M 'i 7 X v f CHINOOK HIGH SCHOOL THE 1971 CHINOOK BREEZE JAY FLOYD WILLIAMS The Class of 1971, in remembrance of Jay Floyd Williams, whose cheery smile and 'hello' made him welcome wher- ever he went, dedicate this annual to him. Jay's person- ality will never be forgotten and his memory will linger in our hearts forever. 2 ?team3 UNDERO AIS1971 XAMS CTI VITII FOOTBALL SEASON BEGAN... The 1970-71 football season was one of the sports highlights of the year. Coach Kimball's team completed a fine 6-2 record that gave them the third place standing in the 4-B Northern Confer- ence, This fine record was compiled by a team lead by some outstanding seniors. Dan MacLean-Most Valuable Player, and East-West Shrine Game, Loren Ellery-Most Valuable Defensive Player, Tom lnman-A 11-Conference Tackle, and Jack Butler-Honorable Mention for All-Conference Linebacker. The team also had some fine mem- bers, Jeff Harshman and Dan Jamieson, that will return to the next years squad. The major disappointment of the season was the injuries that put some team members out for one game or more. 4 . . HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES AND Homecoming activities began on Mon- day, with each class beginning its float, and came to a climax on Friday after- noon with Dan MacLean and Karen Schellin being crowned Homecoming King and Queen. The Parade followed and that night at the halftime of a Beeter 25-0 victory over Ft. Benton, the winners of the float contest were announced: Third place went to the Freshman, second to the Junior High, who were allowed to enter for the first time, and the Juniors won first place with their float Beat the Beefers. 6 . . WITH TWO VICTORIES AND A LOSS . . .ENDED. 9 Princesses From top; Vickie Anderson, senior; Kathy Harshman, junior; and Candy Herda, freshman. FUN NITE Queen Sandy Lenhardt The 1970 Fun Night began as usual with a fun-filled carni- val in the high school shop. Old and young alike enjoyed the thrill of winning at various games and the evening came to its high point as all present went to the auditorium for the crowning. Ticket winners were announced and the climax came when the 1970 Harvest Ball Queen, Sandi Lenhardt, was announced and crowned. 10 u GIRL'S BASKETBALL TEAM The girls' basketball team did all right for just starting a team this year. The girls played a total of six games. The team lost to Havre twice, Big Sandy once, Chester once, and Box Elder once. The only game the girls won was against Ches- ter at the Big Sandy tournament. 12 B-SQUAD BASKETBALL 13 VARSITY The 1970-71 Basketball Season was not a winning one as Chinook tradition dictates. Although the Beeters could master only a 6-17 record, the season was not as bad as the record indicates. The record could easily have been a winning one, but the team dropped several games by only one or two points. Highlights of the season included: third place in the Christmas Invitational where the Beeters fought the strong Saco team before dropping that game on the opening night. The Beeters then came back to de- feat the Harlem Squad for the third spot. After a series of ups and downs, the regular season came to a halt and the Beeters entered the District Tourna- ment seeded seventh. 14 BASKETBALL The Chinook team was ten points down at half-time of their opener, but managed to come back and take a strong Fort Benton team into overtime before losing a one point decision. On the second day, the team met the third seeded Cascade team and defeated them, thus eliminating the Badgers. In the third game for the Beeters, the Big Sandy Pioneers were the foes. The Big Sandy team fought hard and in the end dumped the Beeters 58-51 to end the basketball season for the Beeters. 5 16 The Pep Club, during the school year of 1970-1971 kept itself very busy. Sponsored by Miss Swant and led by President-Vicki Anderson, Vice-President-Karen Midboe, Secretary-Let a Campbell, and Treasurer-Judy Schuhmacher, the club set up pep assemblies, tour- naments, and a special concession stand to sell coffee and dough- nuts. (Outstanding members of the club were Roxanne Brewer, Carol Leeds, Laurie Ehlang, Linda Sparks, and RaeAnn Renne. The girls were recognized with a pin on Awards Day, along with the officers. 17 WRESTLING Ken Stuker, one of the six participating at the State Tournament in Bozeman, placed second in the 167 division. The other participants were John Overcast, Frank Overcast, Mark Peterschick, Bob Herdegen, and Richard Stuker. Chinook sponsored their first wrestling tournament this year. The teams invited were Big Sandy, Malta, Turner, Chester, Fort Benton, and Fort Benton J. V. and the two Chinook teams. The Chinook Varsity took the first place trophy. Other tourneys Chinook was involved in were Chester, Malta, and Big Sandy, all of which they took second. The last tourney was the Lewistown of which they didn't place. The Beeters as a team ended with a 6-3 record, two of the losses to Cut Bank and the other two to Havre. This record excludes all tournaments The Chinook team took second in Divisional and fifth in State. 18 20 STUDENT COUNCIL DID IT 2] OF BEING ERNEST ,1 The Importance of Being Ernest , a play by Oscar Wilde, is a high comedy based on the stress placed on the name, Ernest . Roy Gruss, Tim Buhman, Bob Feist, Linda Ross, Leta Campbell, Lora Young, Peggy Williamson, and Jane McClintock worked to make the real Ernest please stand up. In time, the girls who had placed so much importance on the name Ernest realized that it was not the name at all but the per- son that mattered. THE IMPORTANCE THE WHOLE TRUTH Cast members were: David Stroud, Roy Gruss, Terri Phares, Jane McClintock, Garth Johnson, Pat Leeds, and Susan Renne. The actors did an excellent job, al- though Garth did arrest the wrong man for murder. After a thorough exam- ination though, he came up with clues that led him to arrest Roy, the real murderer. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS The four main officers of the Chinook F.H.A. Chapter for the year 1970 - 71 were: President - Karen Midboe, Vice-President - Marcy Pridgeon, Secretary - Roxanne Brewer, and Treasurer - Linda Ross. The chapter mothers were Mrs. Warren Ross, Mrs. Ray Sattleen, and Mrs. Herman Kathman. The first event the chapter took part in was Homecoming. Beef Anyone? was the theme of their float. On October 31, a number of girls attended District Convention in Harlem. Linda Ross was elected President of District 3. A hayride and dance involving both the F.H.A. and F.F.A. was held on November 19, 1970. The chapter played its regular role in the annual Fun Night on November 13, 1970. The next event con- sisted of the Sweetheart's Ball on February 13, 1971. Karen Midboe was selected as queen and Kent Lybeck as king. Four delegates and a state officer attended the state F.H.A. Con- vention on March 18 - 20, 1971 in Great Falls. Linda Ross, state officer candidate, was installed as State Historian. The annual Mother-Daughter Banquet was the last major event for the Chapter. On April 28, the four main officers were in- stalled. They are: President - Marcy Pridgeon, Vice-President - Pauly McMaster, Secretary - Judy Schuhmacher, and Treas- urer - Barb Overcast. 24 HOME EC. CLASS IN ACTION 25 BOYS' TRACK This year Boy's Track, under the able coaching of Mr. Whisonant, enjoyed one of its most successful seasons in recent years. The highlight of the season was the second place finish in the district meet by the Beeter trackmen. All year long, the Beeters were led by several standouts, six of whom advanced to the divisional meet and two, Cal and Jeff Harshman in the hurdles, advanced to the state meet. The other thinclads who participated in the divisional meet were Mike Taylor, Marlin LaTray, Bob Feist, and Garth Johnson. Rich C. Stuker performed well all year long, but injuries kept him from going to the divisional meet. 26 GIRLS' TRACK The Girls Track Team had a pretty good turn out this year. There were a lot of girls out but this is only their first year. If all of the girls come out next year who came out this year there will be a pretty good team next year. Some of the girls who came out last year and will help quite a bit next year are: Penny Miller, Marcia Rusch and Patsy Kimball. 27 PIZZA PARTY 28 PROM FESTIVITIES King Bill Oehmcke and Queen Patty Brass 29 31 NOW, SING WE ALL THIS DAY. . Highlighting a strenuous year of activity for the C.H.S, choral dept, was the recommendation of Mr. Wm. Creaser that the Chamber Choir audition for the Na- tional Music Convention in Portland, Oregon, next year. Both the Concert and Chamber Choirs received superior ratings at the district music festival along with 22 solos and ensembles. Two members of the choir, Laurie Doughten and Larry Obie were selected to attend All-Northwest Choir in Boise, Idaho, and 13 members were selected for All-State Choir. The C.H. S. Band has done a variety of things this year to promote school spirit. They have played in all the home football and basketball games, pep assemblies, and marched in the Homecoming parade. Three students were selected to play in the All-State Band at the State Music Festival on May 7 and 8. They were Patty McClennahan, Bobbie Butcher and Neal Svendson, The Band has been engaged in all sorts of fund raising projects for their trip to Rapid City in South Dakota on June 3-7.
