The idea was bom in the Senior English class of 1917-1918, conducted by Miss Ethel M. Adams. The class enthusiastically accepted the challenge, and immediately proceeded to enlist the aid of the other three classes. A number of juniors had enjoyed some experience in publishing a little, hektographed pamphlet, known as Sophomore Life , during the preceding school year, and were of a great deal of help. At a subsequent meeting of the student body, Kathryn Flanagan was chosen as Editor, with Leo Gesell as Business Manager. Others on the original staff were: Cleo Dowen, Assistant Business Manager, Marguerite Thibaudeau, Fiction, Violet Flanagan, Society, Margaret Ramsey, Dramatics, Henry Martens, Sports, Lila Christian, Exchanges, and Adelaide Christian, Comics. Faculty supervision was provided by Superintendent Elizabeth M. Dickey, business advisor, and by Miss Adams, literary advisor. Miss Adams called for suggestions from the staff for a name, and the present name, Chinook Breeze , proposed by Leo Gesell, was unanimously accepted. The name was partially borrowed from the Long Beach, California, Polyethnic High School's publication known as LaBrisa (meaning Sea Breeze, in Spanish). This little magazine offered a name which added up very nicely with our frequent southwesters, and the name Chinook . The original plan was to publish each six weeks during the school term, and the first issue appeared just before Christmas in 1917. One more issue came out in early spring, but following that, due largely to disruptions in school schedules, etc., occasioned by World War I, it was decided to come out with a yearbook number at graduation time, and to continue on that basis in the future. Thus, the Chinook Breeze came into being. Very simple, very small, very amateurish, and a far cry from the more recent handsomely-bound and well-written issues, it was nevertheless the start of a fine tradition as regards Chinook High School, and the class of 1918, with the underclassmen on the staff, may well be proud of the results of their untiring and well-coordinated efforts . 26 ORGANIZATIONS STUDENT COUNCIL Seated 1. to r.: Mr. Smith, sponsor; J. The sign 1 just passed, Alexcast Standard Station, must be owned by Mama Overcast and Duane Alexander. Their motto is use our gas and there's nothing you can't pass. Here's the news with Paul Harvey. I wonder what's been happening around the world. Miss Ilene Goodrich has been rated as top rate nurse in Vietnam. Tonight a great pianist, Vance Gutweiler, will make his grand debut at Carnegie Hall. Bill Thomas has won the national presidential election. His speech writer is Steve Jensen, Margie Thompson has been named the first woman professor at Harvard. Mahaila Murlarkey's top western hit has sold 3 million copies. Escort Steve Thompson is kept busy. Susan Helmle is now the top model and her nickname is Suey. In the Sports World, I hear that Mike Molyneaux is the new pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Maybe I should drive up to the old school. Well, I'll be, there's John Burkhartsmeyer princiapl. He runs CHS the way he wants now. Steve Herndon is the head scientist. His success can be measured by what's left of the Chemistry Room. Once Judy Kessel passed bookkeeping she decided to teach it and there she goes off to class. Miniskirts have made a comeback at CHS with Becky Nemetz as the Home Ec teacher. I see Karen Grabofsky is married now and teaching at the Meadowlark And there is Peg Pridgeon managing the hot lunch program. Must be the reason everyone is driving to hot lunch now. CHS Speech and Debate coach Frank Pehrson looks pleased since he won the B Sweepstakes Trophy. Kay Fald and Fred Hamilton are keeping Coach Kennedy happy with all the great wrestlers they are raising. New basketball coaches Ed Obie and Jerry Edgington are State Champs again this year and seem quite pleased. I notice that Donna Annis is the CHS librarian. She must have got the job because of her quiet ways Here comes the school bus and Linda Finley is the driver. She's now in control after having to ride it all those years. The Cozy is still the teen hangout with its new owner Sharon Padgett. Other new business establishments I notice as I go downtown are the improved Pastime and Steakhouse with owner Brent Butcher. Above him, Mike Hofeldt still lives the same as he did in high school. Jim and Pam Jamieson now own Jamieson Motors and leading the Dodge Rebellion here. Brad Maddox finally established a cycle shop and Arthur Bryant has a Honda shop where he is working on making them run in the winter. Barbara Rasmussen now has a Beauty Salon and specializes in wigs. Oh there goes Jean O'Brien in Jerry's camero. Looks like she couldn't stand the thought of leaving. Larry Warburton is doing the same only now he wants a new car. Wow!! What a beautiful hot pink mustang and that's Gayle Swenson driving. They say it has taken her since high school and 2, 389 cereal contests to win that. Thinking of some other classmates, I discovered that Sheri Unmh is in partnership on a banana plantation and instead of Chiquitas, she's raising Blackners. I understand that Pam Hofeldt is a psychologist and majors in her own problems. There goes Linda Hermes in her Chevy probably still running on her Dad's gas (swiped that is) and plugging back and forth between Havre and Harlem. Another southern girl is Kathy Overcast, now Mrs. Max Hofeldt. Carol King is still in college trying to decide on a major but Marilyn Munson has graduated with a degree in Microbiology. Oh great! There goes Joan Brainard in her own Toronado, now I bet she goes to Havre every night of the week. Changes have also occurred in the country. Duane Dorcheus has his own farm. John Brekke is caretaker of the Sugarbeet Factor . Shirli Abel is the proud owner of a guinea pig farm. George Chilton and Wanda Couch are still living in Zurich trying to raise new members for the Wild Angels. Greg Heilman now has his own parking lot with a no-trespassing sign. And there goes Mary Jane Higgins in her red pick-up. I wonder where. I guess nobody knows what happened to Anna Benner. Olivia Roemmich is farming with Duke McKinsey. Browsing through the Chinook Opinion, I see that Bill Bahr is now the editor of the Chicago Daily and was awarded the Best Journalist award. Front page news is about a plane wreck in Bangkof and Betty Matulka a Pan American Airline Stewardess was the only survivor. Also I see where Blaine Warburton has been named Farmer of the Year for the third time. The war in Vietnam seems to be progressing since Bob Johnson is driving tanks over there. While I was in Harry's I heard the waitress Suzie Phipps laughing about a joke that Sandi Michel just told her. What a laugh! In Havre, I found Marilyn Sather with her own apartment, Linda Brady still running around and at the hospital Debby Doney is creating her own disease since she has had everything else. And that about sums up the activities of my class for the year of 1978. 79 OUR PATRONS MILAM FLORAL BUTTREY FOODS MILLER STUDIO BUD’S IGA FARMERS UNIOR OIL CO.
