors of C.H.S. present a movie. They have two showings of the movie and charge admission. Mr. Adams, Mrs. Rice, Mrs. Reddick, and Mr. Pelham decided to get Yzarc to tell them what the Senior Class of 1959 would be doing in ten years. This is his report: ANNETTE GAINER and ALTA SEWELL have an exclusive beauty parlor on Pluto. It is opened to rich, handsome, and single male Plutonians. CHARLES DUNN, a construction engineer for the Road Department of Saturn, has just finished a bridge between Saturn and Jupiter. The bridge is a mere 402 million miles long. LAMAR GAY is the Elvis Presley of Jupiter. His song writer, who wrote such hits as You Ain't Nothing But a Space Hound and Why Do You Always Runt Out of Gas and Leave Me Up In Space?, is none other than BILLY RAY SLAY. NORMA McDANIEL and FAYE OWENS, two former Miss C.H.S., are two of the five finalists in the Miss Outer Space contest. GARY WHEELER, TOMMY JACKSON, and EULISS LOCKE are the judges for this contest. ANN NUNLEY is Saturn's greatest space suit designer. Her latest style is the One- Look suit. One look and you can't bear to look again. KENNETH RUSTIN, FRED TAYLOR, and PHILLIP GRIFFIN, members of the W.W.G. A.A.D.A.F.M.C. (We Will Go Anywhere and Do Anything for Money Corps) are leaving soon to explore an unknown planet. JEAN FOWLER, FLO ALFORD, and JEAN DICKENSON have just opened a new hospital on Mars. Jean Fowler sings the patient to sleep, Flo operates, and Jean Dickenson takes the money. JIMMY DUNCAN is the most popular television star on Mars. His program is called Have Space Ship, Will Fly. FLOSSIE OWEN, the famous pianist, is making a tour of the solar system. Traveling with her are LOUISE NAPIER, GERALDINE ARNOLD, and BETTY JOYCE THARP. These girls sing the latest and are known as the Satellites. TOMMY McPHILLIPS is now a magazine salesman for the Jupiter Publishing Com- pany. His chief competitor is DOW GILMORE. REBA DUNCAN, MYRTLE RABON, and NANCY TOOLE are teaching a course in Earth History to the students on Mars. JERRY ODOM is known to the people of Mars as the Great White Hunter. He hunts house cats. CHRISTINE TAYLOR now has a school for majorettes. Helping her are YVONNE RICHTER and ANNETTE SASSER. LYNTON MALLOY is the Sherlock Holmes of Saturn. Since graduation, Lynton has solved some 2,000 cases. Quite a record! MAVIS NICHOLS is the first woman president of Pluto. Her vice-president is JEN- NELLE NELSON. CHARLES PETERSON and CHIP WOOD are building a space ship so that they can come back to earth. It seems that Coach Kimbrough sent word that he needed two excellent players, and Charles and Chip wanted to help him. WAYNE DAVIS and FRANK PARKER have just formed the Pipeline of Space. GERLENE WOOD is now Chief of Police on Mars. Her head deputy is MARTHA BERRY. THOMAS PORTER is a news reporter with N.B.C. (Neptune Broadcasting Com- pany). LINDA HAYES, MARILYN USERY, MARY TEMPLES, and ELAINE ENFINGER are secretaries for ROY SASSER who is the richest man on the moon. Roy made his money by selling green cheese. NELL BARRY is doing right well for herself, too. She has just bought a space ship which is so large it takes six days to go from one end to the other. FREEMAN MORRIS and FRANKLIN PATE are operating a Fly-In Restaurant. They specialize in Spaceburgers and Electron Shakes. RICHARD McADAMS now owns a chain of used space ship lots. Managing his various lots are BOBBY TOOLE, HOLLY BRITT, DANIEL HATCHER, and GARRIE SMITH. MAREEN DEAN, BETTY PHILLIPS, and SHIRLEY MONK are doing television com- mercials. They advertize Soggie Woggies, the cereal that is just a little bit soggier than any other cereal. REGGIE PELHAM and WESLEY SHOEMAKER are weather forecasters for a television station on Uranus. They have just set a new record for predicting weather. They were wrong 99 Vi times out of 100. BETTY RUTH CUSHING is the new Miss Mercury. She was selected because of her BIG brown eyes. CALVIN BRUNER, REX SOWELL, and CARTHELL EVERETT are bachelor playboys. They roam from planet to planet leaving a string of broken hearts behind them. HELEN COLEY, MERLENE GRIFFIN, EVELYN CLARK, and PATRICIA TEW are col- laborators on a new series of children's books. The titles of the first two to come out were Three Little Martians and Snow White and the Seven Space Men. WAYNE LASITER, PAUL HUTCHINS, BILLY HUDSON, LARRY GRISSETT, JIMMY BUSH, and JAMES BAXLEY are doing undercover work for the government of Mars. Their work is so secret even they don't know what they are doing. With such a future predicted, the destined-to-be-famous class of 1959 waits im- patiently until all these things come to be. CLASS OF ’59 HISTORY As the pages of life are turned, the ones remembered most are our high school days. For eight long years we looked forward to 1955 when we could be in senior high school. As these four short years passed, we were con- stantly striving to prepare ourselves for the future. Now as our high school days have passed, let's look back and recall our activities and thrills. Our Freshman school term was directed by MRS. GEORGIA McGRAW, MISS JOAN COLEY, MRS. JOSE- PHINE McGLAMERY, and MR. FRED BRAMBLETT, our sponsor. The class chose FLOSSIE OWEN, CHARLES DUNN, ELMO HUDSON, and CHRISTINE TAYLOR to represent us in the student government. JEAN FOWLER was chosen as one of Miss C.H.S.'s Attendants. Time seemed very short before June. This month reminds us that there is no more studying for three months. In September of 1956 the group returned to CHS as Sophomores. Still in need of guidance, we looked to MRS. JOAN CHANCE, MRS. LILA CASTLE, MR. J. B. WARD, and MR. TRAVIS CASTLE. The Sophomore Stu- dent Council Representatives this year were MAVIS NICHOLS, ELVIE JEAN PARK, FLO ALFORD, and CHARLES PETERSON. One of the 1956 Homecoming Attendants was JEAN FOWLER. The class became excited when FAYE OWENS was crowned Miss C.H.S. of 1957. This completed our Sophomore activities. We were guided through our Junior year by MRS. BARBARA WATTS, MRS. JOAN CHANCE, MR. RALPH RAY, and MR. ROBERT A. LEE. As our Class officers we elected CARTHELL EVERETT, President; FLOSSIE OWEN, Vice-President; FLO ALFORD, Secretary; LOUISE NAPIER, Treasurer; AAAVIS NICHOLS, Reporter; and CHRISTINE TAYLOR, Parliamentarian. To represent the class in the Student Council we chose DOW GILMORE, JIMMY DUN- CAN, REGGIE PELHAM, and BILLY RAY SLAY. Officers of the student government from our class were CHARLES DUNN, Vice-President; NORMA McDANIEL, Secretary; and THOMAS PORTER, Representative-at-Large. MARY TEMPLES and NORMA McDANIEL were attendants in the Homecoming Queen's Court. GERELENE WOOD was ac- tive as one of the Senior Cheerleaders. New Beta Club members selected were JIMMY DUNCAN, LOUISE NA- PIER, CHARLES DUNN, MYRTLE RABON, ELVIE JEAN PARK, DOW GILMORE, MAVIS NICHOLS, FLO ALFORD, FLOSSIE OWEN, REBA DUNCAN, and JEAN DICKENSON. In February we were really excited when NORMA Mc- DANIEL was crowned Miss C.H.S. for 1958. The class chose Don't Take My Penny as its play and My Pal Gus as its movie. The Class also sponsored Derby Week. The highlight of our Junior year was the Junior-Senior Banquet, the theme of which was Fairy- land. As we returned the September of 1958, we began the final step of our journey. We were deeply indebted to our sponsors, MRS. CARRIE REDDICK, MRS. GERALDINE RICE, MR. CHARLES ADAMS, and MR. HOWARD PEL- HAM. As class officers for the last year we selected JEAN FOWLER, President; BILLY RAY SLAY, Vice-President; NORMA McDANIEL, Secretary; CHARLES DUNN, Treas- urer; WAYNE LASSITER, Parliamentarian; and ANNETTE GAINER, Reporter. The senior Student Council officers were THOAAAS PORTER, President; FLOSSIE OWEN, Treas- urer; and CARTHELL EVERETT, as one of the Representa- tives-at-Large. The Senior Class was represented in the student government by WESLEY SHOEMAKER, LINDA HAYES, GERLENE WOOD, and REBA DUNCAN. GERLENE WOOD was one of the Miss Homecoming 1958 at- tendants. MAVIS NICHOLS was elected as our 1959 Paw Prints Editor. The Tiger Scratch Editor-in-Chief was CAR- THELL EVERETT. A member of our class, LINDA HAYES, represented Chipley in the Peanut Festival. Several mem- bers of the class were selected by various clubs and organizations to represent them in the Seventh Annual Beauty Review. In the Miss C.H.S. 1959 court LINDA HAYES was an attendant. The 1959 Miss Homemaker of Tomorrow title was awarded to JEAN DICKENSON. The Senior Class used Magnificent Obsession as its movie and presented The Curious Savage as the class play. This completed our class history and accomplish- ments. The 1959 Senior Class lived up to their motto Forward Ever—Backward Never. 102 SENIOR SPONSORS Mr. Charles Adams, Mrs. Geraldine Rice, Mrs. Carrie Reddick, Mr. Howard Pelham. These are our sponsors, teachers, and friends. They have instructed us, encouraged us, and led us by example.
