PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE MR. COLLY V. WILLIAMS University of Florida Principal of Chipley High School for eight A.B.E.; M.A.E. years Dear Students: For the first time in the history of the Washington County High School the Seniors have given the Principal the privilege of sending greetings and best wishes through their PAW PRINTS to all our past and present students. This honor is indeed appreciated. Surely this yearbook, which has been so carefully prepared, will in years to come bring back priceless memories. The Washington County High School is symbolic of friendliness, cooperation, high scholastic standards, efficient student government, and many other worthwhile attain- ments. It has been built around the standards set by you and the classes who have grad- uated before you. We, who have worked with you, are grateful for these associations. This has been a most pleasant year, and it has never been my privilege to work with a more loyal or cooperative group. It is my hope and wish that each of you will continue to find pleasure and enjoyment in the performance of a task well done. Sincerely yours, FOREWORD Editor .................... ALICE PIERCE and MISS MARILYN DE BOER CLASS PROPHECY Looking far into the future, we now get a glimpse of the Class of '56; each one engaged in his life’s work: Going first to the Nation's Capital in Washington, we find Vice President WILSON ROBERTS presiding over the Senate. After adjournment, we step over and talk with WILSON, who tells us he has strong hopes of becoming President some day. Taking a further look around the Senate building, we see other faces with which we arc familiar. First we see the Junior Senator from Florida, THEODORE WILSON, accompanied by the Senior Senator from Florida, NAN GODFREY, the state's first lady senator, who learned the art of talking in Mrs. Gilmore's classes back at C.H.S. Over on the edge of the floor we see the Co-Editors of the Washington Post. SHIRLEY LEWIS, DOROTHY PORTER, and BETTY ANN FOXWORTH. These three girls have come over to check-up on their Senate Correspondents, as TOMMY JOE PAR- KER, publisher, has other business to attend to and cannot be present. Moving on, we see several senatorial stenographers. Among them are JERLLYENE RONEY, CAROLYN CLITE, MARY KIRKLAND, OLIS LASITER, and BETTY SUE HATCHER. Out on the street, we take a Bush Taxi, one of the many now owned and operated by Bush and Company. The owners of this concern are none other than ALTON, RONALD, CARL I ON, and JOHN NEAL BUSH. Who would have ever thought it?!! We also pass Mr. and Mrs. Sherwin Anderson and their twins Sherry and Sherrill. Mrs. Anderson will be remembered as the former EVELYN REYNOLDS. Going next to our hotel, who should we run into but J. T. SASSER. ALLEN GRIFFEN, J. C. HUTCHINS, JOHN HANCOCK, and SHELLIE FOXWORTH. They have taken the place of the Crew-Cuts ; I believe they refer to themselves as the Duck-Tails. They tell us of many of our former classmates here in Washington, one of whom is here on vacation with her third husband, Henry Ford Vanderbilt. Mrs. Vanderbilt is the former SANDRA SEAY. Chatting over old times is fun, but our time is running out. With a cheerful good-bye to the Duck-Tails, we summon the bell-hop and start to our rooms. To our surprise, we discover ROSS WOODS is none other than our bell- hop. Don’t get the wrong impression though, ROSS is up for a promotion soon!!! After a big dinner at the hotel we decide to take in the theaters and concert halls, especially when we find that BETTY SUE REYNOLDS is giving a concert and PASCAL ROBERT'S and W. T. MILLER are on the same program. These three have really gone places!!! In the crowd in front of the theatre following the performance, we run into LYNDA CAWTHON. OLA CORBIN, and EDWINA YATES. At present these girls are Powers Models; just waiting for that break in Hollywood. We see GAIL VANLANDINGHAM, EDNA DANIELS, MARY HELEN BARROW, GRACE HADDAN, GWEN PAC.HER, and VIRGINIA SMITH, nurses on vacation from Johns Hopkins. We hardly get a glimpse of JAN WEAVER, MARIE CANUM or ELEANOR GRACE KENT, employed by the census bureau, since they had heavy dates and left the theatre quickly. Hearing a familiar noise coming out of a restaurant across the street, we glance over that way and are astonished to see BUNNY WEAN ER, RAYMOND PIPPIN, IOMMN MALESZEWSKI, JERRY BAXTER. LARRY ENITNGER. and DONALD EVERETT coming toward us. We discover that these, our hometown boys, are the United States entrants in the National Olympics. £nd all six from Chipley—can you imagine?!! SAPP and STILLER are assisted in their duties in that far-off land by their secretarial staff, consisting of MERTIS PARISH, ETHLYN EVERETT, and JUANITA ENITNGER. CLASS HISTORY One morning in the year 1944, we were awakened unusually early, dressed in our best clothes and herded to an old unfamiliar building. Here a woman by the name of Miss Frankie talked to us, trying to calm our nerves so that we would become unaware of the absence of our mothers. This we soon learned was the beginning of 12 long years of SCHOOL. (At least that's what that woman called it.) Being divided into Mrs. Smith's, Miss Herndon's and Mrs. Davis' room, we learned all about how the fairies brought to us each morning a new letter of the alphabet. Absorbing all of this knowledge, we went upstairs to be with the friends of the preceding year. Remember the time Mary had to stand outside Mrs. Farrier's door for hitting Toogie with a ruler? Miss Farrier and Mrs. Pippin had similar experiences in their classes. We were getting to be old hands around the school yard by this time. Boy, how we could boss all those small fry in the first and second grades. Here's where we tackled the multiplication tables. We thought Mrs. Turner, Mrs. Huggins, and Mrs. Everett would never be satisfied. We also rated a trip down to the local theater to see Song of the South.” The fourth grade ran along very smoothly with Mrs. Bass, Mrs. Davis, and Mrs. Laney in the lead. We ll never forget how we used to swallow our lunches whole so we could play chase. Many a mile has been run around that building, hasn't it? Funny how Carolyn Sue and Sandra (4 x 4) were always it. The cloak rooms were put through the mill because of our loose tongues. We seemed to have learned enough to make the fifth grade but continued to fill the cavities known as our heads under Mrs. Everett, Mrs. Warren, and Mrs. Braxton. Nan and Donald were crowned King and Queen of the Halloween Carnival. We really rated when a high school student was sent over to teach us Physical Education. We were all scared to death in the sixth year when we were transferred to the new wing across the street from our home. However, all weren’t quite so lucky. One section was sent to the little tin building. Our days of idle time ended when many joined various clubs, the Band, and the Junior Glee Club. In the seventh grade, we learned the wonderful discovery of changing classes. Shirley and Tommy were crowned King and Queen of the Halloween Carnival this year. The boys went out for Junior Football and Basketball, and some of the girls made the Junior Cheerleading squad. Now, being almost grown up, we enjoyed dances (no one could dance). Of course, the girls got prettied up by Mrs. Gordy while the boys had bull sessions with Mr. Wolpert. As Freshmen we were it. More of the class participated in clubs, football, basketball, cheerleading and other extracurricular activities. Lynda was crowned Miss C.H.S. Weren’t we tickled! We dreamed along through the 10th with the love bug” out of its cage. Some of the girls became interested in F.H.A. work and took high offices. The ushers and cigarette girls were selected for the Junior-Senior Banquet. Juniors! This was one big year. The play, A Ready Made Family,” and Junior movie were quite successful, and after a lot of work, the Seniors received a lovely banquet at the Houston Hotel. Miss C.H.S. was again chosen from our group. At last, Seniors! Everyone has worked hard this year with the presidencies of many of the clubs and organizations filled by us. Homecoming was a never-to-be-forgotten event with Carolyn as our queen. The play, Bringing Up Mother,” and the movie also added to our successful year. Lynda reigned again as Miss C.H.S.” And now as we are ending that day which started many years ago, we leave our motto and feel certain that it has been accomplished— All good or nothing.” 1 N.
