The Annual Staff and the Class of 1956 Present The CHINOOK BREEZE Chinook High School Chinook, Montana TABlJ Of CONTENTS Superi«endenr's Message Schofl Board-Faculty dedication lass of 1956 Juniors fophoniores Freshmen Activities Sports Snapshots fivertisements l.S. Graduates FOREWORD They will miss us at inorn and at evening. Our songs in the school and the street; They will miss the low hum of our voices, And the gamp of our cumbersome feet. When th tessons and tasks are all ended. And the bell says, That schooTis now o'er! May ou )arting be not one of sadness, But an awakening of new realms to explore. SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE You are completing your high school education during a stream-lined and critical era when greater demands will be made upon your generation than any preceding one. Use the basic tools of learning acquired in high school for the good of society in solving the complex problems. This will require your active participation, your wisdom and your rational thinking. Remain constantly alert and strive to always learn new things throughout life rather than to have your education become a case of a little learning that is a dangerous thing . The first Student Council meeting was called to order by President Bill Leonard on September 12, 1955, under the Council sponsorship of Mr. Prestbo. Homecoming celebration was the most outstanding achievement this year, containing the Parade, King and Queen crowning, and ending with a Semi-formal Dance. October 23 was the first movie date set. At the Carnival the Council had the make-up booth and a cane throwing booth. The birthday calendar was also a big project in which the Band and Council worked together. There was a plan for a Safety Patrol by the P. T. A., Lions, and Student Council. A pencil vending machine has been set up in the office for student use. Help was extended in the Junior Red Cross Drive held in November. This year more Christmas spirit was promoted by the Council in decorations and a student body assembly. A new constitution was made and the C.H.S handbook was brought up to date. A new birthday calendar campaign for the Chinook Area was undertaken and netted $100.00. The formation marches added greatly to the football games at Hoon Field. The members attended the game in Havre. The crow's nest saw many sittings with the Pep Band during basketball season. The band's high light was attending the tournament which was held in Malta. Concerts for Thanksgiving, Canadian Day, and the Annual Spring Musicale were given. The band played at pep assemblies and also for the Christmas program. The Chinook Sugarbeeters finished their 1955 grid-iron season in fine style. Under the direction of Karl Fiske and assistant coaches, Chester Blaylock and Bob Teddy, the team finished second in the conference standing, losing only to the mighty Fort Benton Longhorns by a score of 6 to 12. Playing their second season under the lights they opened their conference by beating Fairfield by a good margin. They played only one non-conference game--with the Class A Havre Blue Ponies, there. Using an effective split-T formation, they fooled many an opponent, and scored numerous touchdowns. All in all the team had a very successful season. Basketball Under the supreme coaching of Karl Fiske, the Chinook Sugarbeeters finished the 1955-56 season with an impressive win-loss record. The Beeters played ten conference games; winning eight and loosing the remainder to the rough tough Fort Benton Longhorns. The players gained experience by playing eleven non-conferences tilts. Out of these eleven, Chinook won three and lost eight, with many of the losses going to Class A ball teams. Because of their brilliant record in conference play, the Sugarbeeters placed second in the conference, with the Fort Benton Longhorns first. At the North Central Class B Divisional Tournament held at Malta, in which six teams participated, the Sugarbeeters ran into some tough luck. On Friday night they lost a hard fought game to the Havre Central 49'ers by a score of 53 to 47. The Beeters showed good floor play and ball control, but just couldn't seem to hit the basket. On Saturday morning the Sugarbeeters lost another heart-breaker to the Fairfield Eagles. The score when the final buzzer rang was 50 to 37. Although the fellows were eliminated from the tournament, great sportsmanship was displayed at all times, making them a team to be proud of. His height works in with the Beeters very well on rebounding and hook shooting. He has a fighting disposition and is a strong competitor in all games. Big Man Dale Hanson Junior Forward, 6'1 Dale, who has the spirit that it takes, is a top notch floor man and has scoring ability in a tight clutch. He has the height needed for getting rebounds and is very good at feeding. In many cases his ability at the free throw line has put the Sug-arbeeters on top. He is a reliable team man and can always be depended on to do his best. Dale will be back next year to give the team another lift. ”Leechee” Lee Howe Senior Guard, 5'8 This speedy, good natured ball player has proved to be a big asset to the Sugar-beeters. A fast thinker and feeder whom you can al-ways bet on to come through the rough spots in the game. He can handle the ball very well and has the competitive spirit that it takes to make a ball player. Big Dave David Lamey Junior Guard, 5’9 Dave, who is a very slippery guard, has shown plenty of fitness in all games. He is a top scorer and packs plenty of wallop for his size. He can handle the ball nicely and is a cool thinker in all games. Being deadly on long shots, Dave has given the Beeters a great lift during the season. Smoke y Gary Morris Senior Forward, 6'1 Mick, being fast, good on rebounding, an exceptional long shot, and an all around ball player has made his weight felt during the basketball season. He has a keen shooting eye, and is almost impossible to stop when he drives in for a basket. He has been one of the top scoring men on the Sugarbeeter team. Nurnie Neil Neibauer Senior Forward, 6'2 From the free throw line Neil has racked up many valuable points for the Beeters. He can clear the boards and shoot with great skill. This fine team man is a tough competitor and has come through some rough games showing his spirit that just can't stand to lose. 56 J.R. John Norberg Junior Guard, 5'7 It’s not so much the quantity that counts but the quality that best describes this speedy ball player. He has the opposition fooled no matter which way you look at it. It really takes a ball player to keep up with Johnny. Even though he is short he can get the ball around the tall men and put it through the hoop. Co-ordination” Arthur Tilleman Junior Center, 6'2 During the season Artie has proven to be a high scorer on the team. He has the needed height for getting rebounds and has the ability to reach up and drop them in. He is a competent pivot man and is terrific on hook shots. Art will be back next year to spark the Sugarbeeters. Digger Francis Schend Senior Guard, 5'8 Here is a ball player who is a top notch floor man and scorer. The seemingly impossible shots that he makes are terrific. In any game you can bet on Francis to come through and give the opposing team a run for their money. He is a heavy scorer in tough games. Lover Boy Paul Wallner Junior Forward. 5'11 Paul is a capable man to have on a basketball team. He is fast with his hands and is a dependable rebounder. He is good at feeding, a good floor man, and can drop the ball in on a fast break. Paul will be back next year to assist the Sugarbeeters. Custodians Three rahs for three fine men who keep our schools clean, warm, and in good repair. Thanks so much, fellows, we really appreciate it. KNEELING: Herb Kimball, Fred Uhlich, Phillip Perry, Jim Jacobsen. Frankie DePriest, Walt Humble, Vick Palm. 'Baby Beeters” The 1955-56 Chinook B Squad, under the fine coaching of Chester Blaylock, enjoyed a very satisfying basketball season. The team was composed mainly of freshmen whose determination resulted in a very good record of wins and losses. Because of the great promise shown by the fellows, many of them will be advanced to the A Squad next year. The boys played good ball, and showed a lot of spunk right up to the final buzzer. In October a party for the new members was given. Relay races and games were played and lunch was served afterward. The girls had a booth at the Carnival and also a decorated auto in the parade at Homecoming. As in the preceding years, the G.A.A. planned a party for the boys who participated in our high school athletics. It was held in the spring shortly after basketball season was completed.
