Freshman Melissa Baird took her cutting of Edgar Allen Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart to State competition after a fourth place finish in the Northern divisional meet. Baird had begun the season with another freshman, Carla Bilger, in the serious duo event. Bilger went on to the humorous duo event, where she performed a piece based on the fairytale invention of the genie in Aladdin's Lamp with Mary Duke. Another humorous duo was composed of freshmen Marla Anderson and Tammy Moxley. Their cutting earned a fourth, fifth and seventh place during their competition. Two underclassmen who competed in pantomime were freshman Vanessa McCartney and sophomore Heather MacLean. MacLean earned a first place at the Chinook Invitational. McCartney, who joined late in the season, gained valuable experience by competing in four meets. Freshman Shawn Geiser wrote her own cutting based on the movie Choices of the Heart. This serious solo earned a fifth place at Divisionals and thus, a seed at State competition. In addition to Baird and Geiser, Chinook took three juniors to State: Jason Pyette, Bonnie Ortner and Leah Noel. Pyette began the season with a humorous solo original based on the James Thurber character, Walter Mitty. He collected several first place trophies. However, this material was disqualified and he was forced to find a new cutting, with which he earned a fourth place at Divisionals and missed semi-finals at State by one point. Ortner was successful in the humorous solo event. Her piece, Chickens”, from The Ranch Woman's Manual, by Gwen Peterson, took six meets in the top three placings and ended with a fifth place in State competition. Noel began the year with a humorous solo, changed to a serious duo and then decided on pantomime. She did well and received a national drama award which enabled her to compete for regional college scholarship grants. Junior Brenda Bosch was the only speech competitor, and earned three third places in Oral Interpretation of Literature, as well as other finalist certificates of recognition. Top: Coaches Ruby Skoyen and Donna Miller contemplate about a cutting Bottom: Surprisel Leah Noel performs her pantomime. 56 This young, small team was commended for their season wins of three first-place trophies. They gained much needed experience and were expected to be very competitive in years to come. Heather mimes her way into the hearts of many.
