Ecology was strongly considered as the Sophomores used old newspapers and the Juniors cleaned up the town and the prize money by using old beer cans. The bonfire Thursday night was a roaring success, and the soc hop with 86 PROOF afterwards provided fun for all. Friday, the official homecoming day was enjoyed by young and old alike. The afternoon event featured the crowning of Queen Peggy Butler and King Keith Conroy and the presentation of their attendants, Jim Gruss, Winston Churchill, Lorrie Ehlang, Leanne Taylor, Ron Reid and Candy Herda. The assembly also included skits and musical numbers. The parade with float entries from all classes and several groups followed. The girls’ basketball team smashed Dodson, but the football team had a bit of trouble with the Choteau Bulldogs, coming out on the short end of a 12-8 score. Dancing to the music of Nonhem Freight closed out the week’s activities. 35 Varsity Football. . . The players stuck with the rest of the season with an enthusiastic attitude for each game. It finally paid off with a 36 -14 victory over Browning in the last contest. The squad this year was comparatively small against the other conference teams. But with a tough defense and an offense that never gave up, the season ended with Matt Harshman and Dan Davies elected team captains. Davies was offensive end and Harshman defensive end on the second string A11-Conference team. All in all, it was a very trying season. 37 J. V. Football. . . The feature of the evening was many people held captive in the junior jail and at many other exciting games. The C-club sponsored a free-throw toss in the gymnasium; the seniors introduced Ball-0 for the first time; the newly formed Drill Team even helped the fun of the night with their dice game. The variety show was better than ever as the Hi-Liners gave an excellent performance. Debbie Nicholson gave an oral interpretation and Chirs Brummer and Anita Johnson presented their humorous duo. As an added attraction, Ernie Gates sang a few selections, accompanying himself cm guitar. The excitement of the night was climaxed as senior candidate Dawn Jamieson was crowned queen for 1973. Princesses were: Freshman Kathi Barber, Sophomore Cindy Ehlang, and Junior Margie Inman. The intense inter-class rivalry that accompanied the queen competition served to make this carnival one of the most successful in the history of CHS. 43 The cast and crew for the junior play were: ROW ONE: Fred Behrens, Ross Friede, Hugh Ross, Dean Ramberg, Dan Davies, John Ross. George Spencer, played by Darrell Anderson, who was an inexperienced pilot, steered the plane from a most frightening night into a safe landing. The play was held January 13 and 14. Junior Play. . . Winston Churchill played a dumb athlete who wanted a tutor. Jim decided he would tutor Winston if his friends would help him become a social success. To do this he would hypnotize him. Problems arose and he ended up hypnotizing a VIP into believing he was a rabbit. 52 The Junior Class Prom was a very exciting night for those who attended. It took place on Saturday March 30, with the Grand March at 9:00. The New Found Joy from M.S.U. was the band selected to perform. They collected paper to take to Great Falls for recycling. F.H.A. girls demonstrated that they cared more than once this year. They took fruit baskets to the Sweet Memorial Rest Home and visited wtih the folks there and conducted the Easter Seal Fund Drive. Six members of the club went to the State Convention where the theme was Decide to Care. Their efforts in 73 -'74 were highly commendable for the support given to the competitive teams. The teams receiving these efforts were: girls' basketball, varsity and J.V. football, wrestling, boys' basketball, and speech and drama. The Beet Squad sponsored many activities during the year. They were kept busy decorating the halls, the lockers, the gym, and the football field. Much excitement rose at pep assemblies when the Beet Squad sponsored the yelling contest.
